Actually, we didn't get into WW1 until 1917. We wanted to stay neutral in that war. But we didn't b/c the Germans kept sinking our ships and killing innocent civilians. And then the breaking point was when Arthur Zimmermann sent a telegram to the Mexicans saying he'd be able to give them back some of their land that was taken from them if they fought against the U.S. But that didn't happen b/c the British intercepted it and then showed it to us, and that REALLY pissed us off..

They were presidents of the Continental Congress, not the United States. Because the Constitution marks the beginning of the United States government, Washington is considered the first president. Those other guys were presidents under the Articles of Confederation. The Articles were scrapped and so were the men who were president.
