Sugar and candy, medical supplies and personal hygene items and possibly simple wood toys are what I was thinking of stocking up on for tradeables. People will want some comforts when things go wrong and will want to make their children as comfortable as possible as well. The smokes are a good idea, I actually just gave up smoking because I don't want to be in a predicament.
gotta have GOLD yes it's expensive but look for cheap 14/24K necklaces, or coins etc...whatever u can find it's the oldest and most sought after commodity in history and another must add is small packets of coffee(any caffeine product) and candy or gum ass well just a thought! great job thanks for the vids and keep it up..........Reaper
You should put a bottle of that whisky in your med area. It will help with headaches and such. It will also help calm yourself and your child. Yes your child when you need your baby quite in times that might mean your lives. You will do what you can. Also getting vodka a cap full can be used to kill and earache. It will numb the ear and it will kill the Bactria that is causing it.
Knives , Sardines , Tuna , Chile , Fishing equipment , the Silver is good , I don't think you should keep that much cash in your bug out bag , you need a few extra small guns and ammo , the smokes are a good choice , the scale is a good one , beef jerky , seeds - good luck :) QC
i suggest forget the 3 shots of makers. get 3,4,5 1/2 pints of cheap whisky and vodka. also- screw tailor made cigs. get a bag of tobacco and rolling papers. thats ALOT more cigs than 3 or 4 packs. im talking not a pocket pouch, but like a tin of top tobacco or some similiar size. but just seal it in a bag if you need it. silver is good. those hundreds are so light, why not. but most likely its gonna be the silver, booze, and tobacco that will help you through. best wishes!
Ditch the quarters if you're concerned with weight though, the silver is worth nearly $40 now and potentially hundreds "then" and there probably won't be a payphone anywhere that works.
Capitalize on peoples addictions, I'm completely with you on that philosophy! 1 lb is a nice round number too. Not that you want to be a dealer, but Vicodine or any strong painkiller could be worth it's weight in gold too. Otherwise this is pretty much what I'm carrying. With the mini whiskey bottles, glass keeps much better though if you can find them.
youve got to be a black man......cigarettes and booze and you think youve got it all figured out. hahah your goin to die starving while smoking your cigarettes and drinking your whiskey cause no one is goin to give a damn about marb reds and 3 shots of whiskey
@jeepinjake you must be a dumb man. the video is about bartering. look the word up in a book called "dictionary". hes not trying to survive armegedon on 3 fl oz of whisky and 2 packs of cigs.
One of those small whiskey bottles filled with perfume extract would be worth well over all you have there. Learning how to make thermite would also work wonders on your urban survival skills, it's quite easy to obtain.
@2012icon Depends what you are prepping for. Is it going to be worthless if there is an earthquake, or your house catches on fire and you need a hotel for a few days? What about if there is a blizzard and city power is out for a week. You might need to purchase supplies, so cash would be needed (no ATM's). If you're talking TEOTWAWKI, then you're right. But for most emergencies, cash will be king.
i suggest you get some more of the ciggarettes and ditch one of the whisky bottles... in terms of value/weight you get more per oz with the ciggarettes
Good informative video. One barter item that is very useful in a bugout/shtf that you might want to consider is firearms or ammunition. An extra pocket pistol or especially extra ammo can go quite a long way. I know it would be a little heavy but they will go along way when it comes time to barter. If you don't want to carry an extra firearm, at least carry some extra ammo for trading. My recommendation is .22lr, or 9mm. A box of each would go a long way. Just my two cents.
i did not look through every comment but i cant believe nobody said COCAINE & MARIJUANA WILL OBVIOUSLY BE VERY VALUABLE u may have to set aside your old fashioned way of thinking if you are against drugs and whatnot
Now you've done it, you broke into your money stash! We do the same, but we also keep cash in different areas, like at home and with us since we are truck drivers. I want to get some pre-1965 coins cause that is easier to use than the silver 1 oz coins. Not only is cigerettes good, but so is having seed for tobacco. Also having a variety would be good, like menthol cigs, etc. Good stuff keep it up.
Drop the booze.....waste of weight & space. I could see stocking booze at a location, but not carrying it in a B.O.B. Much more useful items could be carried, such as food, ammo, medicine, etc........Besides, that's not enough booze to do much for an alcoholic.
@hopeechangee I wouldn't drop the booze, it's something that can be used for first aid and to calm the nerves a bit. The booze in little bottles is something that is and would be very valuable. I would diversify it a bit, but I would still keep it in my BOB.
I like how you organize the items in your bug out bag. I was thinking of including some medications some people can't live without maybe insulin or heart medication.
@ZazCat89 Additionally, it is fairly easy to make alcoholic beverages yourself in a SHTF, post-apocalyptic situation, but growing a crop of tobacco and getting the same effect from it as a commercial cigarette would require a much greater investment of time and energy than brewing a batch of moonshine. If you have alcohol, you just have alcohol, but if you have commercially produced cigarettes you have gold. I would include a carton or two if I have room.
@ZazCat89 Thanks for trying to present a well-reasoned argument, but I still disagree. The alcohol is heavy and is not useful for anything else. Cigarettes are much lighter and can be used as tinder, antiseptic, or as a water filter in a pinch. Additionally, most drinkers will also be smokers, and while they may want a drink they are much more likely to be addicted to cigarettes than alcohol. I can accept that you disagree, but just calling someone an idiot is completely unproductive.
As far as the alcohol to be used as barter possibly go with a slightly larger volume. It may be a little more in weight but more weildy in one container and yeilds a greater effect to the purchaser making it more desirable. You can get a pint of vodka for under $10 and one has to wonder the pickiness in such a situation if that were a desirable item. Just a thought
ok were trade ok by that's barter that's means a bag of beens trades for a bag of rice your money may only get you mugged in the right group food knifes fire starters survival goods water battles cooking and fishing gear hiking gear low temp sleeping bags foods being the mane trade in bad times
The cigarettes are a great idea, but I would leave off the alcohol. I figure anyone who is addicted enough to alcohol to want it that much is not going to have anything you really need.
great video...i keep all these things hidden in several differant locations throughout the area that i will be living in....that way i will never get robbed
I agree with possibly using ammo. Not sure I would go .22 as not only does everyone have them, but everyone has them...won't be much to barter with!! Maybe go with 5-10 rounds of .45acp, a lot of people went out and got them, without looking at how available the ammo is, or how much it is. may be worth more. Great Vid!
I love your prep videos. I've watched three now. You're awesome and I love that you are prepared and organize. You've got me interested in putting together different kits! Thanks for the ideas and time you took to upload. I'm subbing!
@TheCaptain008 Thank you so much for the kind comment. I'm glad to hear that it has made you interested in putting together different kits. Warning, it becomes addicting! :)
dude no one will want money when all there focusing on is survival especially in volcanic eruptions and other natural disasters, man made disasters etc..
bottom line is you have a better bet with whiskey other alcohol and medicines
@slither169 Thanks for the comment. What about after an earthquake, fire, blizzard, hurricane, flood, tsunami, volcanic eruption? I'm trying to diversify my Bug Out Bag Portfolio. :)
DUDE... Silver, Gold, Some Food is all you'll need to survive the coming collapse. BELIEVE ME. You make me sad at how scared people are getting. Please watch some old "Y2K's COMING" videos & see how people were just like this. I know economic collapse is coming, but there's 100 other countries to move to. Worst comes to worst have Silver, Gold, Cash & some food. Use the Cash for plane tickets. And head on out... Research, other countries are minting Silver Dirhams & Gold Dinars as legal tender.
@donovan93123 BREAKING NEWS: 31 year old male, code name "TheUrbanPrepper", married father of 19 month old son, arrested for growing marijuana for "Bug Out Bug". News at 11... :)
I don't think I'd invest in something that I couldn't use myself, so buying cigarettes for barter later is not for me. The $2-3 in quarters for the BoB is a nice addition, and not one that many people would think of.
Loose tobacco and papers as opposed to the cigarettes. That way you measure out amounts as opposed to "ready-mades." The amount of liquor necessary for barter would just be too great to carry. Perhaps a "bota"/wineskin full of grain alcohol; also useful as a fuel. The cash appears to be about right, that is if cash is still a viable alternative. If it is, the tobacco and alcohol is superfluous. After all, we're talking a B.O.B; not total collapse. Luxury goods maybe, but good choices.
I disagree; I've volunteered in major disaster areas a couple times and even though money was still the primary unit of tender/exchange, tobacco and alcohol (among lots of other things) still have powerful trade value. I don't smoke cigarettes, but I generally carry a couple Bic-type lighters and matchbooks in my backpack, and I could have made a killing off smokers who didn't have either of them, let alone cig's. Booze/tobacco/etc. ALWAYS have value, even in a "normal" economy.
For liquor, transfer glass bottle liquors to a food-grade measuring & dispensing bottle, such as Brasslite dottybop com sells. Then you’ve got high quality liquor, safe/easy storage/measuring/dispensing for barter purposes, and it can be opened/closed repeatedly as needed (which single serve barter bottles can't be).
Just a few comments - my first week here on YouTube so forgive any social faux pas my inexperience may result in. Regarding the cash, as many others have mentioned, go with small bills. After a disaster (even before!) lack of available change may make that $100 bill a casualty of necessity. There's also price gouging to consider... if a seller see's you have a larger bill, the price could very well suddenly reflect that information.
Quarters are necessary for coin-op laundry machines (apartment buildings have them too). A roll of coins can be used as a field expedient force enhancer (knuckle backer when punching, in a sock as a sap, etc.).
You can also put a roll of quarters in a bag tied to a rope for throwing over a tree limb if you need to raise food out of critter's way. In an urban environment it would work for hiding certain goods at times too.
You could also go the "junk silver" route and get silver quarters/dimes, easily recognizable and still spendable at face value (though you take a loss from their purchase value in a vending machine or similar sale).
What's to keep me or someone else from shooting your ass, taking your loot, booze, and smoke? I wouldn't waste my time with money. It'll only get you killed, if money is even worth a damn in a situation such as this.
@FaceGrinder12 The same could be said for any of the pieces of gear I will be bringing, not just cash (with regard to getting shot). If the wrong person knew you had it, there is always that risk. I'm not preparing for zombies or Mad Max though. For fire, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, blizzards, tsunami, etc I believe that cash will still have value and I don't think that my next door neighbor would shoot me. Under very extreme circumstances (Ex: Economic), maybe. Thanks for the comment!
@FaceGrinder12 repeat trade is what stops you from doing it, if he has this much, what else does he have you dont know about? altho those large bottles are near empty, how many unopened ones does he have at home? if he has two packs of cigarettes to trade, how much is he keeping for himself? is that all he is willing to or has trade or is he a smoker himself and stock piled it somewhere you dont know about?
here's an idea: matches. like the ones that you get from a cigerette store for free. get a stash of them and store them in a ziploc. i think there will be some people who didn't think of fire who will be desperate for something to start a fire with. also you gotta remember the red phosphorus in the strikers.
@healerdan I like it. Actually, I have been working on a revision to this compartment and would like to add some extremely small barter items, stored in plastic bags. Matches is one item that would be a great add. Hopefully I'll make that video shortly...
@TheUrbanPrepper if your a member of Costco, I picked up a pack of 50 lighters for under $6!!! its great to have alot around the house, and would be a great trade item!
I have always considered alcohol/cigs as vital to a BOB for bartering. And as a recovering smoker (almost 2 years now)...I have to admit...if things went crazy...I may want a pack of smokes w/me. Don't forget...you don't hv to barter the entire box. You would b amazed at what people will do for just 1 or 2. Also Reds (cigs in vid) are a bit harsh for some. Try mid range Lights (not ultra lights) and get 100s...mentally it feels like more cig even if it is not.
I would not have big bills like 100, 50 or 20 $ bills because if you run out of the small bills you might end up having to pay 20dollars for a can of food that the seller only would take a dollar or two for, if he cant give you any change back..and when your 20 $ are gone you might have to pay 50 $ for a can, or for anything else you might need to buy. So the more small bills the better, it wont take up that much more space either, a houndred 5$ bills wont take more space than 2 cigarette packs.
when you said addictions I thought you were going to whip out some heroin or crack lol (not really, but that would be funny)
tools and survival necessities (other than your own) can be good trade/barter because things that might save peoples lives for some are important therefore you might get something really good back
@GamerSwag LMAO!! That is hilarious! Good suggestions on the tools/survival necessities. I think I may need to do a revision on this compartment to carry some more lightweight barter items.
One thing that is small that u might want to have is gas and some copper instead of silver copper is at the moment cheaper and is more useful like to make bullets and pipes and tools so I would think it would be better to barter with
booze and cigs are exactly what I would think of. get cheep rot gut strong booze. its less expensive and can be used for first aid, treating abscess tooth, teething, fire starting, cooking. loose the coins they have no value in a bug out. no one will trade in coins till after things settle down from the disaster. otc drugs can be of great bargaining use too. lopermide to some fat white guy (me) that drank the wrong water pain relievers, allergy meds to a worried parent of a panicking kid.
great videos. I have thought along the lines you have wrt buying vice items for barter, but not necessarily as bug out items. I'll have to consider this. one thing you might consider is using fractional gold coins instead of silver coinage. one 1/10th ounce gold coin weighs 1/30th that of 3 one ounce silver coins but has similar value
Again, very good points you mention. I too have been buying those small little plastic booze bottles that have the plastic caps which seal better. I fill them with lamp oil and tape electrical tape around them each, about 2 or 3 feet, but I should caution people who would also like to do that. Fill the bottles first, seal them tight, then put the tape around. I would dampen my cotton balls with the lamp oil a little for better fire starting. Bic lighters will also be very valuable.... Cheers.
The best bartering items are those which weigh nothing, don't cost you even when you use them, and can't be stolen. I am speaking of KNOWLEDGE. Skills like knife sharpening, rope making, shoe repair, etc. will become invaluable in the worse situations. Everyone will need these skills but few are preparing their MINDS right now. Everyone is working on their bags. :o) So... learn a VALUABLE TRADE that will be useful. Best barter system of all.
I haven't seen the cigs and alcohol idea yet, that's a good one. There's lots of stuff I could stash that I don't use that could be traded for things I might run out of.
Metal coins not a great idea. You will need to carry your own set of weights to ensure you aren't being cheated - so that's more weight in the BOB. Also, silver is not as good as gold since gold is more valuable per ounce... so you have to carry more silver weight than gold weight for a given amount of money.
Items in your bartering bag must be dual use (at least) as with the rest of the BOB. If the bartering items are of no use to you, then they don't belong in the BOB. Stick to first principles!
Paper money: No bills over $20. Helps to disperse the money among party, helps to hide the money (a $100 bill means you have at least $100!), helps to make change). 5 $20 = $100 but a $100 cut into 5 pieces is worthless.
Great idea for having the silver. I would also include one or two cans of smokeless tabaco (snuff, dip). Many people I know do that and I think would be just as willing to trade as those who smoke. Great videos through the whole series. I would also love to see a PDF of all the contents.
@jackclark1981 Ouch! I would suggest reading Dave Ramsey's book. It is really inspirational. It took us a little bit to save the $1000 cash. We sold several items and I took on some extra side project jobs to help raise the money. It's a good feeling security blanket to know that we have it on hand (and not stuck in the bank), just in case an unexpected emergency happens (Ex: clutch goes out in the car, the dog breaks a leg, etc). The book has several good recommendations for saving up the cash.
Good idea for the bartering stuff, a couple of things to remember: the smokes have a shelf life of about 1 year, and the people willing to trade vital suplys for booze are the types of people you want to avoid. the smokes are a good idea though. Another thing to think about is know what you have more than one of as far as supplys to trade like knifes for instance.
siver, gold ...even the smokes are ok...100 bucks worth of 1 doller bills is what you need...youll end up giving 100 dollers for a pound of suger...thats my take on it...you deff got it going on..not putting your system down by no means...just think about it for me a little bit...no big bills man...love your stuff..
KEEP THE QUARTERS (or add a few more), vending machines now charge $1.25+ on some items and pay phones DO exist, but you should look for them along possible paths you may take. There was one in front of Lowe's here, they are at random places. Like the makers mark, keep a lighter handy with those smokes, and I would add lollypops, TP, bandanas, and extra first aid equipment.
i know i'm in the minority here, but i just don't see precious metals meaning anything in a catastrophic event. if cash loses it's meaning then i feel the metals will do the same. maybe rich people would want it. but i think you are a wise grasshopper for including the alcohol & cigarettes. those & medical supplies & batteries & food/water these are the things people will want most & first. if you're hungry you can't eat silver & gold. maybe i'm out of touch, but i doubt it. Dave is the man!!!!!
@INFIDELxSTRONG Water filters allow you to filter someone's water and only put some mild wear and tear on your filter. Batteries (like ammo) are too heavy and precious to barter with. You want light things: strike anywhere matches, gauze/tape and/or bandaids, pain relievers, pen refills, etc.
I really like your channel it's teaching me alot about being prepared :) one recommendation is to try and hide the 1000$ and silver as best you can in your bob bag :) thx for the vid!
@wafflecraker I'm glad you enjoy the channel. Everyone here has really taught me a lot too, so the knowledge is going full circle through all of us that are interested. Yes, I am definitely going to find a very clever hiding spot for those valuables. Not sure I will make a video on its exact location, just in case one of you runs into me when SHTF. :)
@TheUrbanPrepper lol :P I've been researching for my own BOB bag and I'm just wondering where you get all your maxpedition bags because I checked out their website and their prices are outrageous :P
Thanks! Thad be awesome. Oh! and as an EDC recommendation, check out the SOG Aegis (I got me one and I love it) Nutnfancy also has a review on it. I currently don't have my camera with me so I cant make a video response, but just thought I'd let you know since the SOG Aegis has been nothing but a pleasure to use. =) anyways good luck & have fun!
@heynewgirl Yes, I know that I run the risk of someone wanting to hurt me for the money, although they may want to hurt me for my bug out bag in general if they knew of all of the life saving gear that is included in it. I plan on having the cash hidden in one of the many pockets in my Rush 72 backpack. I may end up splitting up the cash into multiple compartments (with some on me), so if I were to not have my backpack, I would still have some left. Great comment and topic of discussion!
Sugar and candy, medical supplies and personal hygene items and possibly simple wood toys are what I was thinking of stocking up on for tradeables. Great Vid!
TodaysBushcraft 3 months ago
.22lr shells... light weight, cheap, you can carry a pile and everyone has one. I never thought of smokes, good idea.

I don't think I'd invest in something that I couldn't use myself, so buying cigarettes for barter later is not for me. The $2-3 in quarters for the BoB is a nice addition, and not one that many people would think of.
DavidFourteen 4 months ago
IMHO, I would keep these items in a fire proof safe. It would be a shame if all that was lost in a fire, you can keep the key in the bag though.
AllAboutSurvival1 4 months ago
Good vid. Shrink wrap them smokes for freshness.
turbodog411 4 months ago
Loose tobacco and papers as opposed to the cigarettes. That way you measure out amounts as opposed to "ready-mades." The amount of liquor necessary for barter would just be too great to carry. Perhaps a "bota"/wineskin full of grain alcohol; also useful as a fuel. The cash appears to be about right, that is if cash is still a viable alternative. If it is, the tobacco and alcohol is superfluous. After all, we're talking a B.O.B; not total collapse. Luxury goods maybe, but good choices.
TheCarablanco 4 months ago
@TheCarablanco
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
For liquor, transfer glass bottle liquors to a food-grade measuring & dispensing bottle, such as Brasslite dottybop com sells. Then you’ve got high quality liquor, safe/easy storage/measuring/dispensing for barter purposes, and it can be opened/closed repeatedly as needed (which single serve barter bottles can't be).
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
Just a few comments - my first week here on YouTube so forgive any social faux pas my inexperience may result in. Regarding the cash, as many others have mentioned, go with small bills. After a disaster (even before!) lack of available change may make that $100 bill a casualty of necessity. There's also price gouging to consider... if a seller see's you have a larger bill, the price could very well suddenly reflect that information.
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
Quarters are necessary for coin-op laundry machines (apartment buildings have them too). A roll of coins can be used as a field expedient force enhancer (knuckle backer when punching, in a sock as a sap, etc.).
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
You can also put a roll of quarters in a bag tied to a rope for throwing over a tree limb if you need to raise food out of critter's way. In an urban environment it would work for hiding certain goods at times too.
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
You could also go the "junk silver" route and get silver quarters/dimes, easily recognizable and still spendable at face value (though you take a loss from their purchase value in a vending machine or similar sale).
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
Ok, just realized I'm doing this wrong as all my posts are going in reverse order to my writing them... hmmm....... sorry, almost done.
WannaBeReady 4 months ago
What's to keep me or someone else from shooting your ass, taking your loot, booze, and smoke? I wouldn't waste my time with money. It'll only get you killed, if money is even worth a damn in a situation such as this.
FaceGrinder12 4 months ago
@FaceGrinder12 The same could be said for any of the pieces of gear I will be bringing, not just cash (with regard to getting shot). If the wrong person knew you had it, there is always that risk. I'm not preparing for zombies or Mad Max though. For fire, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, blizzards, tsunami, etc I believe that cash will still have value and I don't think that my next door neighbor would shoot me. Under very extreme circumstances (Ex: Economic), maybe. Thanks for the comment!
TheUrbanPrepper 4 months ago
@FaceGrinder12 repeat trade is what stops you from doing it, if he has this much, what else does he have you dont know about? altho those large bottles are near empty, how many unopened ones does he have at home? if he has two packs of cigarettes to trade, how much is he keeping for himself? is that all he is willing to or has trade or is he a smoker himself and stock piled it somewhere you dont know about?
ShadowLawliet 4 months ago
here's an idea: matches. like the ones that you get from a cigerette store for free. get a stash of them and store them in a ziploc. i think there will be some people who didn't think of fire who will be desperate for something to start a fire with. also you gotta remember the red phosphorus in the strikers.
healerdan 5 months ago
@healerdan I like it. Actually, I have been working on a revision to this compartment and would like to add some extremely small barter items, stored in plastic bags. Matches is one item that would be a great add. Hopefully I'll make that video shortly...

@TheUrbanPrepper if your a member of Costco, I picked up a pack of 50 lighters for under $6!!! its great to have alot around the house, and would be a great trade item!
jacobwyn 4 months ago
I have always considered alcohol/cigs as vital to a BOB for bartering. And as a recovering smoker (almost 2 years now)...I have to admit...if things went crazy...I may want a pack of smokes w/me. Don't forget...you don't hv to barter the entire box. You would b amazed at what people will do for just 1 or 2. Also Reds (cigs in vid) are a bit harsh for some. Try mid range Lights (not ultra lights) and get 100s...mentally it feels like more cig even if it is not.
qtlesgrl 5 months ago
I'm currently reading the Total Money Makeover~never thought of putting our $1000 in the BOB! What a great idea! Great video :)

bmaximize 6 months ago
I would not have big bills like 100, 50 or 20 $ bills because if you run out of the small bills you might end up having to pay 20dollars for a can of food that the seller only would take a dollar or two for, if he cant give you any change back..and when your 20 $ are gone you might have to pay 50 $ for a can, or for anything else you might need to buy. So the more small bills the better, it wont take up that much more space either, a houndred 5$ bills wont take more space than 2 cigarette packs.
MIRCWOOD 7 months ago
when you said addictions I thought you were going to whip out some heroin or crack lol (not really, but that would be funny)
tools and survival necessities (other than your own) can be good trade/barter because things that might save peoples lives for some are important therefore you might get something really good back
GamerSwag 7 months ago
@GamerSwag LMAO!! That is hilarious! Good suggestions on the tools/survival necessities. I think I may need to do a revision on this compartment to carry some more lightweight barter items.

rmpkatz 8 months ago
One thing that is small that u might want to have is gas and some copper instead of silver copper is at the moment cheaper and is more useful like to make bullets and pipes and tools so I would think it would be better to barter with
rmpkatz 8 months ago
booze and cigs are exactly what I would think of. get cheep rot gut strong booze. its less expensive and can be used for first aid, treating abscess tooth, teething, fire starting, cooking. loose the coins they have no value in a bug out. no one will trade in coins till after things settle down from the disaster. otc drugs can be of great bargaining use too. lopermide to some fat white guy (me) that drank the wrong water pain relievers, allergy meds to a worried parent of a panicking kid.
bxxj 8 months ago
good idea would be to sow secret pockets in your pants and hide bills all around, and keep petty bills on you. ( X
LosAngelesWeedSmoker 9 months ago
great videos. I have thought along the lines you have wrt buying vice items for barter, but not necessarily as bug out items. I'll have to consider this. one thing you might consider is using fractional gold coins instead of silver coinage. one 1/10th ounce gold coin weighs 1/30th that of 3 one ounce silver coins but has similar value
hot2warm 9 months ago
Again, very good points you mention. I too have been buying those small little plastic booze bottles that have the plastic caps which seal better. I fill them with lamp oil and tape electrical tape around them each, about 2 or 3 feet, but I should caution people who would also like to do that. Fill the bottles first, seal them tight, then put the tape around. I would dampen my cotton balls with the lamp oil a little for better fire starting. Bic lighters will also be very valuable.... Cheers.
ohoh00007 9 months ago
The best bartering items are those which weigh nothing, don't cost you even when you use them, and can't be stolen. I am speaking of KNOWLEDGE. Skills like knife sharpening, rope making, shoe repair, etc. will become invaluable in the worse situations. Everyone will need these skills but few are preparing their MINDS right now. Everyone is working on their bags. :o) So... learn a VALUABLE TRADE that will be useful. Best barter system of all.
mrmonkeyman50 9 months ago
I haven't seen the cigs and alcohol idea yet, that's a good one. There's lots of stuff I could stash that I don't use that could be traded for things I might run out of.

zippo1592647873 9 months ago
Metal coins not a great idea. You will need to carry your own set of weights to ensure you aren't being cheated - so that's more weight in the BOB. Also, silver is not as good as gold since gold is more valuable per ounce... so you have to carry more silver weight than gold weight for a given amount of money.
mrmonkeyman50 9 months ago
Items in your bartering bag must be dual use (at least) as with the rest of the BOB. If the bartering items are of no use to you, then they don't belong in the BOB. Stick to first principles!
mrmonkeyman50 9 months ago
Paper money: No bills over $20. Helps to disperse the money among party, helps to hide the money (a $100 bill means you have at least $100!), helps to make change). 5 $20 = $100 but a $100 cut into 5 pieces is worthless.
mrmonkeyman50 9 months ago
wow man, great ideas. I seriously would have never thought about cigs, or alcohol. Cheers friend.
TacticoolGUY 9 months ago
Great idea for having the silver. I would also include one or two cans of smokeless tabaco (snuff, dip). Many people I know do that and I think would be just as willing to trade as those who smoke. Great videos through the whole series. I would also love to see a PDF of all the contents.

jackclark1981 9 months ago
@jackclark1981 Ouch! I would suggest reading Dave Ramsey's book. It is really inspirational. It took us a little bit to save the $1000 cash. We sold several items and I took on some extra side project jobs to help raise the money. It's a good feeling security blanket to know that we have it on hand (and not stuck in the bank), just in case an unexpected emergency happens (Ex: clutch goes out in the car, the dog breaks a leg, etc). The book has several good recommendations for saving up the cash.
TheUrbanPrepper 9 months ago
Good idea for the bartering stuff, a couple of things to remember: the smokes have a shelf life of about 1 year, and the people willing to trade vital suplys for booze are the types of people you want to avoid. the smokes are a good idea though. Another thing to think about is know what you have more than one of as far as supplys to trade like knifes for instance.

Poppaswine33 9 months ago
KEEP THE QUARTERS (or add a few more), vending machines now charge $1.25+ on some items and pay phones DO exist, but you should look for them along possible paths you may take. There was one in front of Lowe's here, they are at random places. Like the makers mark, keep a lighter handy with those smokes, and I would add lollypops, TP, bandanas, and extra first aid equipment.
1IdeaAhead 9 months ago
i know i'm in the minority here, but i just don't see precious metals meaning anything in a catastrophic event. if cash loses it's meaning then i feel the metals will do the same. maybe rich people would want it. but i think you are a wise grasshopper for including the alcohol & cigarettes. those & medical supplies & batteries & food/water these are the things people will want most & first. if you're hungry you can't eat silver & gold. maybe i'm out of touch, but i doubt it. Dave is the man!!!!!
INFIDELxSTRONG 9 months ago
@INFIDELxSTRONG Water filters allow you to filter someone's water and only put some mild wear and tear on your filter. Batteries (like ammo) are too heavy and precious to barter with. You want light things: strike anywhere matches, gauze/tape and/or bandaids, pain relievers, pen refills, etc.
mrmonkeyman50 9 months ago
@mrmonkeyman50 you make a very good point. anything medical would be like gold in an end of civilization scenario.
