I read the book first and stumbled upon the Barbara Walters special and I cried at the beauty and love. I hope that Heaven is like the warmth that fills my heart like their reunion.
i read the book, and i would recommend it, but it will make you cry if you've ever had to say good bye to a pet...i couldn't imagine anything, even a lion, wanting to fight Christian, and I can't imagine Christian fighting him... christian reminds me so much of my dog who died in 2009...
but i believed he had a happy n long life in the wild coz he was one of the biggest lions n he was extremly smart ,whats more,God would bless him for always coz he was the angel sent by GOD.so that was good as well. :)
HattieLovesCattie, yes i wish he had been released in a good santuary, but he wasnt.
so that i dont have to worry bout him,so that his security could be confirmed and he could see John n Ace n his other friends often.why not, maybe there was no scantuary that had good conditions or zoos in London were quite small n of bad conditons.kinda pity!
@duncaname george wasn't the original masters who bought christian at a department store, he was just a caretaker. as for a gun, who knows, it was right procedures just in case of any unforseeable possibilities.
@duncaname This video reminded me of Born Free. George and Joy Adamson gave Elsa, the true meaning of Living Free. In certain footage of the video George was seen carrying a rifle. Well whether he trusted the lion or not, we do not know. Ironically, George did not die in the jaws of the lions. Instead George, who was 83 years old then, was SHOT dead by HUMANS (Somalian bandits) at Kora Reserve on Aug 20, 1989 and was finally laid to rest there. My salute to George and may he RIP.
For those who have mentioned Born Free: George Adamson, the man in who Ace and John entrusted with rehabilitating Christian, was also the man from the Born Free story who, with his wife Joy, rehabilitated Elsa the lioness.
Just looking at this introduction picture is nothing short of astonishing. Think of it. Where else would you see, over 40 years ago, two men SITTING down with a lion??
I can never say it enough. This is truly the most incredible story I have EVER read and watched. Christian, may you ALWAYS roar. Ooooh the tears just never stop for him. I sure wish I could have had just 5 seconds with him but it wouldn't have been enough. I will never forget Christian and his story.
This is such a fantastic stroy!! I keep showing new people all the time. It's so beautiful, and I would have LOVED to have a chance to raise a lion like that!! They did a wonderful job of bringing Christian up-this story enver fails to amaze me!.
What can I say...watching this brought so much of tears down my eyes....its tears of happiness and hope that there are people like John Rendall and Anthony Bourke.
Free all animals! Let them have their natural habitat! It isn't late Still!
Be kind to all animals! Thanks to all involved in working with animals, for the benefit of the animals!
When we humans stop eating animals and realizing they are like us and realizing that we need to fight for their rights, one by one we will be like a huge army of animal lovers. One day we will win this war and we will learn what it means to respect other life, then we will see peace between humans. Slaughterhouses are totally unnecesarry today, is human greedness and desire for meat what kill millions and millions per hour and slowly killing our earth
Well I have the book and Christian moved up the river where the land was better for hunting, and George Adamson did not see him again after, but he had a pride so he was probably okay I guess. Y'all should get the book, I just got it as my Christmas present and it is lovely. The description of Christian just makes you fall SO in love with him.
George Adamson was tragically killed by a group of poachers in the area later.
Anyone that stayed at Kora Park is gone. The only man that lived is that Fitzpatrick guy that helped GA after Stanley died.C probably lived longer coz he moved into a safer reserve.
We will meet again in Paradise - Christian is there with George and Boy and Katania and super cub and all the others like Bill and GA's brother. I still watch Christian regularly - I still wish I knew more and I hope I dream of Christians life ever after - hope he was happy and had a peaceful life. He deserved it. So love you my darling Christian.
@Novatene You know what I think: I think of Azlan, and whatever happened to Christian when he moved North was a much more beautiful life in freedom than sitting in a cage as his parents did or as he himself did in Harrods. John and Ace can only be commended for what they did and all who love God's creatures on this earth should follow their example, even in the small ways that we can. As for myself, I only rescue cats but I do what I can.
omg! this is amazing story. can't help but cry everytime i watch this.... you two great man in this world! for giving christian a better life. and for making him feel loved and cared. christian is the smarter beast ever!!! love you guys!!!
Ace and John definately made the right decision to send Christian to Africa and George Adamson. Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers are to be commended for fascilitating the effort by being the link between Ace -John and George.... who was without doubt the greatest animal conservationist of the century. So much gratitude to him for Christians "success" in adapting to the life he was actually born to live. A very powerful story and one that should go from generation to generation
I watch videos of Christian over and over and will never have enough.I just love him, cute, beautiful and proud lion whose story should inspire all people to protect animals and help them to survive in this cruel world.I wish I could met Christian.Well done John and Ace!!!

Still with you Shristian - and yes, I do agree that he may have become too humanised - I only hope he stayed away from them - unfortunately the human race does not have a good track record with animals ( I mean, they aren't even nice to one another )!!
I had an idiot tell me christian was a tiger. He was 'college educated' I told him the proof. No stripes, took him back to the wrong continent. A lion wife. SO many dumbs things he said.
i just cried. what happened to christian, did they never heard of him?that is a beautyful and sad story.i just think,if it was good to take him back, maybe he was not afraid of man and that was his faith, that he came to near to the people, oh i don´t hope...
From what one of the owners himself said they came back 3 times to africa but the third time he was so much "wilder" again so they decided against going back any more times as the whole point with George's work was to re-introduce the lions to the wild and eventually turn the lions as wild as possible again. The fate of Christian on his own is not really the part of the story that intrigues me the most as by then he was just a lion living by the laws of the wild.
what do you think happened to Christian? did he become to wild to come back to see George adamson?did he forget about human beings after becoming too wild? his fate is really intriguing. He was supposed to be one of Kenia's largest lions at more than 500 pounds.........
saro ,Christian did move to Meru when the herdsmen came near him and his pride, and at that time,he had become so wild that maybe he didnt trust human any more esp those black men he had never known of;i believe that he had been as the king of Meru for 15 years or more until he got old n passed.so dont worry.
@laoqudeqiangshen No telling how long the lion lived?By 1990,he would have been 20.I do feel that he would have lived 5-10 more years in a santuary tho.
I too shed a few tears - I wish I could dream what happened - I so hope he was happy and did not suffer too much. I hope he wasn't lonely or sad - and that he met the love of his life in Meru. GA would know as they are together now. Love you Christian.
Think of Christian every day - beautiful, loving and loyal to Messrs Bourke and Rendall - my dear friend, I do hope you were happy in your freedom while alive and that your life was peaceful. 'Night Christian - love you.

With the second reunion and perhaps the interviews with Messrs Bourke & Rendall? Would dearly love to know and get a copy. Christian Forever - my beloved Narnia.
Hi to you. If you google ACE BOURKE , you will find a wonderful interviwe with the 2 boys from ABC radio Brisbane. I had the opertunity to meet Ace and John in May 09 . Wonderful People.. Steve
I wish I could meet them - but I guess they are busy people and moreso now - and famous even!! Christian has become my addiction. Forever Christian. I will look into adopting a lion or two. I have six cats at home and they are characters - so a lion or two wouldn't hurt!!
Ace and John, you guys did the most wonderful thing by taking Christian back to where he belonged, where he had to be. If only this happened to all of the animals ripped from their natural habitats to be sold into lives of misery because of our greed. Humankind WAKE UP!
There was actually a minister in that period of time that believed that Christian was a reincarnation of the lion that didnt eat Daniel in the Bible, he actually had several higher standing figures in the vatikan behind him on that...weird stuff.
Christian lives on through these sites and the books and dvds and if this stirs enough passion to ensure that lions and other wildlife are protected and can indeed live safely in their own habitat then so much the better. As for me, I watch Christian every day - he is my darling and I can only pray he did indeed live a good life with his pride and little ones - wherever they went. Thank you Messrs Bourke and Rendall and the late George Adamson who made it all possible. My wonderful Christian
read the book last night and remember reading online that G A said before he died that he heard C moved to a safer area up river in Meru National Park and that he heard that the lion may have gotten up to 500 lbs.He also heard of no big lions being shot or killed either so maybe Christian did make it to an old ripe age after Geo A died. This would be 1989.Ace and John did make the right decision as they released the lion at a park that was somewhat protected.
Another poster said that the guys went back there in 1974 hoping to see Christian again and that wasn't the case.C and his pride had moved on,most likely to the Meru River area. All the donating won't keep poachers away.Kenya is a poor country and its hard to find cops to track the poachers.
incredible story,i have always loved these animals makes u wonder how ppl can go out and hunt them down, maybe soon we might not have these lovely animals on our planet, enjoy them while they are here.
that would be my dream if i had the chance to do something remarkable like them 2 guys done, lets hope christian had a wonderfull life cause i think they ended up not ever seeing him again :(
My Mom used to tell me the story of her great-uncle who was a Dr.This was like in the 1930's.He would tell people that someday the air would be too dirty to breathe and that all the animals would live in zoos. They just laughed at him.
Just watched the documentary...Christian is definitely a role model of his kind. He just disproves all those ignorant humans that animals even lions are capable of such love and intelligence to deserving mankind like Ace and John. A wonderful story!!!
Truely a remarkable story. It proves to you how intelligent animals are. Christian rembered them and showed them a lot of affection even when he was older. This actually made me cry when i was watching. He brought so much joy to the lives of Ace and John...
I tried watching the documentary, but it's not available online if you're from a US domain. However, this gives some idea. I hope they release it here for US audiences soon. I've read the book, and the whole story is non-stop fascinating and touches a deep place in the soul. These two guys are such a pleasure to listen to, and there's no one on earth to compare to Christian. He is truly charismatic, the very definition of lion-hearted.
I just saw Ace and John at the Natural History Museum in NY and they showed this clip...wonderful! They are both just terrific human beings. By a wild coincident, Tony Fitzjohn was there, and he spoke for almost half an hour about the realities of wildlife rehab work in Africa--very sobering. Bearing in mind the daunting task ahead, it nevertheless was a lovely evening. Thanks for posting this so I can have a 'souvenir' of the evening!
This is a great clip. I'm so glad to see it and it's so much better that Ace & John narrated this themselves. I would like to see them redo the documentary and narrate the whole thing themselves.
Hi KatieKat. I tracked down ACE's email address and sent him a short note. His reply was both quick and inspirational. He posed the question of 'How do we turn the interest in Christian into something that can make a difference" My reply was similar to your sudgestion .Ace, John, Tony, Gareth & Virginnia should all narrate Christion and all the other Born Free documentaries. Remind the world that wildlife is more important than a billion greedy stockbrokers. Cheers Steve
I was really amazed of this video!!!christian the lion nice one!

After I read the video, the postive thing let me know the care between human
and lion, But the question, I still not understand, why the old master will carry
a gun for what purpose. The answer is did he trust the lion ? the answer
is not. So we need to distinguish man and lion differenly

I love this clip too. Very moody and their voiceover is fantastic.

Thanks for posting this. I was hoping to see footage of their final visit with Christian. I'm glad that John and Ace narrated this.
