@nightofraven lol..... the first game of final and phantasy practically game out on the same day, in all honesty i dislike turn based games but phantasy star has more of a in battle free roam fill to it, which makes it more funy, plus you have a large multiplayer :3 Phantasy Star's first online game came out in 2000 on dreamcast while final fantasy xi came out in 2002 for ps2, Honestly Phantasy is a hardcore hack n slash while ffxi doesnt compare ;P <3

I love PSO but I think the days of instanced action RPG's are coming to an end when the technology is advanced enough to start putting it into a continuous world like Tera and GW2 are doing.

But nothing that would even resemble an action RPG with live combat, they were key bind based and all the ones that have come out of copying those MMO's have been as well. I'm talking about taking the combat style of PSO, Vindictus etc and putting it into a world like the ones you mentioned.

@bloodvor622 Normally I like open worlds but in Phantasy Star games they just seem to get it right...if it were open world the environments would just be big masses of grass/soil/rock and would be plain...almost sure of that lol. Almost all MMOs do this.

This way, the stages and instances have more personality and substance....and lastly...if it were open world, it would probably open up more boring gameplay...

GW and TERA look cool but PS just has more dynamic 'hands on' combat.

@L2Nuku Not to say American games aren't getting stale as well, but Japanese game making has taken a different direction. In Japan, it's not exactly a good thing to identify yourself as a gamer. Many people see it as taboo or childish. So games in Japan have largely changed focus to mobile or portable games that can be played on a commute. Hardcore gaming has also taken a large dip in Japan. The average Japanese gamer is more likely to have a 3DS than a PS3.

@L2Nuku Actually Japanese games are now becoming a niche market. They really don't gain big popularity anywhere else but Japan. I have a large library of hundreds of my favorite games. Many of them RPGs, RTSs, FPSs, Racing games etc, and most of them are made by Americans or Europeans. Very few of them even have Japanese influence. Japanese games once flooded the market, but their game making has gotten stale or gimmicky and has become slightly less popular with the hardcore crowd.
