  • Hello Ed,

Since I have seen that video for the first time, I have learned how to read THEN I ordered a subscription to Bass Player magazine. Thank you for the tip. ;-)

I really enjoy these Bass Whisperer videos and I am happily surprised that, even after moving on from Guitar World magazine, you are still uploading a video once in a while.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

  • How did I miss this video?

I guess that's a reason to keep re-subbing to the magazine cuz you freaking RULE!

  • thank you ed,for the freat reviews and for responding to the questions we have,i wish you good health and i hope you will continue helping musicians, what else can i say?i believe from what i ve seen so far that you nust be a great teacher, take care ed,i wish you can make more reviews someday.GREETINGS FROM GREECE

  • We're going to miss you Ed!!! All the best from SPAIN!!!

  • Ed will Miss you doing your reviews .. Maybe BP will have ya pick up on youtube where you left off. I really liked your reviews I even bough a Bass off of your recommendation.

Look forward reading your articles in BP Magazine. Cheers.

  • Hey Ed, I know you probably get 2,000 of these per day but in your opinion which is the way to go (it's a 2007 Fender P with a rosewood board, by the way): DiMarzio Model P or Seymour Duncan SBP2? I thought about the quarter pound, but I'm not crazy about the magnet pull. Thanks a ton!

  • LOL@ "learn how to read"...I always enjoy Ed's dry humor. I used to love BP mag back when Ed was the editor (the 90's). I'm glad to see he's back. I'll have to take another look at BP again.

  • Hey I Watched! Really Great You Are Looking Things Here And Open Your Possibilities For Available And I Hope You The Best! I'm Just Only A Guitarist Who Chooses Rounding Around Here By After Few Ties On Local "Bad" Feeling Areas So I Play And Sing Feelings From My Soul And At The Moment I Also Looking For Real Friends No Just Only A Silent Icons On My Page To Make Great Touring Show Band Especially A Bassist And Drummer But All Other People Too! I Give Thumbs Up! Thank You! Feels By Assa!

  • I want gifts and giveaways .....

  • Boo! Loved Ed's video reviews: hearing the gear is useful information. Print is next to useless except for the price and who stocks it. Without sound, you may as well do your mag in smell-o-vision.

  • Is Bass Player Magazine available in the United Kingdom?

  • Nice ... I use to love that magazine back in the day.

  • Awesome! Welcome back to BP!

  • Hope you're enjoying the new job! Best wishes from the the UK :)

  • Mr. Ed Friedland, i invite you to listen and try the MOZINA bass Guitars and Electric guitars.... This intruments are made in Ecuador under FODERA Luthier Licensed. As well as i know about it, this intruments are hand made with exotics ecuadorians woods. and I'd like to know what do you think about this new brand and obviously the quality sound of them. Thank you.

  • Hey Ed, I noticed that you've played a bunch of different basses and I love your videos but I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen a video of you reviewing a Spector bass.

  • Howdy Ed, I loved your video clips and am sad to see it ending. Your reviews and playing really inspired me in more ways than one. I thought your Bass Whisperer TV was so cool in fact after watching it I decided to do a local public access TV show about music lessons, guitar building, and live performances. Check it out if you get a chance, we have a you tube channel Acoustic Corner Show. Again thank you so much Ed I truly enjoyed what you did.

    Mark, Producer Acoustic Corner Show

  • Thanks Ed, my bank account will be a lot healthier without you selling me on new gear I "need" hahahah

Bongo bass review was the best thing that happened to my playing :)

  • Good stuff Ed. Glad to hear you will be back at Bass Player. Bass Player mag has been of little use to me for a long time. I've been buying the UK - Bass Guitar Magazine instead. I will be checking out Bass Player mag again though now that your back. Let's hope they turn the entire magazine around with your return and get back to the original style from the 90s as it was a great resource once. Thanks again for always being a fountain of wisdom for the bass community.

  • has anyone ever told you, you look like rob halford?

  • Thanks for every thing Ed! Glad to see you back at Bass Player, I recently gave it another chance, I'm even more excited now that you're back on board. Hopefully you can answer one last question for me. Lets say a guy had a jazz bass and he wanted to drop his crappy pickups for new ones and this guy wanted a jazz bass pickup that would get that P bass sound. What would you tell this guy to get?

  • @macflapalicious - I don't know if such a thing exists. J pickups that sound like a P? Nah. Try using just the front pickup, that gets close... if you want to use that without hum, get some split coil Js like Nordys, or Dimarzio DP149.

  • @macflapalicious I'd tell you to buy a P-Bass.

  • @macflapalicious I have a 70s reissue jack bass, I added a badass bridge, stacked knobs, and changed out the neck pickup for a '62 reissue precision pickup. Best idea ever. I find myself using the precision pickup alot more..i add a little bridge pickup for the jazz tone and the seperate tone control gives me many choices for tone. Its a super fender. I suggest you route the body a bit, get a custom pickguard and slap a real precision pickup in there. Nothing beats the real thing.

  • I was bass player magazine fan 10 years ago. But stopped subscribe. The gear review (my favorite section) kinda before more like an advertisement. No scores, only good words..... I miss the old days that BP says the pros and cons and give scores... And... NOOOO I DON'T WANT TO READ.... MORE VIDEO PLEASE :D

  • Learn to read?? NNNNOOOOO!!!!!!

  • Bummer

  • @cherdrol I couldn't have said it better!

  • I was totally disillusioned with Bass Player Magazine at one point... in my opinion if you weren't a 55 year old TalkBass subscriber who's a sideman in several jazz bands, this magazine wasn't for you. I recently re-subscribed and am very glad you're back on board.

If you're looking for suggestions for quick and dirty bass videos, why not show off your personal collection of instruments?

  • @lummond - Well, I'm a 52 year old TB subscriber that is a sideman for several jazz bands, so I have the youth market covered.... ;)

  • Hi Ed, i always amazed about the way you do your passion in bass and music.. what i want to tell you is, no problem about not-so-often bass review video on youtube.. when there is one, it always getting me excited... keep it up Ed, quality is better than quantity...

  • AAAAAAARRRGH i cant read.. this is bad!

  • i am actually one of those people who wrote off the mag. Ill give it another shot Ed, just because of the fact that are such a "stand up" no pun intended guy. =P

  • We´ll miss you Ed! thank you for your time and dedication to answer our inquiries. Best wishes!

  • Right on......

  • Glad you're back with BP, Ed. Enjoy the writing! I'm glad there's a new wind blowing through the mag; it was getting a bit narrow. I'd love to hear more about other superb bass players, outside the USA mainstream. Thinking of people like Marcelo Maia or Daniel Maza. Gustavo dal Farra, Grzegorz Kosinski. There are so many superb musicians out there playing their socks off, that it seems strange to circle round and round the same US superstar players all the time. End grumble :-)

    Best,

    Dom

  • @wujastyk - Dom, I hear you, but I have little or no input regarding the personality end of the coverage. I pretty much stick to education and gear related topics. There are a lot of players in the US that I'd love to see get covered, but probably won't because they are not on major recordings, or are out of the mainstream somehow.

  • Yeah! I have a subscription to Bass Player. Can't wait to read your stuff soon!

  • congrats Ed and sad to see no more videos, I was a loyal subscriber to BP regardless of their content issues until i had an unpleasant experience with their CS dept. i took an oath not to read it again, now i'm reconsidering!!!

  • @refbassist - I didn't say there would be no more videos, just not that often.

  • Comment removed

  • que triste, en Venezuela me ha costado mas de tres años conseguir esa revista, simplemente ya no viene para este país

  • Congrats Ed! Sucky for us, because your video reviews were without equal, as I'm sure your written reviews will be. I'll really miss being able to hear the basses and amps, but maybe I'll get BP again anyway.

  • I'm glad you are excited about writing for Bass Player and increasing your text reviewing. However, I think the service you provided on this page was unique: there are very few decent video reviews of bass gear, and none to your standards of quality and consistency. While an article can provide a larger breadth of detail on a subject than a ten minute video, there is something to be gained from this medium that cannot be achieved in text.

  • @thelaughingman16 - I agree, and whenever I can get paid properly to do this, I will continue.

  • I enjoyed your videos so much, I think I will send you one my basses along with a check and ask you to review it.

  • Ed - firstly, as a longtime subscriber (got it with my 1st Bass in '91) welcome back to BP! It's been great to see your writing "back home" and also great to see BP recover from how the economic issues hit them and forced them to pare back for a bit. My opinion about videos? It'd be great if someone stepped up & paid you and "quickies" would be nice if possible, but *NOT* at the expensive of the A/V quality you always has. If it's a chance to do a short but with an omni mic... take a pass.

  • awwww im happy for you but sad for the rest of us

  • I'm really sad to hear you wont be doing many video reviews anymore, Ed. You're my favorite youtube reviewer and the info I've gotten from these videos have always been on the money. I'll be keeping my eye out for any more that you find time to do!

  • Just subscribed to bass player mag again!

  • shame, good luck dude, i'll stay subscribed

  • Learn how to read?! I'm a bassist, not a drummer!

  • Ed, all your work is super, and I've totally and especially enjoyed the regular gear reviews on this channel. Sorry to hear the change, but I totally understand it. Here's a guy that really appreciates these videos and refers back to them regulary. Well done and congrats. I'll miss these for sure.

  • Oh well. I guess irregular bass reviews are better than none. At any rate, congrats on getting the job at the magazine!

  • what a coincidence, i just happened to read your magazine article on preamps yesterday at my local book store!

  • I might consider subscribing again. I dropped BP years ago once the reviews became nothing but cheer leading. Bring back the old days where they actually got out the feeler gauges and told you how tight the neck pocket is!

  • @thrashmasters - Well, I've never been a feeler gauge kind of guy. I think you can take pickiness too far, but I will say that BP affords a little more room for objectivity.

  • Learn how to read? But this is the internet! :D

I had been wondering where all the videos went. I hope this works out for ya Ed.

I may, if you don't mind, ask a couple of my contacts in the "industry" to get ahold of you. I've got an in with a cable company and a string vendor or two that I think may like you to see their stuff.

  • @jasonsgroovemachine - I'm completely open to private contracts, I've done several and everyone seems happy.

  • @BassGuitarMag I'll talk with em sometime this week and send em over to you.

  • Terrific news, Ed.

  • welcome back Ed!!!

  • Welp, there goes the only youtuber keeping me around. So long youtube. :(

  • That's good news Ed. I miss your bass guitars reviews. Will you keep on doin' them every now and then?

  • @anointed01 - I'll be doing a review every month in BP, with audio samples, so you can still hear the gear.

  • well, looks like I need to renew my subscription of Bass Player; Guitar World lost my respect so that will not be renewed. I really enjoy your reviews, Ed, glad you're still going to do them.

  • Well Ed you just saved BP a subscription, I was going to drop them this year however I will hang on a bit longer since BP's IQ has just been raised having you write for them. Looking forward to reading your articles.

  • @klingon1961 - Seriously, things are happening over there, keep reading.

  • @klingon1961 - What you said... I'm in the same boat, but now I'm going to re-up my subscription... :)

  • New editors?! HERE! TAKE MY MONEY!

  • Thank you for the update. Quality videos take time to record and even more to edit. Looking forward to reading or hearing your articles in the magazine. Cheers

  • Well, good news and bad I suppose, though I must admit, I've watched many more gear video reviews than I've ever read them. You are one of the best, hope you can put up some vids anyhow. Don't take this the wrong way, but I see most media moving to more video, it's so much more convenient to sit down at a PC and click through some subscriptions. Good Luck Ed.

  • I thought you were also writing for Bass Gear magazine...or is that "not on" anymore?

  • @gaoldias - No, once I went back to BP, it would have been too much to do BG too. I've got my plate full.

  • Ed, you should do an AMA on reddit.

  • @dobbs123456789 - Checked it out... Nah, I've got my hands full. Thanks.

  • some surprises? nice tease.

  • @BobaFretbuzz - Let's just say the next item coming in is a bit out of character for me.

  • I'm really surprised that continuing to do video reviews isn't part of the new gig. These reviews are fantastic and set a new standard for bass gear reviews on the internet. I cannot say enough good things about them.

I hope manufacturers take note, though, as well. I've spent some serious money partly as a result of reviews/demos that I've seen here. Genz Benz and Ernie Ball both have you to thank for a least a small portion of their recent profits :-)

  • "Lowdown"... Pun very intended.

  • i still get bass player magazine... i never thought it sucked...

  • HI Ed,

I'm a big fan and I want to stay in tune with you, so I have to ask you one thing:

Is there a way I can subscribe for Bass Player Magazine? Cause I live in Eastern Europe and the Transatlantic subscription policy of American newspaper industries is pretty much a black spot of my knowledge.

Thank you for all your great work!

    I really mean it.

    Chris.

  • @al3k0 - I have no idea, that would be a good question to ask on the Bass Player Magazine Facebook page.

  • Comment removed

  • @al3k0 Easy, just go to the bassplayer com website, slash Subscribe. Look for "Subscribe outside the US". You'll need a credit card. It's $40 postage on top of the subscription, which hurts, but it works. I live in Vienna, and BP drops into my mailbox regularly. It's nice. I just got Ed's article on preamps.

    All the best,

    Dom

  • Thanks for the update.

  • He's back!

  • Bummer, I really enjoyed watching your vids! Hope they come back sooner than later!

  • OK Ed! You had me at Hi!
