  • You have not lived until you've played the bass trombone part to this song.

  • as a trumpet player, i must say, this HURTS to listen to.... but it hurts so good!!!!!!

  • i play this song on bari sax for my school jazz bad its the best song i ever played (got a solo :)

  • @xl1riot1lx

wat school you go to, just wondering

  • Second alto sax on this and to people saying trumpets best instrument... Id say a halve between sax and trumpet. Doing this in middle school jazz band

  • I love everything before 4:37

  • Maynard ferguson is my role model and only hope to be 1% of what he is.

  • @trumpetplayergirl why not have miles davis as your role model and be 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% of maynard

  • If you are a trumpet player like myself than you hate maynard Ferguson simply because u r jelous lol jk. I love this stuff!!! Trumpet is the best instrument hands down no questions asked. Trumpet players think they are the best because they are.

  • this i a 1000 times as slow as normal...

The Big band at my school can play this much much better...

    (and i´m 1st trumpet....lol)

    But a nice song!

  • @ThomasMR1 Hey, everybody! This guy can play better than Maynard Ferguson!

  • @ThomasMR1 You're an idiot

  • @ThomasMR1 You're a dumbass. It's supposed to be this slow. It's a slow dirty rock song. Your "Big Band" in High school can most certainly not play this better, guaranteed, take this from 1st trumpet in a High school Jazz Big Band doing this piece. And your last sentence? I believe you meant *This is a brilliant super-mega-awesome slow dirty rock song that is a far superior version of what I can and will ever be able to play. #KThxBye.

  • @ThomasMR1 Riiiiiiight.

  • 1:17 g below double high c

    2:30 double high c

3:08 another g below double c, and another at 3:27

and a reverse chromatic scale starting at A below double c at 4:10

    4:15 Eb and F above double c

more awesome at 4:17 I can't really recognize

a conclusion at Double Bb and C

    Maynard- u da man!!!

  • Always wondered where this track came from. Always loved it.

  • @darinbar It's a Herbie Hancock chart off of the Album "Head Hunters."

  • I can play trumpet like that......nah, Im just kidding......cant get anywhere near that level. not even close.

  • At 2:24 this is the best run up, pause and then crush the high note I've ever heard.

  • tpstrat. Jelous?

  • I'd quite happy have sex to this piece

  • @McL0vable You accidentally a whole word.

  • @McL0vable my wife would slap me and you know why!

  • We played this in my highschool jazz band and i was barely hitting that G and in one part there was a written C above high C. My band director asked me (sarcastically) why i didn't play it and i just laughed at him. :P

  • Now only if I could convince a band to follow me and play this as I walk down the street...

  • 24 people have a different prefence in music than I do, and I respect that.

  • I remember playing this my freshman year in jazz band on trumpet. First time I ever hit a high Eb :)

  • my marching director taught our sousa line this today...so fresh

  • I feel bad for the guys that play dah dah dah dah.... da da. like A THOUSAND TIMES, but then i think... YOUR FAULT FOR CHOOSING THAT INSTRUMENT! great song btw.

  • @GrishTheIsh Are you kidding? I play bass bone and it's the best part ever. The guys who play the bass line are always the ones to start a Chameleon jam. :D

  • @DrivingPark yeah but then you gotta play it the whole song.

  • @GrishTheIsh But that's awesome. I should know, I've done it :D

  • this is funky as hell

  • 24 people need to gtfo

  • Comment removed

  • this song is fun to play! I play sax in high school and sometimes i get somebody on the drumset to play a funk beat and another guy to play the background part and i solo to it. too fun to do that.

  • 24 people are either deaf or jealous!

  • Shit I am terrible compared to this guy.

    Actually all of these guys.

  • ya gotta have balls to try to pull this tune off.

    totally badass

  • You give someone enough time and experience, and just about anyone can play a screamer on a trumpet. The difference from them any those like Maynard, Derek Watkins, and Armstrong, is that they make it sound good. And that comes from practice, skill, and not a little natural ability.

  • omfg , speechless...

  • I cum every time Maynard hits those high notes.

  • you have not lived until you have played the bass trombone part for this piece

  • @farfenoogen i concur, the bass part :D

  • @farfenoogen i agree man.. i have played this song a couple times for a couple big bands and jazz bands.. trombone is the heart and soul of jazz

  • @farfenoogen You are so right...it was so fun...We played it as an encore to the Ole Miss Jazz Festival..MANY years ago...and we had two of them...we were rockin.

  • @farfenoogen I would like to live very badly right now.

  • @farfenoogen i doing that in my home towns youth Big Band.

  • @farfenoogen i played the trumpet for it. hows that for living

  • @farfenoogen I played it, fucking awesome!

  • @farfenoogen No, the Tuba part.

  • That maynard one some bitch

  • whos playing the guitar on this track?

  • I play trumpet and I can safely say, He is one of the best trumpet players I've ever seen

  • I've heard SO much groovier versions. This was pretty out of sync..

  • @tpstrat14 Tell you what. Why don't you post your version? Then everyone can judge. Of course you won't. You're too busy hiding behind your computer screen, geek.

  • @fernmann7 workin on it right now. Check my channel tonight. WARNING: there will be no screeching, ugly sounding high notes!!! Although, I'll admit that I do wish I had more range....

  • @tpstrat14

Screeching and ugly? Baby, this is called FUNK.

  • @fernmann7 didn't see THAT comin, did ya?

  • @tpstrat14 I did check your channel. When you're able to get past page 3 of Arbans, let me know.

  • @tpstrat14 Lol if your channel is supposed to be your example of "extraordinary" trumpet performance, I suggest that you visit a grade school band, find the last chair trumpet and ask if he will give you lessons. Just some personal advice to improve your playing. :)

  • @Lolwhatnow1 Yep, just as I suspected. YOu're no better than the other 20 trolls that have insulted my BRILLIANT playing. (lol jk... I suck, but then again I don't get paid like Maynard did). To this day, not one of you useless trolls have uploaded any videos of yourself doing anything whatsoever. Come on, get out there and show us all what you got. Stop hiding behind your computer, you troll.

  • Wish ol' Maynard could play in tune !

  • @TheGhoulardi Me too, but he's Maynard. That's good enough for most people. He could be up on stage picking his ass eating chips while farting through his horn and people would scream all over the comments page "WHAT MUSIC. What a legend!!!"

  • @tpstrat14 HEAR HEAR ! He seems to have evryone fooled !

  • @TheGhoulardi Hey, Einstein. It's spelled everyone.

  • @TheGhoulardi theyre called accidentals. chromaticism is a staple of this kind of music, and maynard is in complete control of his pitch and articulation, indeed that is what set him apart from his peers; dynamic variation while maintaining accurate pitch, especially at the extreme register he plays in.

  • @TheGhoulardi When you can do it better.... lemme know. Until then shut up, and stop trying to insult a legend.

  • This is just the best. because of this song im in to all his stuff . The bass in this is fantastic! :D

  • GREAT !!!! AWESOME !!!

  • bass for the win!

  • Well personally I don't even ear the bary, its the bass bone that does all the work!

  • @MrCobalt1991 and the string bass. you can hear it over bass bone

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TIGHT!!!

  • The Tenor Sax solo in this makes me (Who normally completely totally neglects practicing) want to practice until my tongue goes numb.

  • @Barigood2012... I just finished a concert playin Bari on this song and no lie dude best freaking thing ever... I even dropped to the low A during that kick ass bass line and best suggestion if u don't already have one... Get a fibracell reed for that Bari , crazy but great

  • @elijahd123 how many trumpet players does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

answer: 4. i to do it and 3 to say that could've done it higher

  • @walsh93jazz LOL

  • @walsh93jazz it takes 1 but he dont need to screw it in he holds it up to the socket and the world revolves around him.

  • @wertwert240 top comment mate hahaha

  • @walsh93jazz Whats the difference between a saxophone and a chainsaw..........YOu can tune a chainsaw

  • @saxkid305 How many Bass players does it take to change a lightbulb?

  • We did this for jazz band. Obviously, not the trumpet part like the boss here, but we did a good job.

  • @Haeowin same, lol. I play the trumpet and i was nowhere near as awesome ;p

  • it takes chops to hit that high, even for a flute, but on trumpet...

    insane. awesome, but insane.

  • ....damn i was in class...and i popped a high c the one thats just mildy above te scale...nothin impresive but damn was i suprised...i attemtep to play the high parts in this song...FAYUL..lol i stillg ots a way to go :D

    Thanks for the post!

  • i dont think so

  • Is that... slightly distorted trombone???

  • I play trombone on this. One of the band's favorites.

  • Did Herbie Hancock make the original? He has an awsome version!

  • @dododonkey123 Yes, Herbie Hancock wrote the song- you have to check out part2 of Herbie's version- it goes in a whole different direction, and the drums in particular are amazing.

  • @emmettk yeah, i have the whole song as one (about 15 minutes). it's one of my favorite jazz/funk songs

  • I agree with Max. We definitely need to do this in band.

  • anybody got mp3?

  • This is so famous that even the retarded president George w Beethoven knows it

  • its so white.

  • Stan Kenton was the king and Maynard was the queen.(I say that in the most loving way possible!)

  • @Hempus1221

    You suck.

  • one of my favorite maynard pieces

The world lost a true trumpet legend when he left us
