Di luna is only mean because he was pushed there I mean his rivalry with Manrico is understandable, I mean who wouldn't fight for the person they love. The burning of Azucena is understandable if she tryed to kill your brother...i'd say the real evil person in the opera would be azucena and her mother who wasnt in the opera but is mentioned
agree with you. This makes me wish that I can sing as good as he does and sing this beautiful aria. I especially like how he sings and acts at the end of it...the high note, and the last "la tempesta del.....mio cor....." that line is golden
@Sieglinde: *g* I agree! Or at least, if I was Leonora, I'd have a hard time choosing between those two! I've never before seen such a smashing count Luna, with such a great voice!
I always prefer the baritone over the tenor. Or even the bass. Elisabetta is the other hopeless case. She's married to a bass and lusts for a tenor... :D
(If I were in Don Carlo, I'd shag Posa first, though.)
Well, I have seen somebody who has much Verdian timbre than his, yet, without "barytone-noble" like quality in both singing and stage presense. To this day, Bastianini has no rival in this role in my opinion. But as he is now in heaven, so what can I do....Mr. Hovorostovsky has the stage presense fit for this role, he does sing the aria beautifully... although his voice may be a little lyrical side for this. But who cares? When he looks so dashingly good.....

I don't think you have to have a lyric voice to sing romantically. Also, the orchestration, as well as the composer, calls for a dramatic voice. Recordings or concert versions of the aria that are mic'd are one thing, but needing to sing over an orchestra throughout the opera is another. The aria is romantic, but Conte di Luna is a very serious and rough character.
hot, hot, hot man, his voice causes me to feel faint!

has anyone noticed that this aria ends EXACTLY like Quanto e bella, quanto e cara", from Donizetti's L'elisir d'Amore? I couldn't believe my ears...
otherwise, amazing voice! :)

Silver-haired angel... *melts*
Leonora is just blind. And deaf, too. What can the love in Manrico?
Luna is the MAN... hot... beautiful... sexy.
And you can melt from his voice.

I too agree! Nothing Manrico sings comes close to Il Balen. I've never seen a Luna I didn't prefer to Manrico! And Hovorstovsky is irresistable.

Ah... TAmbién me encanta como canta e interpreta...

Hvorostovsky is barely a lyric baritone so why is he singing this huge DRAMATIC baritone role? No squillo in his sound!
MrCafiero 4 years ago 4
because he has a voice that comes across well on recording, is good looking, has a huge personality and is a good actor.
This is the modern asthetic....

I like lyrical baritones for this role better...
Luna is not a Scarpia-type bad guy, he's a gentleman. Okay, he's a little evil, but I can understand him.
Just hear this aria. He's desperately in love.
And Leonora ignores him... such a man... she is deaf. :)
