Your right it will always be so. There are. 6.2 million folks that agree, across the south east and kentucky and ohio and New England. Even Buffett acknowledged it in his book "A Pirate looks at 40"
Personaly I Would not trade any dance or the music for it. Nothing beats it for me anyway.
Shag is a wonderful dance but differs from the West Coast Swing. The Shag showcases the man while WCS showcases the lady. I love the shag but it is a rooster dance.

White people dancing very stiffly to soul music is always fun! I am from Statesville, NC and if you do not thing this is a dying art form you are kidding yourselves. These kids need to stop going to square dance night with their their folks and smell the rotting corpeses. Shag is dead and is has been for years. Did you not see the movie????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
you're 30 years too late with the year 95. Notice how slim in the hip the guys are. you would go three weeks finding a group of people that slim today. First time at OD was 1957 when a sophomore in college. Great memories
Native Carolinian here, creeps me out now and always has. I guess shaggers keep the people who make pleated kahkis, loafers and dark leather belts in business.
You have to be a native of the Carolinas to understand shagging. There definitely is "beach music", yes many of the artists were black, and the best shagging was done at the beach.....Myrtle Beach...in the summertime. thanks for the memories
We will never figure out *carolina shag* dancing. It is music by mostly all Black Artist that only white people dance to but blacks don't then the white people don't call it Soul they call it *beach* music which you would think of Beach boys or Buffet but no they think soul black music. To top it off it goes back to when there was segregation in carolina schools. The whole thing is bizarre.
Well i personally am a shager but i dont call all music beach music. I consider much of what i dance to to be Jazz, blues, soult/r&b. I think the term beach music was coined mainly because south carolina beaches was about the only place that played the "black music" way back in the day. I could be wrong but..
Thanx for the info. I live in TN now but when I was in Carolina the clubs, radio stations and festivals with *shag dancing* was always black artist and white people dancing. I asked a black co-worker if black people shag danced and she laughed. I lived in CA so I could never figure it out. Thanx.
Don't forget Carolina Beach ... in good ole NC .. where the name of the dance was invented .. I find it so bizarre that the other poster finds it "bizarre" .. as in all dance, it is a form of expressionism .. and shaggers make it so much fun to watch. ;)
Wow, dating this one is interesting. Let's see... Has to be '95, most likely sometime during the summer. Amazing how everyone has changed since then. Great post.
I would call that the jitter bug ...

This is still good. Especially the guy doing a "Shorty George" in the second part. A shame no one in the Dallas area teaches this dance.

The Song is "Walkin' on my thin soul shoes" by Choker Campbell. I found it on a cd called Shagger's Delight, Vol 5.

The girl in all black is hall of famer Judy Duke. She teaches shag at Fat Harolds in OD.
