Saw Albert Lee with Hogan's Heroes last week. Still brilliant guitarist but no place for this number in his act now, regrettably. Like others here, it has been my all-time favourite guitar solo for decades. Spell-binding. The bass line through the track is great, too.
Albert Lee's guitar solo on this contains the most original sequence of notes, the most emotionally charged tone, in short the most brilliant piece of lead guitar playing I have ever heard.
It moves me as much now as it moved me back in 1971.
People who think he's all about country and speed should listen to the song and then give their opinions.
Geez, its good to know other people in the world were listening and enjoying HH& F. and this track in particular!I used to short-cut the song by jumping onto 2:48 and going through the Albert Lee break, with the joint in hand. I guess I was just a bit of an impatient bastard. it was Tony on vocals and Albert on guitar, right.Early 70s saw some absolutely great guitar players as well as Albert, I loved listening to Jorma Kaukonen from tha Airplane & John Cippolina from Quicksilver.
First heard this in 1974 on WOWI in Norfolk, VA. I had recorded it and for years after I marveled at what a great song it was without knowing the name of the band. WOWI was a progressive rock station that always played amazing stuff from the most obscure places, then one day, without warning they went corporate and changed their format. Crushing! It wasn't until about 10 years ago and the advent of the internet that I was able to track down the band and get the full download on all the players.
this is the absolute best , the El Pea island version which is wonderful, Rick the support guitarist agreed with me, I had a response from a member of heads hands and feet a couple of years ago , wicked. He swears he never knew Nick Drake but he was on the album
That guitar solo at 3:19 is just peerless. Not even Clapton, Beck, Page or Hendrix could coax such total sensitivity from a guitar. I've loved it ever since I first heard on Bumpers. Thanks SO much Albert.
What a re-introduction. We need to remember music when it was great
