I remember at age 6 my parents brought me a similar battery kit but with ammonium chloride (I think) as the electrolyte and a compass wrapped with a dozen turns of wire for indicating the presence of current. There may have been a bulb, don't remember as it has been nearly 40 years. More kits followed, breadboard sets, electric motors, crystal radios etc.

salt is used as the conducting medium.

@davidthatis You could try, but the current is probably too low.
By making the copper and zinc electrodes as flat strips a larger surface area will assist in more current available.
