  • These are the unsung heroes - so I've always had a soft spot for these planes. Not nimble enough for the fighter role they were originally designed for they became great in the ground attack role. Thanks for sharing this - I really enjoyed it.

  • Another problem that bedevilled the Tiffy in the early day was exhaust gas leakage from the manifolds, which then got into the cabin and poisoned the pilot; there were several instances of unexplained loss of control, mainly at lower levels where the pilot wouldn't be using oxo, resulting in 'straight-in' impacts. Eventually the manifolds were redesigned - quite an undertaking for the Sabre engine - and the cab air inlet was repositioned further forward.

  • read rolan beamonts The years flew past He flew the hurri. typhoon, tempest , canberra, english lightning and was chief test pilot TSR2 His opinion first 3 Hurricane, better at below 20000ft than the Spit and ME109, Typhoon best ground attack plane of the war,and Tempest as good as the p51 better at 2000ft when chasing the V1 In fact the best plane, period at catching the V1

  • I pity the poor sods who had to fly Typhoon and Tempests in WW2 - these heavy ground attack aircraft flew very fast and low - if hit there was no time to bale out.

  • The Hawker Tempest was probably the most formidable low -medium level single engined fighter-bomber of the second world war.

  • @OP You have a bit of everything Hawker made here, except the Hurricane.

Typhoons, Tempest II and Tempest V. Typhoon was introduced in -41 as an interceptor fighter, but with many teething problems that was largely a disaster. End -42 the probles were ironed out, but the Typhoon turned out to be much more formidable as a fighter-bomber than as a pure fighter.

Tempest was a redesigned, refined Typhoon, sleeker, more mavourable and faster. Both fast and heavily armed with four 20 mm cannons.

  • forget your spitfires, theyre just dandies.

this is a real war machine!

  • with the typhoon, the tailplane featured a two-spar box structure, but the fin was built around a multi-spar, multi rib construction. both rudder and elevators incorperated sizeable trim tabs. During the development of the typhoon tailplane problems resulted in several fatal crashes. Diagnostics of the fault took some time, the delay claming mant lives before the simple expedint of attaching fishplate strengthners to the rear fuselage joint cured the weakness.

  • That's a Tornado at 2.01! Very rare shot, thanks for sharing these mate.

  • They suffered with structral failure ie:tail kept falling off!!! These were overcome and the aircraft was used as a low level interceptor to combat the raids by Fw190 on the South Coast of Britain...note to the author anything built in the UK should be refered to as British rather than English. Britain is made up of four countries who can be very patriotic about their countries:-)

  • Tempest is every rare to see But such a great aircraft ..Much like the P-51 style of Tatics yet better diving speeds ..Germans would dive to try and lose there enemy if they were infront of them ..and in most cases would be there final mistake

  • @freakyflow a typhoon is even rarer to see such a pity there are none flying today

  • @pramboy09

raf hendon museum has an almost mint typhoon :)

not restored to airworthiness condition though.

  • Intertesting - the aircraft at .31 is a RAF Fury....

  • @dpsherry i was going to say it was a Tempest II till i seen the slats in the wing

  • @dpsherry

Ahem, no Fury at 0.31 sec. - it's a Tempest II with the Centaury radial engine...

    DK-nme

  • I love the Typhoon. My second favourite fighter of all time. So powerful.

  • ermmm, they didn't really take a part in the battle of britain (thats asuming the 1940 september ending of the battle, however I know that the end of the battle of britain doesn't really have a clear finsh date as some people place it's finish in may 1941 so the typhoon just about makes it into that estimate).

  • Comment removed

  • Although very similar the typhoon and tempest were different aircraft

  • Really nice, well done.

  • Nicely put together, they more than a faily high top end. They had the best top end until the late war spits and mustangs were upgraded. It was nice to see a pic of the pilots talking tactics about the V1,most people don't realise they were the only thing that could catch up and kill a V1 without waiting for its fuel to run out. What book did you take these from?
