Oh this brings back so much memories. I used to dance for this halau and with Kapalai back when I was like 12 (I'm 26 now). Started when I was about 8. I definitely miss it. My best memory is when we had to do a competition on the big island and I was singing one of our songs in the bathroom. As soon as I came out, everyone was clapping. Including Mapu. They heard me. I felt so embarrassed but it makes me laugh now.
This videos are so beautiful. The woman look so tender. Their bodies and faces expressions are very lovely. Although I do not about this culture, I will learn to understan better.
here is my little sista....nothing has change....your stil in .....so gracious, so beautiful. so generous.....me ke aloha Kapalai....miss you so much.....hope you come in New Caledonia this year...waiting for you guyz....bless you
Ancient Hawaiians had no written language. Instead, all communication beyond the spoken word took place in the form of chants and the dance called hula. That's extrange and kind of primitive, don't you think so?
Possibly primitive from a western standpoint, but try to imagine the depth of intuition, facility with symbolism, and strength of memory developed in the oral tradition. Hawaiians were such a quick-thinking race that, after the missionaries came and taught written language, Hawaii had the highest rate of literacy in the world: virtually 100%.
That's more like it lad. I'm sure of that.
The Merrie Monarch Festival was founded in 1964 by George Na'ope. The festival is dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, known as the Merrie Monarch. King Kalakaua, the second (and last) elected king of Hawai'i, came to the throne in 1874 and reigned until his death in 1891. He was a patron of the arts, especially music and dance.
The Merrie Monarch Festival is committed to: 1) Perpetuating the traditional culture of the Hawaiian people; 2) Developing and augmenting a living knowledge of Hawaiian arts and crafts through workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and performances of the highest quality and authenticity; 3) Reaching those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate; and, 4) Enriching the future lives of all of Hawaii's children.
