This was improvised just using a leadsheet (a chart with melody and chords). The analysis and comments came later.
Improvising is a skill that people with a jazz background work hard on. It depends on an understanding of the harmony as well as a good grasp of the language of jazz - its special idioms. Memorising the music itself is not the important thing to do - though recognising familiar harmonic/melodic patterns in the piece helps to guide the improvisor as he/she plays.
Wow, this is so unbelievably awesome! I love this song and initially I didn't think I would like this video when I read that it was your own version of it and not the original. But I listened and I like.
Was searching for videos of the Duke playing this tune and stumbled across a number of wanna-be's, but only a few secs of listening to this one caught my ear and realized I'd found a real player - now can't stop listening to your playing and want to find more. Well worth getting caught by you...
Dude, you have the soul of a teacher, congratulations on sharing your knowledge and your talent. May all these good things come back to you multplied.
I've just started working on this song for some performances next year. I though the notes you had in the video really offered some insight into the guts of what you were playing. Awesome job!
I take my metaphorical hat off to you, cos this is amazing!!
I'm just starting up learning how to play jazz piano. How long have you been playing for? I've been playing sax for about 6/7yrs, so I'm alright improvisin on that, but how long did it take you on piano?
I play the piano for fun and I've always wanted to learn more about jazz piano. There's just so many chords and complications to it but i love it. What I'd give to play a tenth as good as you. Thanks for the music, looking forward to more.
i play the piano- well i try and i like it but what really intreagues me is do these musicians learnt the piece from memory lots of times over before they can play without the music or do they just pick it uplike geniuses- surely they have to work hard on a piece doing it over and over again like anyine else- can someone answer? I know its a stupid question but it puzzles me

Just one question: Why are you using the g over an altered Bb7 in the beginning?
I mean, I'd have expected the b13.
Or is it, in the end, a question of sound?
Great job and explanation.
