  • Can I use some small snippets of this in a song?

  • I find your playing absolutely fantastic. You've got some incredible equipment too... but man... Nice touch! Glad I found your vids!

    -Jazz

  • What hi hat are you using?

  • @WelcomeWakinyan I know you posted a long time ago, so sorry for responding now. I disagree with you. Jazz drummers usually have tremendous dynamics and great command of rudiments. If you think metal drumming just consists of a skank beat (snare/kick/snare/kick etc) followed by a generic run down the toms, you're wrong. Yeah anyone can do that. But great metal drumming takes a lot of practice and cannot be done by every jazz drummer. Play a combination of both. And watch some Travis Orbin.

  • Dont touch the cowbell, its too pertty!

  • Really nice, man. What kinda hats are those?

  • What is that Hi-hat?

  • whats the sticking at 0;34?

  • Very cool, tight jazz sound! Could that snare be one from finnish KUMU? It sticks out somewhat :)

  • fuckin perfect

  • I love how your snare looks and sounds. Any info I could get on what it is?

  • I HAVE to know what ride that is, please tell me! it sounds exactly like what i've been searching for

  • I dislike the sound of the ride, personally, but this is a great video. You play very well, dude.

  • Oh gosh I love Jazz beats :)

  • I come back at least every three monthes to watch this video, you're such a cool player.

  • R.I.P. Your ride cymbal, killed it. :)

  • Why does your left foot rock back and forth on the pedal? Is that something that automatically happens, or does it have some sort of function?

  • @colourfulwithaU Often times, since the hi-hat in jazz is often used on beats 2 and 4, it's just a natural motion. Your heel drops on beat 1, then you rock your foot forward to close the cymbals on beat 2, etc.

  • Love that fuckin´ Istambul!!

  • you beast

  • man i was awaiting to hear the sound of that fine looking cowbell

  • I love the sound of your snare, dude.

  • I don't get why you aren't more famous.. you are by far the best, dare I say "non-professional" drummer i've ever seen :)

  • Is that snare the Akira Jimbo Signature Series?

  • @formaset yep

  • Since that snare has a wooden rim , do you get dents on it if you were to do a rim shot?

  • dang you use a realy short stick theres noway i could use that short.

  • 1:45 what happened to the cow bell?

  • The overhead camera looks like a videogame...

  • What snare is he using?

  • @numanuma20 Yamaha Akira Jimbo

  • kit sounds great but you need some longer trousers and socks :0)

  • bass drum is 20" or 18" ?

  • i love this style drumming, i think its the funnest to play

  • your cymbals sound awesome man

  • hey man i really enjoy your playing .

i really wanna ask u how can someone expres his self in that aproach to drumming....

is that a pure imprvisation or are these "licks" u have learnt to apply.

    thanks for the inspiration....

  • @greekdrums1 I think it's really a combination - it's improvising but it's using licks and rudiments to link it all together. I find that it's best to practice "licks" etc carefully, but then when I'm actually playing I try and forget it all - just let myself go and let my muscle memory connect the dots from what I've practiced. It's not easy to explain and I guess people have different mindsets to improvisation.

  • lug snare??! who stole your lugs?

  • Is that the Istanbul turk jazz ride? If so, I have one (20") Damn good cymbal

  • Could you show us some Songo grooves... would be great :) ?

  • where did the cow bell go?:)

  • @joebalakrishnan Will Ferrell stole it.

  • Jazz drumming will and always be better then Metal drumming!

  • @WelcomeWakinyan Debatable.

  • @SlayerPJO No it is not...every Jazz drummer can play metal music but every metal drum can't play jazz music

  • @WelcomeWakinyan Derek Roddy motherfucker

  • @WelcomeWakinyan

I dare to recall. Besides arguing about metal vs jazz drummers is like comparing a potato with a screw: it's just plain stupid.

  • @WelcomeWakinyan that is completely untrue...not every jazz drummer can play metal, a lot of them wouldnt even get close. and vice versa. the two styles require such different chop styles that you cant compare them. dont be ignorant.

  • Metal in general is about speed, if it wasn't for the speed every jazz drummer would be able to play it. even like that some don't even use double pedal, so you are right. But I think Jazz and all of it's subgenres is a lot more complex than most rock, and you have to listen more and in my opinion is a lot more musical, because of the constant improvisation, you have to be constantly creating music, especially in the drums because even when ur playing the head or the arrangement u r improvising

  • u 'improvise' in metal n in many genres, but the amount of it in jazz is greater. it's harder to play drums in jazz note by note than in rock. rock is more back beated than jazz, hehe. and of what i heard there's more variety in jazz, and jazz drummers are more resourceful. maybe I need to listen to more rock, but you ppl need to listen to more jazz, especially post bebop. in general jazz is just more complex than rock. but you are right about your first statement i'm just generalizing.

  • @juanbarros88 hahaha "you people"? i play both metal and jazz, and i wouldnt categorise myself as a "metal/rock drummer" or a "jazz drummer", in the end im just a drummer, and i dont see a need to polarise. and when you talk about "most rock", thats very far from metal drumming as a style in its own right. to put it simply, could tony williams have played like derek roddy? No. and could derek roddy play like tony williams? No. its that simple.

  • @WelcomeWakinyan eh, that's not really true. I'm a jazz drummer. I went to a very well known jazz program and I make most of my living gigging. I get kind of annoyed at the elitist attitude that a lot of jazz musicians in general seem to adopt; it's true that being a good jazz musician requires a grasp on a wider amount of concepts than probably any other style. However, it doesn't mean that automatically jazz drummers can play metal. Most probably can't. I sure as hell couldn't.

  • @WelcomeWakinyan That is 100% not true

  • @WelcomeWakinyan Metal can be a very intricate and demanding style. It's a specialization on the same level as jazz.

  • @SlayerPJO Well, I love both - I just can't play metal!

  • @WelcomeWakinyan Lol, jazz drummers need to lose the ego and get a grip. Most jazz players can't play metal music, but most metal drummers can't play jazz music. Say what you want, but double bass and blast beats reaching speeds up to 300 BPM are beyond most jazz drummers. Why? They don't practice it; they don't need to. Metal drummers couldn't handle the dynamics, ostinatos, time signatures, and musicality that go into jazz drumming. Why? They don't practice it: they don't need to.

  • That Akira Jimbo snare sounds dope!

  • Very nice playing!

  • Holy mother of God, I love the way your drums sound, especially the toms. Can you post videos on tuning? Also, which cymbals are you using? Your ride is AWESOME.

  • gorgeous cymbals ... my god .... great playing as well

  • needs more cowbell

  • lol at 1:48 there is a cow bell on the bass rum and at 1:52 there isn't LOL!!! Nice job though!

  • I really like your ride. Nice playing too!

  • Hey... where'd the cowbell go? Awesome playing. Bravo!

  • hero!

    much respect!

    well dun

for how long have you been playing?

  • That cowbell is shiny as fuck

  • lovely drumming mate

  • nunca me aburroo de ver estoo! está rechilooo

  • whats the killer lick @ 0.33 its awesome!

  • @NeilAko I'm pretty sure it was a series of Six-Stroke Rolls (RLLRRL) with the high tom on the last 'L' and the cymbal + kick on the first 'R'. Hope that helps.

  • @schoolofmusiconline looks like a paradiddlediddle maybe?

  • That was some ace jazz playing, very energetic.

  • is that the akira jimbo signature snare?

  • what kind of ride cymbal is that? It sounds great!

  • @nickppp100 It's an Istanbul Traditional 22". It's been slightly modified since I got it (hand hammered to sound a little dirtier).

  • fantastic. what type of kit is this? i am looking into buying a new one and this one sounds fantastic

  • @wags155 Thanks. It's a Yamaha Maple Custom - they're out of production now (I think) but I just got a new Maple Custom Absolute which I think sounds even better. The hats are Zildjian 14" K Custom Special Dry. Cheers

  • @schoolofmusiconline Hey what is it that youre doing at 3:10

  • @kelsbannon Ah yes - that gets asked about a lot - I call it 'woody woodpecker' - search for that on our site and you'll find a demo.

  • Hey man, amazing stuff! loved the licks that you did, recognised some of them, could you help me out with the sticking at 3:11, i would really appreciate it!

  • @Bosphorus92 The bit that repeats twice at 3:11 is a 9-note sticking FRLRLRLLF (three groups of three triplets). I've actually done a short video lesson on that one - it'll be up here soon. I think you can also see it in my lesson 'how to trade drum solos'. Thanks.

  • @schoolofmusiconline ya, i actually saw that on the other video, thanks

  • This is incredible, great stuff :)

    xx Li

  • wow.
