    SSBN 657Gold - Sonar

  • @nerblebun Actually my boat was more like a compliment of 130.. We came back as not 65 couples rather a unit cohesive group of very close group. Thinking not much different then any of NASA who go away for long periods in such close and dangerous conditions. I am also cynical about "your friend" and 80 crew? I have not seen a crew that small in my career. Even the old scorpion had a crew of 100 back in 1968. Most newer boats post 1975 had a crew of 100 - 110 plus 16 officers-some larger.

  • 80 was an arbitrary number I picked.Couldn't exactly remember how many Bob said when he told me the joke and 80 was easy.I know for a fact he served on Subs. Many of the men at the power plant on Kwajalein served on Subs. Some on fast attacks and a few on Boomers.

  • @DOCCAREY I served on all 3 of the 580 class from 13Mar64 to 2Jun66, qualifying in submarines on the Blueback (SS581) and we only had 82 men including all of the officers as the typical crew; however while on the Bluegill (SS242) we did have 124 men just prior to going into the shipyard. Considering all the subs built, there simply were too many configurations to question how many crew members were on a sub if we were NOT familiar with it.

  • Thanks Pat... 41-4-Freedom

  • It was my buddy in the Submarine Service who told me that joke.I've never served on a sub but I did two tours in the Nam in 70&71. Don't lecture me about setting safely in my home.I'm thankful every day I'm able to do just that.

  • for me....I just couldn't stand the feeling of being surrounded by water.....

  • u-571..where have i heard that b4? isit the same number as the captured german -boat?

  • Ok I will go along with that 1, his name was daphnie.

  • Great video, Awesome museum to visit, been there many times as I live about 45 minutes away! My Father was a Submariner, made Master Chief, and rode the smoke boats. He was inducted into the Holland club in 06. God bless you guys, Iron men in Steel boats!

  • I am looking forward to visit the museum. I never been to a submarine museum before.

  • Regretfully, the USS Holland (SS-1) - U. S. Navy's first submarine was disrespectfully scrapped in 1930 and sold for a measley $100.00 dollars instead of being preserved at this museum or the Smithsonian. So American's have lost a part of who we really are - as we have lost a part of our American history. Company records have also been scrapped in disrespect to those who have made them the success that they were. The company (Electric Boat) has taken refuge in very poor memories along the way...

  • If this museum is "unbiased" as they claim, then they will reflect (on) the true story and events that took place while John Philip Holland's company was being overrun by lawyers and financiers who claim to have "founded" the Electric Boat Company on (07 Feb. 1899). Electric Boat Company records are distorted concerning their origins as others took credit for developing the first submarine USS Holland. It was Arthur L. Busch who built the company's first submarines for (JPH). Not Cable, Spear.

  • hmm Groton, Ct my least favorite place in the world, I'm glad i finally got transferred =). I have some good memories from that base at submarine school though

  • Wow!

What was that mini-sub at 0:49, the black and red one?

    Anyone know?

    I want to make one...

  • That was the USS X-1

  • could have picked a better song... but i do like that museum

  • Is this the museum in groton? I love that place, such beautiful subs on display. nice pics!
