  • I take my metaphorical hat off to you, cos this is amazing!!

I'm just starting up learning how to play jazz piano. How long have you been playing for? I've been playing sax for about 6/7yrs, so I'm alright improvisin on that, but how long did it take you on piano?

  • I play the piano for fun and I've always wanted to learn more about jazz piano. There's just so many chords and complications to it but i love it. What I'd give to play a tenth as good as you. Thanks for the music, looking forward to more.

  • that roll was crazy @ 1:54. this is 1 of my favorites...great music!

  • i play the piano- well i try and i like it but what really intreagues me is do these musicians learnt the piece from memory lots of times over before they can play without the music or do they just pick it uplike geniuses- surely they have to work hard on a piece doing it over and over again like anyine else- can someone answer? I know its a stupid question but it puzzles me

  • This was improvised just using a leadsheet (a chart with melody and chords). The analysis and comments came later.

Improvising is a skill that people with a jazz background work hard on. It depends on an understanding of the harmony as well as a good grasp of the language of jazz - its special idioms. Memorising the music itself is not the important thing to do - though recognising familiar harmonic/melodic patterns in the piece helps to guide the improvisor as he/she plays.

    Doug.

  • @jazz2511 Hey i have been taking jazz lessons for about two years now, and one thing that i can't seem to understand is the improve on a piece. I've been playing for about 8 years now, but jazz is definetly the hardest to pick up. I know the basics for improving on a jazz scale, but when i listen to my teacher, or this it makes me feel like my improve is about as good as chopsticks. Theres no real question in this comment, its more of a puzzled statement. But thanks for the great improve

  • Wow! I love it.

  • man,you make me cryin

  • There are no basics to "great" jazz. I'm a hardcore classical just recently starting jazz. Its complicated i like the setup of this video(telling us what you are playing while we are watching). Thanks and the music and playing is great. I love Ellington.

  • wow nice

  • a look at the description of this video would be good ;-)

  • ok , i´ll see it next time, thanks for your help.

  • que buen jazz!!! , first class jazz , pure delight

  • Wow great inspiration for my sax playing.

Just one question: Why are you using the g over an altered Bb7 in the beginning?

    I mean, I'd have expected the b13.

Or is it, in the end, a question of sound?

    Great job and explanation.

    Thanks

  • VERY nice. it's a great song to say the least.

  • the first minute reminds me a lot of a chopin barcarolle i think it was, cant remember what type of piece it was by chopin. maybe it was an influence on ellington or whoever's way of thinking about music. my knowledge of jazz is limited so excuse me if i made any stupid statements. i dunno i definately hear some chopin-style or atleast romantic-classical style melodies/ progressions in this.

  • What a wonderful gift.

  • Hi Doug, really enjoyed this and I learnt a few things too! I've attempted a solo piano version - I stole bits from the Duke/Trane album and also a version by Petrucciani. Looking forward to watching more of your videos! Great Work!

  • what kind of piano course do you take if you dont want to learn classical stuff, but more music like jazz and blues?

  • you go out, listen to a few professional jazz musicians, and get their phone numbers, or find out their phone numbers through your local music association. You then phone them inquiring about lessons :). Thats how I got mine. Either that, or a lot of listening and practice, and some music.

  • I live in a town where there is very few jazz players.. so that would be kind of hard.. I will go with "listening and practice".. Thanks anyway.

  • ive been playing piano for seven years, and i alwasy ask my piano teacher (yeah i still have to take lessons) if i can start learning stuff like that!! but she always gives me classical stuff, :( oh well. BRAVO!
