No one danced or dances this like Misha!! Such a turning point in dance. He has lead so many people to know and strive and understand what levels of elegance , and power, and grace can be acheived ( by few mind you..). What a wonderful bar he set. I was at my first class 3 days after seeing him perform so very long ago. I spent 13 years in on a dedicated quest crawling one sweat drop and sore muscle at a time gleefully towards what I knew was possible. Thank you Misha!! What great time I had!!
@pediatrapaola You hit the nail upon the head. The only other dancer that I have ever seen who can be mentioned along with Misha is Vasiliev...OOH the jumps...aaaah the power!! I agree!
Barry was the only reason I watched PBS back in the day! LOL! I was switching channels and saw him do this unbelievable series of moves and said, WHOA! who is THAT guy!!! I never watched any other male Ballet Dancer Since. Barry wuz my BOYE! LOL!
I am dancing ballet, I will train the hardsest I can, Enjoy the feelung of dancing every time I am training ballet, and I wanna be the danish Barishnikov! He is one of my biggest ballet idols. ps I am: not gay,
Back in my training days, I used to take a class every week with guys who are now principals withe the Birmingham Royal Ballet,. Tell you what- these guys were just as into girls as any other guy. Didn't look gay or sound. They sounded just like any other 19 year old English male teenager. The only difference was, they could soar into the air at a moment's notice and had leg extensions around their ears.
It's a what for Gay blokes? ericbwinter you're very wrong there . That's the great cultural myth surrounding ballet,is that's it's a gay vocation. Baryshnikov has well earned rep as a womanizer par excellence. In Soviet Russia being gay was seen as a bourgeois vice therefore if you were a gay ballet dancer you were seen as a subversive and most likely taken away in the middle of the night for political re education. Remember the soviets used ballet as political propaganda.
More to the point, male ballet dancers should play some football and hit the weight room. Misha being an exception, most of them look and dance like girls.
male football players should hit the dance bar so they can learn what it means to be a real athlete like a ballet dancers. ballet dancers are the best athletes you'll ever meet - way more athletic than football players. the level of training involved is more intense than most football players could probably handle - plus, they're stronger, too. our macho culture just doesn't want to admit this - heaven forbid men figure out that ballet dancers are more hardcore than "athletes"
Ha. I have done both, and danced professionally. The problem is that ballet dancers want to consider themselves "artists" and not athletes.
I have been through many 12 hour days of ballet classes and rehearsals, and it was a walk in the park compared to a few hours of football practice, let alone wrestling.
And of course there was a time when coaches had football players taking ballet to help their agility. Of course it was laughable. But not many ballet dancers could last 15 minutes of a football practice either. That would be a good reality show.
@ericbwinter no that ballet dancers couldn't take football practice... ik that it is still using different muscles but ballet dancers do have incredible strength and stamina.
I would not still be watching Misha if I did not admire his incredible skills. I think ballet would gain wider appeal if the men would strive for such athleticism. I played football in high school and wrestled. I was a national Junior Olympic weightlifting champion. After all of that (inspired by Misha) I managed to earn a living for a few years as a ballet dancer. Regular guys do not want to watch androgynous men dance like girls.
@ericbwinter that's very true. And that helps to show how much athletic ability you need to be a ballet dancer. Yet there are many incredible male dancers today such as Angel Corella, Carlos Acosta, Vladimir Malakhov, Herman Cornejo.. many male dancers that display this necessary talent and vigor. I don't really think that a lot of pro males dance like girls.
@ericbwinter Misha is still Misha, no doubt, but if you want a list of recent excellent male dancers, how about this list: Tetsuya Kumakawa Carlos Acosta Jose Manuel Carreno Daniil Simkin Leonid Sarafanov Ivan Vasiliev Angel Corella Ethan Steifel Each dancer is of course different in style, technique, power, and temperment, but all have alot to reccomend them. And this is by no means a complete list! (Joachim de Luz, Manuel Legris, Joan Boada, Roland Sarabia, etc. etc.)
I lived in London from 2005-08 and saw Acosta many times I became a big fan. Also see my comments on Kumakawa's top video.YouTube lests me see all of these great dancers,in their glory.I am in awe of them..My point is that the art drives men to an androgynous style. And let's face it, is is predominantly a vocation for gay men.I have no problem with that, but my point is that a wider audience would be captured with men dancing outside of the Balanchine ideal. The exceptions are wonderful to behold.
@msumedanthro you bring up some good points.. male dancers weight train in way so that their muscles are ripped and bulging. You can definitely still see them however i mean they have to lift other people hahah but dance training is extremely demanding and veryyy difficult.
You know a lot of guys think that sports like ballet, yoga, or gymnastics are for girls. But those people are some of the best athletes you'll ever see. Any athlete (no matter what sport you play) could benefit from this kind of training. You may not reach Barishnikov's level (Ha!). But with regular practice results will come.
ballets not really a sport though it's got an artistic side to it, so in essence it takes the athleticism and artistry to be a dancer whereas the artistry isnt necessary if you're a football player perhaps
@Soielily I was lucky enough to see Baryshnikov perform on Christmas Day in DC as the Nutcracker (approx. 1980). I also saw him in 1999 in NYC at the New Victory Theatre with his White Oaks Dance Project. There is no orchestra pit so we were up front. I also walked in on him before the show as he was talking, stretching with the other dancers on stage. We also got to meet him after the performance outside.
that wasn't an assamble! it is called revoltade double, revoltade starts jumping on 4° croisè, forward leg never touches the ground, while the other bypasses it, ending in 1° arabesque, doing an horizontal tour en l'air. If the tour is double you say revoltade double.
@znarf541 It's a double revoltade. Well, at least we call it that. Since it lands on the opposite leg it takes off from, it's not technically a revoltade. If you want to to get really technical, I suppose it's a jeté entrelacé double. But no one will know what you're talking about if you say that, so double revoltade. A lot of guys do them now, thanks to being able to watch Misha. Ivan Vaseliev has an absolutely ridiculous double rev.
however, I love the more thinking artist he is now. As a dancer you are told what to do so much. He may be more grounded now, but it is strangely more beautiful.
Dang he is solid like a rock, no flaws in his dancing, smooth, he makes it look so easy.. I wish I could have seen him in a live ballet. :(
