  • When I was a kid, my mom would say, "There's Aunt Juanita's song," whenever this came on the radio.

"Why?" I would ask. Everybody else would be laughing, but didn't tell me why.

Years later, I learned that, because of her religion, she and my uncle abstained from sex on Sunday, and tried to insist that everybody else did also.

  • 51 years ago TODAY, Connie Francis scored a #1 Hit with "My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own". Many more Top 10 Hits, and an impressive International career followed. - Am I the only one who feels it's long overdue to induct Connie Francis into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? Connie and Paul Anka have been the most overlooked candidates for this honor!

  • @multitalentino Many believe that she should have been inducted at the start.

  • FROM GREECE

  • Todas sus canciones son excelentes y muy buenas para nuestros oidos, romanticas y alegres.

  • Beautiful, which country is this song from? I always though this is from Italy.

  • Απίστευτη!

  • Opening part that Connie sings translates: "No matter how long I look and I search I will never find a place that makes me as crazy as the port of Piraos." In Greek, phoenetically: "Oso keeyiampsaxo then vrisko allo lay manee, trellee na me he kanee, oso to piraos." Connie sang the chorus as well as some bars of the verses in Greek.

I found movie amusing when American tourist Homer tries to "reform" Melina, but his attempt to play Pygmalion has its setbacks.

  • Someone sent this to me back in 1998 (and posted on my CF website forum section): A lady from Piraos, a suberb of Athens, remembers them filming the movie. It's stuck in her childhood memory. She said of Connie singing in Greek, although there is an American accent, is pronounced perfectly; totally understandable.

I heard the song from Connie's "Never On Sunday" album, decided to see the movie. I noticed is Connie doesn't sing same lyrics as Melina (not to release a song about prostitution!)

  • While this was not a single release for Connie, it has become the most widely known version. It was set to be released by her as a single, but Where The Boys Are was flying up the charts and the release of Never On Sunday was postponed. It was released on her million selling LP of Never On Sunday and it was she who was invited to sing the song on the Academy Awards Show and it won to everyone's surprise.

  • The Greek lyrics do not translate exactly into English. The Greek title is the "Boys of Piraeus". The story of the song, is about a sex-industry worker who is proud of the children who live in Piraeus, the port of Athens.

  • I agree Melina did a great job in the movie--she was a talented actress.

  • Melina Mercouri comes in a very poor second best compared to Connie`s absolutely

superb voice and immaculate singing ability. The way in which this song was done is

for sure her "usual superb performance". Why not sing in Greek? With such a voice.

She did the Greeks proud. She is an all time great.

  • @groenduif

Melina Mercouri had spirit and vision, she wasn't just a "barbie" gifted with a nice voice and that's exactly what makes her performance unique.

And, to make things clear, the Greeks may have plenty of reasons to be proud of, but none of them is C.Francis! (also, she shouldn't have sung in Greek, because it is repulsive to use a language completely unfamiliar to you just to show off)

  • @iiiwwww Connie is an international artist who found worldwide success at at time when music was not "global"She adapted her music to appeal to different cultures and her record sales are testimony to her success. If as a Greek you feel your language is debased in this otherwise excellent performance i understand because I hear how English is spoken by some people today!Prior to her breakthrough in 1958 Connie was about to take up a scholarship at NY University-to call her a Bimbo"is uncalled for

  • @MrJohnnywill Sucess due to record sales doesn't necessarily relate to quality. Ok, she is a good singer, but there are other artists, better than her, that did not make such a kind of success, because of the circumstances. In general, I value performers more than simple singers and, in my orinio, Mrs Francis is closer to a singer. You see, European culture is deeper than a couple of nicely sung songs. Also, just because you mentioned, the scholarship has few to say about her intelligence.

  • @iiiwwww Sorry but I think it is churlish not to give credit where it is due-I could cite some of Connie's awards and achievements but a man who thinks a scholarship to a major university says nothing of an individual,s intelligence will make light of anything.Connie Francis a "bimbo"?-I think not!

  • @MrJohnnywill I think that artists like Bob Dylan, Andrea Bocelli, Yann Tiersen, Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Loizos have many more to say to people through their music than "stupid cupid stop picking on me". But a man who thinks that a scholarship to a major university suffices to prove an individual's intelligence, does not have the required depth of thought to appreciate them. Obviously, American subculture, deriving from the capitalistic system, is much stronger than I thought.

  • @iiiwwwwso now we broaden the debate to

American capitalism and various other artists-but unrepentant for calling someone a Bimbo who is plainly not.I'll expect a response-probably making more irrelevent points-but I leave you to have the last word. That's it from me it's been fun!!!

  • @iiiwwww Connie's talents go way beyond her million sellers such as Stupid Cupid. Her album traacks and liver performances attest to that, such as The Gershwin Medley and The Cole Porter Medley found on youtube, and also LPs such as Songs To A Swinging Band, Love italian Style, The Swinging Connie Francis to name a few. She must be the most versatile singer.

  • @Shrinksjp I agree--she's very underrated--but not by her millions of fans. Listen to each song and its pure gold. And, of course, she's the best selling female artist of all time so that speaks for its self.

  • @windstorm1000 I'm a great fan of Connie, but wkipedia gives Madonna as the best selling artist, Connie isn't even in the top 10??

  • @96rottie Oh yes she is. she is number 3 with 56 chart hits and 16 or 17 million sellers, according to Billboard.

  • @Shrinksjp Ahh then I (happily) stand corrected my friend!.

  • i wish my boyfriend kiss me every day :)

  • @jude1984miracle Give it a rest at least on Sunday or maybe Tuesday... just kidding...lol

  • Lol the movie, "The Craft" brought me here embarassingly enough, but fun stuff.

  • Is the post

  • Why did she have to sing in Greek? She's ruining the language. Actually... why did she have to sing this song anyway? Melina Mercouri is the only one who could sing it properly...

  • @iiiwwww Unfortunately Melina couldn't sing. Connie does her usual superb performance.

  • @cwoodn Well, the "usual superb performance" is 100% passion - free. What's more, she absolutely abuses the hellenic language and, honestly, one can't stand one's mother language sounding that ridiculous...

  • @cwoodn Not fair to say Melina couldn't sing just because nobody sings like Connie. Melina was an excellent actress who brought this film to life... which Connie wasn't so to each his or her own best skills.

  • @iiiwwww Cause Connie's is the definitive version. Melina was not invited to sing it on the academy awards. Connie was invited.

  • @Shrinksjp

So what? In Europe, it is well known that quality has nothing to do with the popularity of a piece of art. For example, Andrei Tarkovsky was one of the greatest directors ever, but unfortunately not very known, because he didn't make films in order to make himself famous. From my point of view, academy awards represent whatever sells. In most cases, they have nothing to do with art.

  • @iiiwwww Needless to say, Connie's version is the definitive one.

  • @Shrinksjp

Yes, of course. And this is the exact reason why most people have no relation to arts and civilization...

  • @iiiwwww I think we are differing on acting vs. singing. Connie is a great artist in vocal skills and her best work is her least popular work found on her albums and live performances and she also agrees with this. she has said herself that her hits are her least favorite performances.

  • @Shrinksjp

Well, I am not a Connie's fan, so I am not able to know her least known performances. You are probably right, I guess.. I just expressed my feelings on this particular song. You see, I believe that a song is best performed in the language it was originally written in. Also, I think Melina litterally gives life to this song.

  • @iiiwwww Connie Francis' is a fabulous version, but there's no doubt that she did invade. Her "Irish" album was fantastic because of her voice, but the content was stereotypical.

  • I think the melody to 'memory' (Cats) is a rip off this.

  • I met her a few days before my birthday in my teenage years i even got her autograph!

  • English doesn't start til 0:47

  • Would "Never on a Saturday" have been just as successful?

  • Comment removed

    smoooooooooooooooottthhhhh.....

  • loved u even when i could not understand the song. Fell in love with your voice and love it till today.

  • Bellissima Connie Francis.

  • THATS MUSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of my early favorites .... still is. Thank you for the great memories

  • The original song written by the clever Haztidakis is about a greek prostitute from Piraeus who refuses to sleep with her clients on a sunday.

  • @fuxxx21 That's what the MOVIE is about. The song, in the original Greek, is about her love of her home town, Piraeus.

By comparison, the English lyrics are retarded.

  • @scotpens Would you care to explain? In the Greek lyrics she speaks of 'seducing a perfect stranger with her song' and her having jewls around her neck and good luck charms. Piraeus was and is prostitute central. Always has been. The lyrics reflect this. Many young men used to live in the brothels and the only family they knew were the prostituteswho mothered them, however most who lived through it, loved the energy of the place, the energy she describes with her referrences to the 'night.'

  • @fuxxx21 I re-watched the scene where Melina sings the song, and the second verse does indeed make clear references to her profession. Maybe I didn't remember because she speaks rather than sings that verse. My bad.

  • @scotpens Totally retarded. I cant beleive they sell this off as the original!

  • @exxxcccited This version was performed by Connie on The Academy Awards Show and it won. Her LP Never On Sunday sold millions.

  • @exxxcccited you mean this is also a COVER? of WHAT?!?!?!

  • @fuxxx21

    its a classic

  • @fuxxx21 Or if one watches the movie, he could say its about an American with Hellenic (Greek) name "Homer Thrace" who comes to Greece to find why the world is unhappy, as stated in the movie. And he is lucky to find a Greek woman that knows English, and she only works with people she likes...

  • A golden oldie indeed. A treasure. Thanks to my brother Patrick for sending me

    so many oldies but goodies..!

  • Thank you.

    5*****.

  • una voz fabulosa un recuerdo hermoso

  • What a pretty voice Connie Francis has ! Very enjoyable, thank you !

  • she has a great beautiful voice!

  • She has a stunning voice. Could listen to her all day. My dad played her in his old player all the time. Her songs are just amazing

  • Connie sang this on the Oscars when it won.

  • Just a little history lesson for all those curious: Nana Mouskouri originated the Greek-language version (this version used the same music with altered lyrics), entitled "The Guys of Piraeus". Melina Mercouri also sang the song within the film, and all three renditions are excellent!

  • Love this song! It won the Oscar for the film "Never on Sunday"--and with the exception of Once and Slumdog Millionaire, most modern Oscar Best Song winners simply don't compare. Connie Francis is love.

  • @cinemaniac86 She's just Gorgeous: isn't she?

Pity her life did not run as well for her.

  • great song

  • :D love this song!!

  • she's singing the beginning in Greek?

  • @Victorian9322 exactly

    Oso ki an psazo

    Den vrisko allo limani

    Trelli na m' echi kani

    Apo tou Pirea

  • The original version was sung by Melina mecouri of "Topkapi" fame !

  • @velgean The original version was sung by Melina Mercouri at film "Never on Sunday".

  • beautiful song ! Its so sad u dont get to hear these kinds of songs.

  • @yesbabunni : We would all gag!

  • i love connie francis

  • She just slays me every time! And how could she sing in so many languages? Like 15 or something...amazing

  • the greek actress who originally sang this became a greek minister of culture and many funds by the government in tribute to remind us of her role which was taboo in those days as she represented a whore. but greeks love art and respect it no matter what

  • too busy on Sundays...

  • No one can even come close to Connie Francis.

  • The composer of this song is Manos Hadjidakis who wrote it in 1960/61

  • Lindoooooo!!!!!!

  • I can only guess we Never will see or hear another pop singer of her like again!

Virtually everything she did - especially pre-80 was beyond reproach!

  • I'd forgotten what a super voice she had.

  • I heart this beautiful song from radio when I was a little school boy in primary school.

  • her greek accent is funny :) but nice try ! thumbs up!

  • ...not Epic - Coral was the label ...

(was checking out another CF song when it came to me)

  • Oh! What a big surprise because even if I am a big fan of Connie I never knew she also made a cover of this song.

Thank you so much Xiaochein for this wonderful gift!
