I cant believe you (wandatowell) dont know who Doc is, of coarse this comes from a trip my dad took me on at the age of 9 in hopes of finding Docs' house, after many hours finally finding it at about 7:30pm, he invited the gang (2+5kids) in just as though we were family. Played songs for near 4 hours before leaving. Im not sure who God blessed more, Doc with talent, or me with that night. I'm 52 now, have his whole collection, and want to meet him once more...Lifes ambition......
@istech1610 That sounds like an amazing experience. I'm only 21 but i know Doc Watson is like the perfect embodiment of the American culture. It's a shame you don't see many people like him anymore. I wish i could see America before the 60s when people drove fast cars, wore nice suits, smoked cigarettes and got things done, and before that people rode fast horses, wore relevant clothes, smoked cigarettes and got things done.
Please tell me someonee knows the guitar chords/tabs to this song!! I can't find them anywhere online and would love to cover it at my next show! I have a version of my own but certainly not as good as the real thing....
@vinylaffair as I posted earlier, I think with capo in 5th fret, chords Am,C,F
also, there's a version by Larry Keel on an album called "DocFest" which has various artists performing Doc Watson tunes. Larry's voice is much lower than Doc's so chording may be different.
The lyrics are nearly cinematic,. This entire album is great. I think I first bought it in "67 or so at Sam Goodys in Paramus NJ along with several other albums (e.g., the Young Traditon, Skip James, Jr. Wells and Buddy Guy) for $1.99 each.
Doc is possibly the best guitarist of his genre.his body of work is immense.he's been my favorite acoustic player for years now.Ive had about 8 of his CDs. he's 88 yrs old and seldom tours now. seems to be as good a person as he is a player.Blind since he was extremely young. so welcome to the world of Doc.
I've been looking for this song forever! There's a lot more of his songs like, "Summertime", with Merle--beautiful! A lot of train songs I remember also.
My dad could play just like him when I was young so they are all near and dear to my heart. Thank you so much, it is a blessing to hear this song again.
Really interesting to hear this version. I love Sandy Denny's version, but this too is fabulous, and intriguing to hear variation in lyrics, although same story essentially.
Overall, I like Fairport convention's version more, but the conclusion of this version I feel is stronger. "Put little Matty Groves in my arms and Lord Daniel at my feet."
@Caturdayz - Fasincating...all the variations. From passing songs, poems, stories through the generations, lyrics/words, melodies change. ("Stairway to Heaven" anybody?) If there's a book on how English/Scottish/Irish music came to North America and became the root of Canadian/American country/folk music, I'd love to read it.

Another version of this great ballad. Although the guitar is brilliant it would possibly be even better without it.

To me, no other version of this classic will do since I heard Doc's. Love and gratitude for Doc are endless.
