well as niki lauda once said, "he is the craziest bast*rd i've ever met!" Senna and Raikkonen both mad ballsy moments but Gilles was like this week-in-week out :)
Gilles was a daredevil, driving on 3 tires and driving with a wing covering his view (and driving perfectly down the race line), and going FULL throttle down Long Island.
I remember this, he wasn't exactly the rainmaster (that goes to Senna) but he handled very well and put the right amount of gas to the ground. I still don't know how he managed to maneuver around the track with a wing in front of him, much less not losing control going around corners.
I don't think this was the short lived "fan car", Ferrari were very weak in the chassis category back in those times so their flat 12 and turbo V6 made up for it.
@Erik2Ammo If it wasn't raining in that race, he would've fallen back in the pack, in the rain the wing wouldn't matter that much because of lower racing speeds.
This is from the CBC isn't it? I rememeber watching it. Gilles would never be black flagged in Montreal....I believe he finished 3rd! This is what happens when you put a good old Canadian snowmobile racer in a Ferrari....I think his brother still races snowmobiles.
I'm proud to say I was there watching from the grandstand at that corner in the pouring rain that day, with my brother. We were there for the first Montreal Grand Prix when Gilles won his first GP too. He was the greatest. Obviously you can't really compare drivers of different eras. But when you read what his contemporaries/ fellow drivers thought of him, it makes you wonder what other drivers inspired that kind of awe and respect from their rivals. Maybe only Clark and Fangio.
Gotta give him credit for driving the 126C1 wich according to Harvey Posthlewaite was crap undrivable with a massive turbolag and broken front wing. That's what I liked about Villeneuve he never gave up and allways battled to the end but he was fair and square and at the end of the day he could say that it was a good dice. Only Driver who comes close to him is Kubica lets hope that can get back behind the wheel
Read the comment about Jys not being Villeneuve, I really rate Gilles the man was a genius of that there is no doubt but Jackie Stewart was a triple world champion & Villeneuve killed himself without winning the title once. That speaks volumes, formula 1 is a thinking mans game, the fearless are usually listed amongst the dead.
@footlongtallywacker: Type "Stewart Senna interview" in the YouTube search field and hear Jackie argue with another fearless dead driver. Yes, Jackie was of a generation wherein if you drove too frisky, certain death was the penalty. I've heard him rail against the younger's generation's irresponsible driving, brought on by the increased crashworthiness of the cars. I was at that Montreal race - in those days I and others thought "Kamikaze" wasn't too extreme a word to describe Gilles.
I am a huge fan of Gilles but he should have stopped or been ordered to stop. Probably because it was the Canadian Grand Prix so he was allowed to continue.
Yes, it was great that he could control the car in that condition but for the safety of the other drivers and the fans, it should have been stopped.
@SuperColossal33 At the time, if I remember from some magazine... They had a panel at the steward office One of them was from the Canadian GP but was only to supervise, one from USA, and some FIA guys (2 or 3)... And, at one point the Canadian say what is that? And the others one start looking at that with really big eyes and, when the wing fall off say "I've seen Nothing!".
Since nobody complain, that they see "nothing" except for the Canadian who can't call the shoot (neutrality)... Well!
@therrydicule I don't think, I think it's all FIA. Gilles did something similar to this at Zandvoort driving around with 3 wheels on the car shooting dirt all over the track, he got no black flag, and then got upset that his pit crew werent repairing the damage, only when he got out of the car did he notice a wheel was missing lol.
@SuperColossal33 Well, from what I remember it was "worst" than just FIA because.... Well, the neutral representative did see it and say a comment while the guy from the FIA decide to do like they did not see it. These guys from that time were more liberal than now and liked a good show... Which Gilles was putting. So they decide that they seen nothing; the Canadian did his job, to stay neutral.
However, if Brabham (for instance) would have been complained, it would have been different ;)

Too much politics in the era where Senna and Piquet drove.
But give you right, it would have been interesting, too see Villeneuve vs. Senna.
