I look at it this way, Human's some how dreamt up the creature called the "devil" and drew it looking like this skull with horns... so I would say that somewhere through earths history Man has encountered a being that probably looks like this and called it the Devil and feared it, and still fears it. You either get people who believe it and others who would rather lie to themselves that such things can't exist and stay safe in a mind that is closed with denial.
