@JaySmith91 A CME reaches I think beyond the orbit of Mercury when it's a very powerful one. It's caused by magnetic rearragnement, which occurs when you get two magnetic field lines of opposite polarity, and bring them together. Eventually it will "snap", releasing the stored energy, and matter.

Some of the slower burning stars have an estimated burn time of many times that of our Sun. You are however right about one thing. It will eventually expand, engulfing all of the inner rocky planets before finally exploding. Something to look forward to!!!

Depending on the size of the flare it can take anywhere from a few hours to days to develop and break the magnetic field line which results in the flare. Searching youtube for something like "NASA SOHO solar flare" will yield videos which are from NASA and therefore still have the date and time stamped on them. There you can see yourself of how long this takes.

The energy released by these bombs serves to heat the gas around the core; this heat eventually works its way to the surface of the sun, where it is radiated away into space. In the process a tiny portion of the nuclei's masses are converted to pure energy and released, which results in the radiation we see and detect from the sun.
