I bend my knees and outstretch my arms, and when the dog is within range I quickly grab it by the neck with both arms, slide my hands over to the mouth, pick up the dog from its closed mouth, flip it and look for a collar. First time there was one, so I hauled it to it's house. Second time there was none, so I pulled out my pocket knife and slit it's throat - prevent it from attacking somebody else, but felt I still guilty.

I wish they would stop using dobermans as an example of a dangerous dog as me and my family and friends have had dobermans for years and we know that dobes dont go in for the kill unless they have been trained to do so. They do not automatically attack, they just do a lot of barking to warn you off. They prefer not to fight. I have seen akitas attack for no reason but not a dobe.
I once heard from dog trainer that you can rip his jaw apart, but don't know if thats true. I would try to hit the nose and poke his eyes out as stated bedore.

if the dog has an owner and the dog attacks someone the owner should be put down. that would stop people buying powerful animals with sharp teeth and killer instincts.

If you see someone else being attacked, grab a large stick or some sort of prying device to pry the dogs jaws open while yelling in a dominant voice the various commands to stop. Beating the dog could turn him/her on you.
Duh. You kick the dog like hell, punch it in the nose, and yell in a dominant voice commands such as, "NO! OFF! RELEASE! HEEL! LET GO!" If it's owned by somebody chances are they use one of these commands. Choking the dog will do nothing. Also don't try to pull because some dogs, such as pitbulls, will whip their head around and try to tear your muscle and it will only make the damage worse.

If you can keep your footing and keep on standing ( the dog wants to bring you to the ground), go for it's neck, be willing to sacrifice your weaker arm to it's jaw as it will leave it's neck open. A good swift punch into the neck could probably kill a dog much like it would a human.
