Bought one of these cards (generic, single slot but looks like the one he has) from Geeks.com for $40! A BIG improvement over my 7950GT. Personally I think the 7950GT might have had slightly better 2D (maybe just my imagingation) but the 4850 has far better 3d performance. Even with an old athlon 64 my framerates are much improved and I can run more AA (4x) and AF (4x) than I could before, plus adaptive AA. Image quality in 3d games is also much better.
The 4850 runs a bit faster than a 6770 and pretty close to a 6790, and at $50?? i'd buy a 4850 anyday over those others, the 4850 is 256 bit, unlike the 6770, though the 4850 is dx 10.1 i dont care, just as long as it runs my games good :D
This guy is a tool. I'm betting that the card can be downclocked for those who want it a bit cooler. Also, this card should be used with water cooling IMHO. This card doesn't impress me compared to my GTX 260
@RandomXUsr Water cooling? Lmao. The 4850 is cheaper than the GTX 260 and runs at about the same temp. It's also about the same speed. And Both are outdated.
cant beleive he said it runs really cool lol my single slot HD4850 run really hot and when i had not cleaned all the dust out of it in game it used to go over 100oC
GOD I love this card. Even by late 2011 standards it still beats almost everything I throw at it. I've maxed out Deus Ex HR without any slowdown on 1680x1050 and I'm waiting for arkham city and skyrim to see just how far it can go.
When I say it is in your head, I mean if your eyes are the same as every other human being. Who knows, you may have super human eyes that can read 50 frames in a single second!!!
If you would humble yourself and listen to someone who knows the industry instead of being a know it all smart ass, you would not get taken for a sucker by hardware manufacturers.
I am telling you, the difference in quality between high and very high is minimal. But it is optimized MUCH worse. Why? So that suckers like you will rush out to get what they don't really need. You can play with your 4870 on high settings (not very high, but big deal) on just about every game out there. And the difference is small. And the human eye cannot record 60 frames in a second, anyway. In a year it would be so much cheaper for the 6950. *cont*
I would still wait a year. IMHO the 6950 is overkill. PC developers are not taking advantage of the current technology at there now, let alone next gen tech. Even though the 4870 is notorious for heating up, I still think running two 4870s in crossfire would be the way to go, and wait a year or two on the 6850. With all of these cross-platform games out, one 4870 can just about run anything at high visual settings (assuming you got the cpu, ram, etc).
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx Awesome. Why not just crossfire 2 4870s (assuming you MB supports it)? I had rather run a 4870x2 than a 6950 - even though the 6950 and 4870x2 is considered even.
I really don't see why you need either at this stage - with all these cosole ports. I have an ATI mobility radeon HD5870 in my ASUS lappy - which is dead even with your 4870 performance wise, and I can just about max any game on the market.
A year from now, maybe... Plus in a year you can get it for 150$.
@samuelrosenbalm Lol. Doing crossfire with 4870s would be useless now. I would have to buy 2x waterblocks for the gpus. The 4870 CANNOT play all games at max and be smooth. Black Ops for example. I have a i7 920 @ 3.7ghz. I know its not the CPU thats not bottlenecking it. The 6950 2GB will blow it out of the way. Especially when I unlock it to a 6970.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx Well, my laptop specs are as follows... Intel Core i7 740QM @1.73GHz TB @ 2.93GHz
6GB DDR3 Memory
ATI Mobility Radeon HD5870
My lappy is more powerful than my desktop that has a 9800 GTX and Phenom II x2 and 4gb memory.
My lappy's ATI mobile 5870 is actually an underclocked 5770, which guess what? Makes it about the same as your 4870. And if you check my vids, I am just about maxing Metro 2033 with AA set on max with fraps and on an outside level.
@samuelrosenbalm Because your desktop is crap. Lol. How can you compare a high endish laptop to an old dual core processor? That makes no sense whatsoever.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx Good point. It really is no comparison. I hook my lappy up to my vizio via hdmi and play crysis and it is freaking amazing.
I think it is awesome that you are getting the 6950, actually. I hope you enjoy it. :)
I am just trying to point out that it will be a couple years before game developers tap it's true power due to all of these cross-platform games. The 6950 will be cheaper then, too.
Also, my lappys mobile 5870 is equal to your 4870, and it maxes crysis.
@samuelrosenbalm First, the 6950 can be maxed. Play Crysis on max and yes it will. The 4870 already lags in Black Ops max, so what makes you think it will do any better in a game that is even more demanding? It will probably max it, but will it be smooth? No. What is your FPS? You don't realize how outdated the 4870 is getting. It still is a good card, but not even close to what is out now.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx I max crysis with anti-aliasing set to x2 with 1600x900 resolution at about 20-25fps.
I play metro 2033 with aa set to minimum and DoF and tess turned off, and maxed out in DX11 (1600x900 resolution) I get about 35-40fps. Totally maxed out (aa max and DoF and tess on) I get about 20fps.
Modern warfare 2 I run at a smooth 45-60 maxed. Battlefield Bad Company 3 (from what I hear from the alpha testers) I will be able to run it a step down from max at about 30-40fps.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx I did not say it was smooth, dude. You asked what I was getting and I told you.
Crysis is optimized poorly. Even for today's computers. And anything over 20fps is considered playable. What you consider playable is a matter of opinion.
I don't have any trouble running any of the modern games at high graphical quality. I am not going to be a giant sucker and pay for what I do not yet need.
I have been nice to you, and you're being a shithead.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx Some people you just can't get through to. They know everything already - you cannot tell them anything - and they want to feel superior to others. Not to long ago the big thing was being able to say, "My rig can max Crysis at 60FPS!". People want to be better than others. Here you are with your new graphics card - and all of a sudden my performance was, "utter crap, haha". I have been trying to give you good advice, but you are too arrogant to listen to someone who knows. *cont
I am currently going to college as a software engineer. Does that make me an expert with hardware? Certainly not. But, I do know how the industry works. Suckers like you are a gold mine. People who are too proud, they want the best! And you can't tell them anything.
Even if you have to play on high settings to get a good frame rate, that is much more profitable than running out and buying the latest and greatest out of sheer arrogance. Who cares, anyway? *cont*
@samuelrosenbalm Yeah... people like me are a goldmine... The last time I bought this 4870 was when it first released. So I say that they don't make much money off of me at all. You are too blind to see that there is a worlds difference between the 6950 and the 4870. Especially since I'm getting a dual bios card that can unlock to a 6970. I'm not buying a GTX 580 or a 6990, so I am not buying the latest and greatest. Its a great mid range, going into high range card. /thread
I know how the 4870 performs. I am using an underclocked 5770. That is exactly what you have. There isn't a game on the market that I cannot "almost" max at a decent frame rate (by anyone's standards). Perhaps it is your cpu or ram that is bottlenecking. I don't know. But I do know that in a year, the 6950 will be 30-40% less what it is today. You don't have to take my advice, but I AM telling you the truth.
@samuelrosenbalm 20-25 are not decent frame rates. That would be extremely choppy. As I already told you, it is definitely not my CPU. i7 920 @ 3.7ghz with 8GB G. Skill Pi 1333. It doesn't matter that the price is going to drop. I'm going to be buying it anyway.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx They say that anything over 20fps is playable. I get 25fps in crysis, and It is smooth. The human eye is capable of reading exactly 24 frames in a second. Anything over that is...wait for it...IN YOUR HEAD. It is in your head. :P
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx Well, I hope you enjoy it. I will be enjoying my underclocked 5770 for another year. And I will probable pick up a 6970x2 for my desktop in about...3 years. And with it, I will be able to play the modern games (3 years from now) at max. Just wait and see.
@xtremegamerzz96 not on high resolutions because the gts 250 was made with a max of 512mb of ddr3 while multiple models of the 4850 were made with 1gb and i think i saw a crazy 1.5gb chinese made one.
Man these things run hot and will heat up a room. Ya they are designed to run hot but what about the rest of the stuff in your case. Get one with a real cooler or go for something better.
is my ATI Sapphire HD Radeon 4850 512mb still quality for games like WoW and Borderlands, or should I spend the money to upgrade to ATI Radeon 5970 Black Edition?
They were good at launch but man they ran hot and couldn't overclock for shit with those coolers. I sold mine and went with Nvidia after too many issues with ati drivers. Funny thing is theres one at my local computer store in the pulled hardware bin for 30 bucks, still looks brand new too lol. Maybe I should get it. But wtf is that bullshit about ati running physx, never happened. And even more bullshit about fps in crysis, trust me this card struggled with crysis, my 9600 gso was better.
the hd4850 is comparable to the nv9800gtx, performance wise. and it blows any nv9600 out of the water. although crysis is a TWIMTBP title, the hd4850 still delivers great performance for it's price.
@greyfoxzero I googled both "crysis 4850 stutter" and "crysis 9800gtx stutter" and the results do not indicate a common problem with the hd4850. many videocards have microstutter with many games, its not just 4850 that might have issues. for example, I remember having microstutter in farcry2 using a 9600gt. its usually a software problem.
infact, I currently own a hd4850 and it performs great in all the new and old titles, including crysis.

my 4650 was 60 bucks, and i run call of duty 4 at 1280x1024 with AAx2 and max anisotropic filtering at about 50-60 fps. 200 bucks for something that only ads 20 fps doesnt seem worth it :/
This HD4850 makes me remember back the time of the 8800GT G92 GPU
One-slot cooler, incredible performance, reasonably price-point. The cooler does not do its job well though, but this is an awesome card even at this time (for 2+ years)
@limpei1 Well, I can play Crysis in everything at High, with 1280 by 1024 resolution. So, I'm pretty sure the 5550 is probably better. But, I just found out that I could do that on Crysis today. I downloaded the demo, lol.
@JoDaddyy The RADEON HD 5550 is NOT faster than the RADEON HD 4850. Just because the RADEON HD 5550 is newer than the HD 4850, that doesn't mean that it's faster. The HD 4850 is one of the top of the line cards for the 4000 series, while the HD 5550 is only a mainstream card in the 5000 series. Your HD 5550 is closer to a RADEON HD 4650 and that card is over 3x's slower than the HD 4850. Higher numbers don't mean anything.
I gots me a radeon 4890! I love the card I feel no need to go to a 5 series card cause I can blow through any game at max no prob at all. it is more powerful than the 4850 with 1gb gddr5 and higher clock frequencies. For only $200 u can't beat it
@TheOriginalEAGLE I only say the truth. I only helped people to see the 5750 is better than 4850,GTS250 in performance, load/idle efficiency, features and not make a mistake when buying.
@Jefneurotoxin The only place where the 57xx series falls short of the 48xx series, is it can not do double precision math, where the 48xx can. This is only of concern if your running something like milkyway@home. BTW I have a 5770 and it's great!, cool, quiet and fast!
This was THE SHIT to own on a P45 board. *(as long as you appreciated the single slot design)
It was still disappointing in OpenGL games that didn't support CrossfireX (e.g. Nexuiz). Games still ran fast enough for lower resolutions but the 512MB memory held it back considerably when using AA/AF in higher resolutions.
@omgmyuserwasdisabled ehh, im sort of a nvidia fan, but my computer was built with an ATI. ATI is good, but it's ventillation is bad. every now and then i'd get the graphics card failure notice.
still, ATI is a decent company, and i think if both nvidia and ATI worked together, they'd make the most badass graphics card out there.
@FRURMELLL i HIGHLY disagree. mainly because when i had a radeon 4850 card, every now and then i'd get the overheating message from the ATI control panel.
of course, im sure nvidia has that with some of there designs, but not the GTX series on the least... maybe the GT series...
i cant wait to buy the 5850 but the price needs to come back to 250 because my 4850 was 250 at the time and the stock cooler on this card is sh** i reached 100 degrees celcius i replaced it with the twin turbo arctic cooling and it idles 35 degrees and load 49 degrees
who ever replied yes to this question doesnt know what hes talking about. The 4870 x2 kicks the 4850's ass. Seriously, theres no competition between the two cards.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For 249.99. You can buy an xbox 360 pro with 60gb hard drive. I got mine before the price drop. Why spend $400 on a graphics card when you already bought a computer, and if you're not careful, you might break the card or your computer.
@silenceyouidiot thank you for clearing that out. there are so many idiots out there thinking their crap ass console can do better than my radeon 5870. thank you once again!
no but the graphics on 360 are on dx9 which is rubbish bcz pc is upto dx11 which fucks the dx9 lol and i bought my pc for £404 when i couldve bought a ps3 for £250 but i hv a dx 11 setup which maxs any game so id rather have my pc and if you are carefull enough there is no chance of you breaking it
.. HD4850's cost about $100... not $400... and break your computer?!? How?!? I just bought one of these for my PC which I use as a 'tivo' and blu-ray player. Very nice, much better than my 9500gt was doing. With a 40" samsung B630 LCD.
2) PC gamers are actually saving money in the long run, as we do not need to upgrade every year like most computer illiterates say. More like every 2 or 3 years.
@tr1ckydr1v3r it plays the sims 3 full graphics no laggs world in conflict it does almoast full graphics with little laggs and ut3 they showed it.... and the l4d2 it does no laggs with high graphics (ive only played the demo for l4d2)
Excellent. I a going to buy a new computer is all (price range of around £800-£900) and i spotted a pretty good one with that card in it. Am i right in thinking (at least for now) that if the card can play Crysis at a high/very high setting that it is a good choice for any game out atm?
@tr1ckydr1v3r well i run crysis warhead at lowest graphics physics and medium textures and gamer details the rest with pretty smooth gameplay means i dont see that it laggs
Bought one of these cards (generic, single slot but looks like the one he has) from Geeks.com for $40! A BIG improvement over my 7950GT. is my ATI Sapphire HD Radeon 4850 512mb still quality for games like WoW and Borderlands, or should I spend the money to upgrade to ATI Radeon 5970 Black Edition?
SuperBossSauce 1 year ago
@SuperBossSauce hahaha your funny, 4850 will still play the newest games on medium or high

And even more bullshit about fps in crysis, trust me this card struggled with crysis, my 9600 gso was better.
greyfoxzero 1 year ago
@greyfoxzero
the hd4850 is comparable to the nv9800gtx, performance wise. and it blows any nv9600 out of the water. although crysis is a TWIMTBP title, the hd4850 still delivers great performance for it's price.
metsat8ll 1 year ago
@metsat8ll google crysis 4850 stutter, plenty of people out there having issues with framerate with 4850's.
greyfoxzero 1 year ago
@greyfoxzero I googled both "crysis 4850 stutter" and "crysis 9800gtx stutter" and the results do not indicate a common problem with the hd4850. many videocards have microstutter with many games, its not just 4850 that might have issues. for example, I remember having microstutter in farcry2 using a 9600gt. its usually a software problem.
infact, I currently own a hd4850 and it performs great in all the new and old titles, including crysis.

JoDaddyy 1 year ago
@JoDaddyy not really its about the same
limpei1 1 year ago
@limpei1 Well, I can play Crysis in everything at High, with 1280 by 1024 resolution. So, I'm pretty sure the 5550 is probably better. But, I just found out that I could do that on Crysis today. I downloaded the demo, lol.
JoDaddyy 1 year ago
@JoDaddyy well, it depends... might be the same might be better. just overclock it lol
limpei1 1 year ago
@JoDaddyy The RADEON HD 5550 is NOT faster than the RADEON HD 4850. Just because the RADEON HD 5550 is newer than the HD 4850, that doesn't mean that it's faster. The HD 4850 is one of the top of the line cards for the 4000 series, while the HD 5550 is only a mainstream card in the 5000 series. Your HD 5550 is closer to a RADEON HD 4650 and that card is over 3x's slower than the HD 4850. Higher numbers don't mean anything.

Jefneurotoxin 1 year ago

@ironmadion55 ATI are better than nVidia AMD + ATI owns INTEL + nVidia..
omgmyuserwasdisabled 1 year ago
@omgmyuserwasdisabled ehh, im sort of a nvidia fan, but my computer was built with an ATI. ATI is good, but it's ventillation is bad. every now and then i'd get the graphics card failure notice.
still, ATI is a decent company, and i think if both nvidia and ATI worked together, they'd make the most badass graphics card out there.
ironmadion55 1 year ago
@ironmadion55 Sorry but nVidia has massive problems with too much heat from the gtx 400 series, ati keeps it cool!
FRURMELLL 1 year ago
@FRURMELLL i HIGHLY disagree. mainly because when i had a radeon 4850 card, every now and then i'd get the overheating message from the ATI control panel.
of course, im sure nvidia has that with some of there designs, but not the GTX series on the least... maybe the GT series...

For 249.99. You can buy an xbox 360 pro with 60gb hard drive. I got mine before the price drop. Why spend $400 on a graphics card when you already bought a computer, and if you're not careful, you might break the card or your computer.
pikefan23 2 years ago
4850 is twice the power level of the xbox360's gpu so you can play games maxed out with over the normal standard 30fps that consoles give out.
silenceyouidiot 2 years ago 18
@silenceyouidiot thats ture, but 4850's are getting old now time too move on
with the 5870's
Ultravideoslave 1 year ago
@Ultravideoslave Or at least a 5850, the 4850 beats the 5750 in gaming performance so you would want a 5770 or greater for more experiance.
silenceyouidiot 1 year ago
@silenceyouidiot 5770's are not that much of a jump in proformace
Ultravideoslave 1 year ago
@Ultravideoslave 10fps gain in games, but about 15fps less compared to dx11-10.1
Meaing a Radeon 4850 beats a 5770 if the 4850 is in dx10.1 while the 5770 is playing games in dx11.
Really your getting a 4870 with dx11, and about 1-2fps less than what the 4870 gives...

@silenceyouidiot and a lot of people rather play on consoles, i just dont get that :/

@silenceyouidiot yeah, but think about all the others benefits of a pc, besides gaming of course.

.. HD4850's cost about $100... not $400... and break your computer?!? How?!? I just bought one of these for my PC which I use as a 'tivo' and blu-ray player. Very nice, much better than my 9500gt was doing. With a 40" samsung B630 LCD.
earthling1984 2 years ago
1) This is $100
2) PC gamers are actually saving money in the long run, as we do not need to upgrade every year like most computer illiterates say. More like every 2 or 3 years.
3) My PC = $600 (without screen)
Xbox = $250 (without TV)
4 Years Later
My PC = Spent $150 on upgrades
Xbox = Spent $500 on new system
4) Also, your console games are way overpriced.
