Verdine is definitely the entertainer of entertainers but his bass solos are questionable. It's all show, no technique. you warely if ever see him sit down in a groove and show solo chops. Now that's not a bad thing because everyone is not a soloist. Terry Lewis of the Time is one of the funkiest bass players on the scene and you don't see him soloing. I just think verdines solo ability is hype.
Verdine didn't play behind EWF, someone else did. Maybe it was Nathan East. Need proof? Watch the live performances and his finger positions. BUT, but, but he was a bloody good entertainer and sometimes that's just good enough! Thinking it was Verdine is like thinking it was Jermaine playing James Jamerson's lines...not impossible BUT it just didn't happen that way!
@r2dege I've always felt that Rick James,Jermaine Jackson & El DeBarge were 3 of the most underrated musicians, producers & singers in music. Jermaine is not James Jamerson(NOBODY IS),but Jermaine is a helluva bassist! El DeBarge is a multi-instrumentalist who play drums, bass, organ, synths, piano, clavinet,El is better than Prince on keys, which is saying a lot. Verdine did play behind EWF,hell Louis Satterfield taught him bass technique.
@r2dege You are SO wrong, (and by the way folks, this NUT BRAIN @r2dege said the following: "Verdine didn't play behind EWF, someone else did". Maybe it was Nathan East.
Mr r2dege, I can't even began to tell you how delusional you are. 1st of all and trust me when i say this, I had a FRONT row seat, 2nd YOU have never been in rehearsal OR the studio to SEE the band, I HAVE. 3rd, you are obviously DEAF & finally, V.W., plays 5 down on the neck. That means he plays the ADGC 5th fret down. IDIOT!
I would love to copy this concert, but due to a 'strange' format I can not manage it (yet). Sorry to you all, because I think this music is for everyone!!
Verdine is truly awesome, where does all that energy come from? Al is killing it in the back round on rhythm like a freight train, those two together along with Freddie White was the nucleus of the group. Amazing shit!
Where did you get this. This is great. My 5 yr old loves EWF and met them after they saw her on youtube. Put cgoldsmith in the youtube search engine to see. Thanks for sharing. Please post more. Verdine is the greatest.
This is from the Brasil concert in 1980 (or 1981). Earth, Wind and Fire was the first (North American) band that had concerts there without "supporting acts" from Brasil. One of the concerts there was in front of 100,000 audiance..also a record for that time.
Unless he (Verdine) is "spraying" around the neck with stingers, octaves or harmonics, he plays 5 down on the neck.

A lot of people slept on Jermaine Jackson but he is very good. Funny to hear Jermaine playing good when he was a kid too.
