How exactly do you determine who's their rival? I mean I only know that your rival is Jamie and that's it o.o

Oh - "rival," in terms of anyone but Jamie, means "your rival for that person's affection." Alex/Gina, Blue/Ann, Bob/Gwen, etc are the pre-set couples. If you befriend the member of any of those couples who is the SAME gender as you while leaving the love interest of the OPPOSITE gender low in hearts (for example, if you're a girl and have 4+ hearts with Gina and <4 hearts with Alex), you'll see a lovey-dovey cutscene between that couple that implies they're getting together. ...

...However, rivals aren't all that important in HM: Magical Melody. All you ever get to see is ONE scene between each couple, the relationship never develops further, and it never prevents you from marrying anyone. In other games, like HM: Tree of Tranquility / Animal Parade, rival couples actually get married and have children! So, it would be important to know who your "rival" is so that you don't get your potential future spouse stolen away from you. But, like I said, in MM, it's no big deal.

I'm playing the North American GameCube version of Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, which prompts you to choose your gender upon starting a new game. But the European / PAL region release of the game for Wii removed the option to play as a girl. Sorry. D=
