  • I just find the whole thing creepy. I mean the stand-in is just so obvious.

  • They were going to re-shoot this movie with another actress, but her fans said, "NO!"

  • Mary Dess doubles JEAN in all these scenes!!!

  • Clark Gable was devastated by Jean Harlow's death. He adored her and referred to her as his "little sister". He served as pallbearer at her funeral and wept openly during the service. "She didn't want to be famous, she wanted to be loved."

  • jean so pretty yet naturally funny a very unique combination, very rare. her acting abilities were so natural.

  • That was Jean Harlow at the end because they filmed movies then and now out of sequence. Sometimes they do the final scenes first, middle scenes last, etc., and then the editor takes over.

  • They did what they could with the existing technology. I am sure today this would have been done a lot more convincingly with all the tricks they have now.

  • they should call this the "jean harlow effect" where an actor or actress dies before the release of their work and cause the movie to become very successful. other major examples would include spencer tracy and heath ledger.

  • Ironic that Clark Gable starred in both Jean Harlow's and Marilyn Monroe's last film. Amazing too that the Wizard of Oz himself (Frank Morgan) has a role here. Those were the days (and I wasn't even alive when this film was made)!

  • Maybe they should've just re-filmed with someone it doesn't look right not even seeing her face. R.I.P Jean :)

  • @dancersinger78 I'm not an expert, but I read somewhere like Wikipedia after looking up Harlow and the film that the studio originally did plan on reshooting the movie. But it was the fans who protested that plan, which is what prompted them to finish with the Harlow look a likes. In a way, I think that makes sense. I like to write, and if I died before I finished a story or a book, I'd rather have someone else build on what I did than redo it entirely. A lot of actresses probably feel the same.

  • @whigrose Good point :)

  • 1:02 A little OT I know, but this morning while watching the Royal Wedding, whenever a lady guest would arrive in a wide-brimmed floppy hat, I woul say in honor of Jean, "Throw those things in the ash can!"

  • It was actually well done, when you watch the whole movie.

  • Look at the way "Carol" turns her head ALL the way around at 0:36, to hide her face from the camera -- she doesn't even match Clark Gable's eyeline.

    That ain't Jean!

  • RIP Beautiful Angel...You only lived a few short years...but you still bring happiness today...!!

  • Actually it's not available on eBay, but you can obtain a copy at

    scootermoviesshop . com

  • A lot of films are scrapped when a star dies. I'm glad we got to see this final performance of Ms Harlow. It would have been a shame for this film to have been canned.

  • so sad..and there was nothing they could have done do save her back then even if they knew it was kidney failure. So sad...I was watching riffraff and suzy last night...she really could hold her own.

  • Sadly, the real Harlow's last lines in this picture were "Good-bye". Happy hundredth birthday Jean (3/3/2011)

  • Hey, that's the voice of Jiminy Cricket! I'd recognize it ANYWHERE!!! :-D

  • @blofeld39 Yes, that was Cliff Edwards, in the role of "Tip".

  • They did a reasonable job of covering the part with a double. Remember that this was 1937 and they didn't have the technical ability that they have now. When I first watched this film, I didn't pick up the binocular scene as being a double, but now I can see it was. Thanks for posting this.

  • man: "...im dying.." fake jean "how do you think i feel"

i bit ironic. you think they would have a better word choice.

  • @cuzblueyes Yeah that was terrible! It was delivered almost like it was a really, realllllly bad joke.

  • @cuzblueyes That wasn't the fake Jean. That was Mrs. Kiffmeyer (Una Merkel) talking to her husband (Frank Morgan). The fake Jean says "C'mon Dubinet!"

  • WhaT an interesting piece of footage.. What a shame that harlow was gone so young... she was so glamorous and sweet and beautiful... a joy to watch... RIP

  • is the servant the same actress from "gone with the wind"??is she mami?

    God I loooove her!

  • @lavale891989, yes, that's her. Hattie McDaniel.

  • I do a better impression of Harlow's voice than this woman does, but we should be grateful that they completed the movie with her. At first, when Jean died they were going to scrap it.

  • Gable is great of course..did any of you notice that the actors from the wizard of oz were also in this the witch and the wizard..Ms Hattie McDaniel was a great friend of Gable's he thought her not being invited later to GWTW premiere was unjust..Harlow would have made a great Belle Watling opposite Clark Gable..

  • Harlow's voice double is the woman who did Bambi's mother's voice in Bambi!

  • could you post the is whole movie i love the pairing of Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. Id love to see this movie. And if you have Wife vs Secretary, or Hold Your Man I would love to see those as well. THANKS!

  • Jean Harlow was so adorable! RIP Sweet Jean.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I have wanted to see this movie for ages due to it's Harlow's last. I've tried renting it for years without luck. I have always wanted to see what they did regarding the use of a double. Many thanks again!!!

  • Try Ebay they always have it for sale.Goodluck and enjoy

  • after reading all the books that go on about her hair , I try to decide the films after Reckless - that her natural beautiful hair was used, in China Seas where she is wet that is her hair and it was short..after that film , who knows, Riff Raff was a Wig..

  • You can tell it's not Jean's voice; it's a rather bad imitation.

  • when she in that hat.(her double i think)

and not looking .. at camera, its bit obvious its not her

  • I'd always found it sad that Jean died so young, but now that I've seen her in a lot of films, it's tragic and unbearably sad. It gets sadder once I begin watching movies made in 1935 and 1936 since she died quite soon afterward. Such a talent and so beautiful!

  • At 2:50 -2::59 that is Harlow,isn't it?

  • yea

  • so damn sad she died at 26 and at the height of her career

  • Gable always said that he felt like he was working "in the arms of a ghost" completing "Saratoga" (MGM, 1937). As you can see, the studio got a double to take over Jean's role but covered her face with large hats, sunglasses, and a back turn.

This film was the biggest money maker of Harlow's career. Upon her death, the studio wanted to trash it, but fan mail poured into MGM begging them not to do it and to keep the scenes with Jean in tact.
