controversy surrounding malcom not withstanding, this track was nothing less than a watershed moment for the music and entertainment industry. dare i call it a "hip-hop 9/11"...? there was the world BEFORE this video, and then there was the world AFTER this video. however in the case of buffalo gals, everything was irrevocably altered for the BETTER.
@llorensl Because sadly, we (not myself personally) feel that after having so much taken from us, it's frustrating when whites try to "steal"/copy hip hop. The 4 elements were literally created out of nothing, meanwhile the vast majority of white schools had visual arts and music programs. B-boying was just some guys dancing on PAVEMENT. So it's frustrating that after inventing our own artform in the slums, whites, who have everything else at their disposal, still want to take part.
holy fuck, for real? man thats early days and the start of something big. Duck Rock was an amazing intro to the hip hop world. Thats the kind of stories most people who know anything about hip hop want to hear....any chance I can contact you direct, would love to hear more about history in the making/changing. RIP Dondi. Cant believe you worked with him. ABSK.
The first video I ever worked on, made it up as we went along. Most of it was shot in and around Washington Square Park in NY, and Uptown on Amsterdam Ave during the Halloween Gay Parade. The girls are wearing Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren World's End 'Buffalo Collection' Dondi White is doing the graffiti. The 'rappers' are See Divine The Master Mind and Just Allah The Superstar who had their own weekend radio show on WBLS NY. D Malcolm was, by no means,a rip off, get your facts right!
For all the people saying he was some original b boy and represented hip hop, he was pretty much universally hated by actual hip hop artists. He was kind of a racist, and he was basically just stealing ideas from black cultures around the world and trying to make a profit off of it. Afrikaa Baambata called him a culture vulture.
No disrespect to Afrikaa Baambata - infact, much love to the god but stealing ideas? the same could be said about Baams use of Kraftwerks Trans Euro Express to make Planet Rock in which Baam clearly gives credit to the German group as being a big influence in their music as well as Electro in general.
@doc7114 Saying Malcolm was universally hated by actual Hip Hop artists is stretching it a bit. Malcolm help bring Hip Hop to the UK as well as Europe. Lets face it, at the time the Hip Hop market was fairly new and very limited. If you wanted to make money, Hip Hop wasnt very lucrative at the time. I think he had a love for something fresh. Such as you and I have love for Hip Hop. Nothing more, nothing less. Peace.
This is what real Hip Hop transpired from. 4 elements of hip hop. Malcolm was way before his time. Unless you were around this era of early hip hop, you probably will never understand it.
@DrWhiggs ... "only on TV" Most geniuses have some form of madness or another. Your point is what exactly? This song still RULES! The Clash, Sex Pistols and hip - hop wouldnt have had its exposure without Malcolm McLaren. So what if he was a pederast. Bush was a war criminal. And?
Big Up Rsc!!! Dondi! & Malcom mclaren!!!!! All the the people I mention can't imagine how much influence they've had in my life! As a graff artist and beat maker!!!!!! Rest in power !! I am forever grateful for being apart of that era! Peace!!!
It saddens me to think that a tune that had such a massive influence on not only people, but culture, music itself and dancing especially, is being ridiculed by uneducated dumb fucks, talking shit about Jamoroqui and Eminem. What we, as an older generation experienced during the 80's was unique, creative and inspiring in so many ways. The majority of youth today sadly wont experience anything like it, with all of this overhyped commercialised marketing technology and recyled garbage.
@johnnyjayramone actually the current state of hip hop today is the most creative it's been since 1995ish. im talking artists such as A$AP ROCKY, OFWGKTA, LIL B, KENDRICK LAMAR, etc... all these have been breakthrough artists in the past year, doing shit no one else has done before. the culture and fashion has been cooler and fresher than we've seen before.
@johnnyjayramone totally agree , the 80s was the start of it , breakdance , bodypop , you only have to watch michael jackson , the 80s was his best time ever ,,, but forget about theese assholes who was not there , we were , and sadly it will never be repeated ,,,, i wish i had a de lorean , to go back to 1985 ,, ha ha ha ha ,,,
