i teared up the first time i heard the song and especially when i saw the video. it's like they were really together again, and to hear the vocals sounding so much like the beatles were in the 60s was incredible. makes me wish i could go back to the 60's when you could actually see them together
it sounds good, but the original was a piano version this is a mix up song, I can hear the choir from the other people it is quite good, but I prefer the first one
I love this song, I just wish that they hadn't put so much effects and echo on John's vocals in the Anthology version. It always sounded eerie to me. I prefer this version because the vocals are more dry and sounds more... well... like John.
@thewarninglabel the reason johns voice sounds so 'effected' is due to the fact he recorded his vocal / piano demo on a cheap old reel to reel recorder back in the 70's...when the lads took it to the studio in the 90s the tape 'wow' and 'flutter' and general noise on johns vocal could be cleaned up but only so much...
I like this very much. I still say the surviving Beatles and Yoko were rats to record this as a Beatles song when it was clear that Lennon said that the Beatles were finished.
i can't listen to this song without getting the chills. such a beautiful song. but it always makes me sad knowing that john (and now george) is gone. what an incredible legacy of music they left behind.
Much prefer this kind of raw stripped down version, I think the release was over produced by Jeff Lynne, I mean you could hardly even hear John, plus it was a slightly faster tempo. Jeff Lynne is great but I think he didnt do the final cut much justice.
Jesus, take a second listen. There's a whole drumkit in there. Much more laid back in the mix and roomy, if you like the words. But cymbals and snare drum are clearly audible.
love how much bootleg beatles/lennon bootleg there is. i really love the home demo of "i'm stepping out by lennon" (version with drum machine btw) 100x times better than the official release.
Quit second guessing the FAB's thats one Mr. Richard Starkey on those drums. Lets face it the original tape was in such poor shape that they did the best with what they had. We all know why John wasn't at those sessions.... Gun Control !!!!
Great version. Jeff Lynne's drum sound really cluttered up the song. That gated reverb on the snare and overly compressed bass drum were too big for this song. Too Wilbury's/Tom Petty with the drums
I believe this track version was part of the limited edition release cd of material they played at the time and of various takes of free as a bird and real love. From my understanding, that's what I've read online, but can't believe everything you read. Hope that helps.
This shows, how much influenze did the voice of paul made to the beatles songs...lennon, we miss you man...Beatles, they didnt ruin it, they made it better...it would be awesome if there was a video of this demo...
That was absolutely superb! Stangely enough, that's the way I envisaged it in my head before it was released (i have both take1 & 4 of the original). I would have liked you to keep Paul's and George's vocal parts to John's missing verse. Still, never mind. How about sorting this out for downloading?
John was just on piano but his piano take has been mixed with an "oops" [Out Of Phase Stereo] mix of the official release [although there must be out takes from the Beatles session]
Ah, sadly, I was still a young lad when this came out and wasn't old enough to appreciate The Beatles. I envy everyone who was alive to experience Beatle milestones, and moreso for people who actually saw them when they were all alive and together, haha.
Both the original and this superbly edited version are great. This is because when you actually hear this cut and compare it with the professionalism of the original, it does'nt literally miss a beat! Great job on this.
About the origin of the audio. It's the OOPS* track of the regular stereo mix and Lennon's original demo synchronised. It's a fake, of course, but a well done one at that.
*OOPS - Out of phase stereo - a technique used to remove the vocals from stereo recordings.
Real or not, this is a very cool version of the song, and will be promptly saved to favourites. Its good be able to hear Johns voice. My only criticism is that on Johns mumbly "whatever happened to" vocals are still there, seems to me if your going to do a mix of the Beatles version with Lennons demo you'd use the Paul or even the George version of those lyrics.
It's a mix of John Lennon's original demo (available on bootleg), edited to fit with a kind of "karaoke mix" (erasing the centre channel) of the Beatles' re-recorded version, leaving just the backing vocals and a bit of acoustic guitar.
Cool. The only semi-negative thing that I might say about Jeff Lynne's mix is a little too much effect on Johns vocal. Im sure that there were reasons for that though. I'm quite sure that "the lads" had total creative control. Not Jeff. It bothers me to hear people bad mouth Jeff Lynne. The guy is amazing. Just imagine for a minute having THAT task to perform.
Really nice of you to offer us this variant. As one can see, very little was added to the original tape of John playing piano and singing. It still sounds much too rough on the interlude and it is obviously unfinished, as chord moves show no variation and John rather mumbles where he hadn't precise lyrics. It was pretty harmful to hear this one, as the impression the official release gave, that John carries on, has been removed.
