It was a horribly time in Chile, however the country is nothing like it now. Before you classify a country based on a sad and dark time in its history more than 30 years ago, you should first try to get acquainted with that country's present.
Maybe so, but however it has changed the past will forever remain and I would never travel there under any circumstances for any reason, just too horrific, IMO.
The country is beautiful and the Chileans are great people. But politics and greed are simply disgusting. This coup was about the rich being pissed off at having to give back some of their inherited holdings
I'm sure it is and I'm sure the people are great, however, I would never feel safe traveling to any country that had had incidents as bad as the ones portrayed in the film. Way too scary for me.
Yes, but the country is not horrible. It was just Anaconda Copper, other American businesses and the big landowners who wanted to make sure that they maintained the flow of money in their direction. There are few countries that have a clean jacket.... Check for agarophobia...:-)
I never said other countries were entirely clean, but no country I ever heard of has a curfew where you're shot and killed nor do the police/soldiers ride around with machine guns at the ready nor do they torture people drag them from their homes in the middle of the night and torture them. Nor do they have training programs using live people to show how to torture. Agoraphobia? Nope, just a desire to live relatively free from maniacs which is why I would never venture south of the USA, (0:
Well, Chili in this moment are clean, because all society looks to the future. Pinochet is dead, Manuel contreras now are in jail. And the democracy are strong and the people work hard.
We are a new country and the hate is part of the past. Chili is a secure country, and we are very diferent to others countries, like Venezuela or Peru. Here, the U.S citizens are welcome.
sorry my very bad english, but maybe my point of view are more clear. See you !!
@milinkovic10 I have friends who came here from Chile. They despise the Junta but are glad that Chile is back on its traditional road of elected Governments.
I'm proud of Chile's successes, it's climb up from dictatorship and its economic progress. Chile is a great contrast to Argentina. Argentina which is a basket case because it borrowed money but would not repay it and today is stealing from its own people.
i think otherwise. i think you're still crazy. have you deeply thought about those soldiers killing their own civilians? why would they join the service to support a pathological dictator like Pinochet.
skylur, it may have paassed your attention, but it was the US administration who along with US multinationals insigated the coup. You may not wish to travel outside of the USA, which is your right! But, be aware that the country you live in effectively killed democracy in Chile on September 9 1973, and therefore is giulty by association for the disapperance and murder of thousands of Chileans. BTW, the same happened in other central and South American states!
It did not pass my attention, but here in the USA we do not have police shooting people on sight nor do we have sports stadiums used for mass murder nor do we torture and murder our own people on a grand scale. I know re the US involvement in the coup that was clarified in the movie and I am also aware of other Latin American countries going through similar issues. So chill out and relax. Don't take it so personally, you'll live longer. Bottom line, Missing is not exactly a tourist draw.
I disagree skylur, the whole issue of Human Rights is a deeply personal one. It should concern us all, regardless of our country of origin. I agree that Missing is not a prime tourist draw, but then again neither is Mississippi Burning. Also, police have been known to shoot to kill without issuing a warning in many countires, including the US. Erm, didn't the Bush administration sanction torture? Or was that just media spin! Must go now...its been good reading your point of view:)
No, that administration was run by Cheney and Rumsfeld, also, there has never been violence here on that scale, ever, and certainly no torture of our own citizens or the horrors depicted so vividly in Missing. The murders that happened in the South are an anomaly and not countrywide, and again, our police do not drive around with machine guns, nor do we have stadiums devoted to murder. In the matter of which country is the most egregious torture/murder wise, South America has us all beat.
"Nope, just a desire to live relatively free from maniacs which is why I would never venture south of the USA" - skylar
Sky`s dead on. Countries like Mexico constantly live in a never ending spiral
of violence and civil rights abuse. Mexicans should just hand their country over to the USMC and let us enact the US Constitution down south and straighten their sh&% out! :D
@RideMyBMW Are you kidding me? America isn't on a never ending spiral of violence and civil rights abuse? You better believe Bush set us on that path too. We aren't as bad off as those south of our border...yet...but If you think otherwise, you are either brainwashed or fooling yourself.
@concussedcarneous No thanks, typo yes, but if you haven't figured it out, I think you might need a hand yourself, tying your shoes. Byebye, amd you're welcome.
@concussedcarneous They annoy the annoyable. And it is not an inside joke, you just have to figure it out on your own. I am sorry, I never explain jokes, it's bad humor, ask any comedian.
Don't bother answering, please. If you feel like being insulting and an idiot, then you will have to do so alone within the confines of your narrow mind. By bye and you're welcome, again.
Johnny, they probably edited them out to avoid lawsuits and protect corporate interests. After all, the main reason Nixon helped these monsters seize power was because Allende intended to socialize everything and, for obvious reasons, corporations (not just American ones, either) didn't want that. I doubt these companies want others to be reminded of their role in the coup. I realize this is an over simplification, but Youtube isn't really the place for in-depth discussion.
This powerful Costa-Gavras's film has undergone censorship since its release in 1982. Several scenes with the signs of U.S. corporations have been cut from both the video and DVD versions. Perhaps the U.S.sponsored coup of an elected president, Salvador Allende, by the Chilean military was more about protecting U.S.corporate interests than safeguarding democracy? Take a closer look at the top of the stadium where Pinochet's prisoners are held. The ads for U.S. companies have been edited out.
Of course the coup was not about protecting democracy! That's an oxymoron. You don't protect democracy by overthrowing a democraticaly elected president, who happens to be a socialist, and imposing a military junta, that preserves US corporate and political priviledges in the country.
So was the censorship of this movie done to protect corporate interests or uphold the image of democracy? If free speech is the cornerstone of democracy, then censorship is the wrecking ball. On a more personal note, my post was made to remember the lives of Charles Horman, Frank Teruggi and Victor Jara. The latter was a popular Chilean singer/songwriter executed by the military shortly after the coup. But before they killed him they cut off all his fingers.
Freedom of expression(which is broader than freedom of speech) is NOT the cornerstone of democracy. The cornerstone of every political system is repression. And every political system uses certain ideals as the grounds for its legitimacy.Freedom of expression is put forward by democracy (amongst other ideals)to gain legitimacy in order to protect specific class interests. The inherent class orientation of every political system is its own wrecking ball. And that goes for democracy as ell.
