@HizerKite: In my case, the noise was indeed the serpentine belt tensioner. The noise would get worse when the AC compressor would kick on. Put your heater on defrost and stick your head under the hood to see if the noise changes when the AC compressor turns on. I hope this is all your problem is!
Hi, sorry to bother you as I realise this is an old post.but I have a Mazda 6 2.3L which has a very similar sound to this. Reading the comments on your page it looks like your noise was caused by the serpentine belt tensioner, is that correct? (sorry for sounding thick but am hoping it's not me timing chain on it's way out as really love the car)
i had the same noise in my 6. i took it to the dealer and they told me it was premature wear of the bearing in the idle belt pully. they replaced it under warrenty and now at 78,000 the noise is back.
@jordanbilyeu yea that happens.. But also the tensioner can fail and the chain stretches and it rubs causing noise.. But my Wrx had this problem the Belt tensioner on the serpentine belt was bad and it sounded like rod nock lol..
not sure if you figured this out or not but most likely the VVT where the actuator pin has broken or is loose cause the timing chain to hit. You're timing is going to be off and there is a TSB for this, so if you haven't brought it in you should!!!
my 2007 Mazdaspeed3 had around 48k miles on it before I started to hear a weird scrapping noise from that same location. I also thought of it being my timing chain. Either the chain guards or tensioners; I don't know exactly but I made a scrapping noise that was RPM dependent (scrapping noise would intensify as engine rev'd faster) I never got the solution because I ended up swapping it for the 2010. Update me with any new developments!
had exactly the same noise, changed the belt tensioner, 50 bucks at carquest and stopped right away

Go to NAPA and get a good mechanics' stethoscope.

Hey thanks for the info. Can I ask how much they charged to replace it?
heynow59 9 months ago
@heynow59 The tensioner was replaced under warrantee, so I'm not sure what the price was.

Hey thats so much for the info. Can I ask how much they charged to replace it?

@heynow59: the bad tensioner was on the serpentine belt, not the timing chain. The noise would occur at idle when the AC would cycle on and off.

I have an 03 Mazda 6I with the exact same engine noise. Is the tensioner comment referring to the timing chain?
heynow59 9 months ago
The dealer determined this noise was a bad belt tensioner. They replaced it under warrantee along with my bad turbo.

@jordanbilyeu I am having the same noise did they show you the bad tensioner?

This isnt an issue. They all do it. Even new ones.
