IBD only effects boids (pythons and boas). This was paramyxovirus which can effect all snakes. Crypto and staph can also effect all snakes and can easily be spread if precautions are not taken. I cannot stress enough the importance of quarantine. Enjoy your new per! :-)
@philli1100 .. hey..dick.. guess what!?! I AM A VET!
it takes over an a hour for the blood cells to crystallize and cell membranes to rupture.. the snake is LONG DEAD before that.. after about 5 min in the winter snow or 10 min in a freezer packed in ice, the snakes heart stops beating all together.. the animal will lye dormant and unconscious after about 2 min..
as sad as this reality is.. it is just that.. REALITY!
@philli1100 I learned a lot from that tragedy and now own 24 happy and healthy animals. It's sad you don't think people deserve a second chance. I love each and every one of my animals with all my heart. They are cared for every day and it shows in their temperament. You can be pissed off all you want. If my experience can stop just one person from making the same mistakes I did, then you're wrong; I did educate someone. At the very least, I educated myself. Being vulgar doesn't make you right.
@philli1100 To put your mind at ease, this snake was put to sleep the day after the video was made...2 years ago. I am well aware of how important quarantine is... now. It won't bring him back and neither will you posting rude stuff below the video I made hoping to educate others.

Thank you, Einstein for reminding me that my failure to properly quarantine this animal was not a good choice. Read everything about a post before commenting... you would have known then that he was already out of his misery. The only time I recommend putting an animal in the freezer is if it is already dead. There is no way to know what that animal is feeling, so why risk putting it through hell if you don't have to. Freezing can lessen the chances of them being able to do a necropsy.
Ok... so it';s time to respond to some of the questions. This snake has been dead for over 2 years. I had him put out of his misery and a necropsy done. There were lesions that are typical in IBD infection, but he had meningitis and paramyxovirus. NO, it was not fun playing with a sick snake stressing him out, but I felt it was necessary to demonstrate his complete lack of ability to control his head. He was F****** brain dead so he didn't know what was happening.
There are several viruses that can present these symptoms. Before getting too worked up, have your animal seen by a veterinarian that specializes in snakes. Unfortunately, most of the viruses that present neurological symptoms are eventually fatal. I am deeply sad that others will go through what I did. Let me know how your loved one is doing.
omfg, my ball python i've had for 11 years started doing this stuff, at first she was upside down in her tank, and i thought she was dead, so i picked her up and she was acting all weird... I thought she was just severly dehydrated and cold because she was cold to the touch and her eyes had sunken in, but after reading up on IBD and seeing these videos, I can't help but cry, i am going to try to take her to the vet in the A.M. if she survives the night, it's so sad!
Thank you, everyone for your kind words. The virus killed 6 of my beloved pets before finally being eliminated. Please... take good care of your animals!
nope.. if your snake has IBD (check with a vet to amke sure it DOES in fact HAVE ibd first obviously)
but if it does, the best think you can do is put it down... if you can't afford to take it to the vet to put it down, (as bad as this is going to sound) you can always put it in the freezer
its a QUICK death for snakes, and PAINLESS, as they simply drift to sleep and die...)
Very sorry for your little one. It's good of you to leave the footage up as it is vital for other boid keepers to familiarise themselves with IBD in my opinion.
I had him for 3 weeks and 2 days before symptoms showed. He was fine the evening before and about 12 hours later...bam! It hit him like a train wreck. He couldn't even drink...I had to hold his head in the water bowl to help him. I even had him tube fed to try and give him the strength to get better. No such luck.
The results were negative. He had a viral brain infection. There was a lot of brain damage and lesions. His kidneys were also shutting down despite the baytril shots. Because his symptoms were classic for IBD I am leaving this up.
On 08/22/08 Kaa was euthanized by my veterinarian after 9 days of antibiotics. I am still waiting for the necropsy results. i should receive them on 09/03/08.

This is so sad :( I'm so sorry. I just got a new snake and would hate to see her like this. Does this disease only effect boas and pythons?

Seriously, guys. This is not the place for your profanity and obscenity. PM each other or something... Don't take away the message here, please.

Is it fun to play with a sick snake? Stressing it out even more.

HEY, DON'T PUT YOUR SNAKE IN THE FREEZER!!!!
THATS THE SLOWEST WAY OF KILLING IT!!!
THAT'S JUST WRONG
IF I HAD TO KILL MY SNAKE I'D RATHER POISON IT RATHER THAN LET IT FREEZE TO DEATH!!!

Did your vet recheck this guy for paramyxovirus?
Such a terrible run of bad luck! I'm so sorry!

Actually, his necropsy showed meningoencephalitis and paramyxovirus. This is the one who started it all.

How long after you got him did symptoms begin to show?
This is awful, but so good of you to put the info out where people can see it!
