@SunnyOldSpice for characters, look at a lot of fashion design, modern/everyday fashion and the far out creative runway fashion as well as military, swat, seal, army and culture based costumes/masks/clothing, medievil armor and armor from all eras and cultures. Save favorites folders of everything you can find on the internet for reference and inspiration - Do not copy runway fashion or original designs by fashion designers but use them for inspiration. Hey, Mike! Are you using an Intuos3 for this? Your brush seems like it has some rotation going on with it.. Unless you just made it really small? (while you paint the edges of the feathers in 05:17)
@JSolorzanoArts1 thanks, yea i was just rambling about what was going on in my head and what I might have been referencing while designing this creature. The most abstract of alien creatures can always relate back to real world animals.
Nice :D Makes the cassowary look like a pompous chicken. So realistic too.
I was surprised that you do your sketches digitally, I had always presumed that they were done in fine pencil, though it makes more sense when it comes to fine detail.
@YasminJFosterArt I do usually sketch mostly in pencil, pigment liner pens and traditional mediums. Though this is more of a black and white render, yea the details are easier this way as well as the modifications and changes made in the beginning. It's also a little easier on my hand.
great work. any tips for a illustration/character design student?

@khovaxandrauss It's an Intuos 2, so it's probably just because the brush is small - I tilt the angle occasionally. I'm painting in PS CS3

It's cool how you are explaining the anatomical parts of this creature and comparing it to other animals.
