EMT-1:A Beta steep approach, achieved using zero/negative propeller pitch, is certainly impressive, which is just what's needed for an airshow, but it turned into a spectacular but not particularly impressive landing! A real show stopper & a hard act to follow! I replayed my VCR recording of this several times back in 1984. An interesting fact emerged, which was the sudden burst of power that could be easily heard on the original sound track & which can just be heard here at 0:26.(cont at EMT-2)
EMT-2: It occurred just as the nose-down attitude changed immediately before the a/c hit the deck. The reduced nose-low attitude & positive pitch power application was what was needed to kill the massive rate of descent, but the pilot left it far too late! Now watch another screwed-up landing which also ends in a rather spectacular fashion. Click on the "EntertainMeThai" name below then on "Landing Accident-Rarely Seen Bouncing or Porpoising".
@betulakevinii bullsh*t if you crash its never a good landing, its a landing but not a good one. And YOU may walk away but their might be other people that died....
I was At the Air Show for Hughes Aircraft Company Co. that did not make Airplanes)
Prop went through the display tents top windmilling and ended in the car park hurting several people. Russians also show their non-flying super helo at that show--lost a blade and was not able to demo.
I talked to a young man who was there with his father (who was an engineer at General Dynamics) . He said the wind did a 180 which the pilot was unaware of. The pilot came close to pulling it off even with a tail wind. He further said that the crowd could see the windsock did a 180.
I was 13 at the time and remember dad coming home very late that night, he'd been out with his crew on the airfield cleaning up the mess and repairing the arrestor cable so flying could resume the following day - the Buffalo landed on it and flattened it!. Still have some bits of the props somewhere, and a photo of the Escort estate that had a chunk of prop go right through the back of it!
Has any one ever thought preheats the pilot didn't get much say in this scenario . The last crash i saw at farnborough the pilot and a nav were killed and the two engines went into the crowd and killed know end of peaple ,that was in the fifties .
he didn't even try to flare. What was he thinking? he just drove the plane into the deck plain and simple. They should have torn up his ticket on the spot.
Sadly, the captain of this aircraft died in the crash of another DeHavilland (Dash-7) along with another highly experienced test pilot about ten years ago. They were both in their 70s at the time of the crash.
Finally the plane is a nice plane to buy, because it crashed correctly at an airshow. This is what I would call a successful crash, nobody hurt! Nice aircraft!
'No one was hurt'? Not entirely accurate stuff there from Jonny English. There were 3 on board, all survived, but the passenger suffered ruptured internal organs and broken ribs. A US docurama states it was due to engine failure! Where does Media get off? Better off talking to a bloke in a bar.
It`s a very strong plane, that was to be demonstrate! The guy did what he always does, dive to the Rwy, and do the rotating using reversed thrust- all hes got. Here in Farnborough he dived a little bit steeper. It almost worked. haha
Note how the fuselage remains COMPLETELY INTACT, the wings detatching and taking all the shock.
Anyone know where I can find film of the Sikorsky S-67 (original Blackhawk) fatal cr. in 1974?? (just been reading the accident report on the AAIB website).
Of course, I didn't actually mean it, I wanted to show you what it feels like to have a barrage of cruel things said at you for no reason, after all, pilots have to be extremely skilled to fly - I failed the pilots test, and that in itself means they should have more respect than what they get.
The approach went wrong early on. He completely misjudged the wind and ended up way too high to touch down on the threshold where he wanted to. He tried the de Havilland demonstrator pilots' trick of pulling the props into Beta range (disc or even reverse) to steepen the approach but that took impeccable timing to time it just right to get the energy back up in order to flare. This is an example of getting it badly wrong. Airspeed was far to low to flare so he hit the deck at full rate of decent
To me, this doesn't seem too bad... until, that is, I realise that the point where he touched down is pretty much level with where I was sitting this year!
Bravo Bravo....outstanding.

No the fuselage is surely not completly intact!!
perhaps in the outside view from a few hundert meters; but if you check the correct size of each part you find out that theres nothing intact!!
The fuselage dimensions are a few hundert percent over their normal's! if you try to put there wings on this fuselage nothing would be come togehter!
