I've been telling my wife about this movie since I met her because she IS that botanist in reality ... LOL. A brilliant academic although these days she is a bit more socially ept.
Now she will see it for the first time but with me. Thanks for posting.
This is a small classic: brilliant script, terrific acting in the major and minor roles and superbly shot. Why has it seemed to fall off the movie radar? I don't get it. And why has Elaine May not made a movie in years? Was it because of the 'Ishtar' problem/fiasco? Now most everyone seems to agree that it wasn't a half-bad movie. "A New Leaf" and "Mickey and Nicky" are the only two May films I've seen, but on the evidence of those two alone, she's to my mind a major directing talent.
@wildsterlingbill you should check out the Nichols & May chapter in Gerald Nachman's "Seriously Funny: The Rebel Comedians of the 1950s and 1960s" it goes into the reasons for Elaine May's relative obscurity about as far as the author could (she apparently hasn't given a serious interview since 1966). From what I gather from the book she's one of those temperamental creative geniuses that can't quite deal with the decidedly non-creative genius Hollywood world.
Thank you for posting this wonderful classic movie!!
I saw this film years ago on the American Movie Classics channel and I was completely blown away by what a great movie and story it really is.
There is something so unique about this film, the way it's shot. etc. I absolutely love the humor of Henry Graham and the way he speaks to everyone in that aloof wealthy tone in his voice. Wonderful Acting!!
I would love to see Elane May's original version of film that was over 4 hours long.
Fair play to you, tlcarpenter2.You have given comedy lovers a rare treat.Have tried to source this classic gem for ages, an extraordinary tour de force for a directorial debut--incredibly it's not available in Europe on DVD, movie distributors please note. This must rank as one of the funniest films ever made, right up there with Some Like it Hot, & one of the late, great Walter Matthau's best performances.Superb quality, tl! Can you post her equally funny
@sb20022 In complete agreement with you! With all the talent in front of and behind the camera, I can't for the life of me understand why this movie is still not available on DVD!
