  • Amazon sells No 9s for about 7 dollars

  • Like This If You Got That Door Bell Ringer :L:L

  • Great knives, I have about 15 of them, in various conditions and sizes. Should open the blade for your viewers' information though. Opinel is a work knife per se. It is meant to cut. The tip of the blade is somewhat brittle so you can't pry open a box or dig a hole in a piece of wood. Or yes, you may try but it might break. But, hey for 6 euros, who cares? But to cut out tent pegs, to cut open a tin can, to cut small limbs from a tree to make a fire, these are great knives!

  • I recently got myself a No 7 and a No 8. The carbon steel versions. Used one the cut some sausage in the kithen. A few hours later i decide to wash my dishes and the thing is covered in rust and spots. Looks like an antique after owning it for about a day. My first experience with a carbon steel knife. The sausages were good though.

  • @antlese Acid and fat corrode carbon steel. Make sure to wipe it thoroughly after use. The patina will stay. The older an Opinel is, the older it looks.

  • Opinels are THE common lock knife in france. They are an every day icon like Betty Crocker or Coka Cola in the U.S. The carbon steel is not meant to be the best or longest lasting. But carbon steel is easyer to sharpen on your own. They look older after some years, that's the point. And no one uses his Opinel for anything else than apples, cheese and sausages. There are better knifes. But Opinels are french lifestyle.

  • for the price opinel is allright; but as an overall knive, it´s just crap. It´s only use is to slice cheese.

  • I would put American steel on par with Japan ..German steel is still the best though

  • @76tammystanley depends what steel your talking about, its all in the heat treat

  • @76tammystanley Sweden is also famous for their steel an blacksmiths

  • dont care were its made a good knife is a good knife not all of the "best knives in the world" are american made u ever seen america make better steel then the japeneese ,or germans ???? yes we do make awesome steel and knives but were not the best in the world at all things is my point guys give credit were credit is due!!

  • its a review on an opinel folding knife- not on conflict between the americans and the french!

  • @ShadowBritt America offered to pay every country after WW2 to create a bufferzone against communist Russia and to create a healthy tradepartner of Europe (if Europe doesn't have any money, they can't buy any of the stuff you produce). This was called the "Marshallplan",it was the beginning of the cold war.America bought countries , Russia just went in with tanks.

  • I really like your reasoning behind having and using this knife--seems like a very good justification for a very unusual knife! (I almost said POU and had to rethink it...been watching too much nutnfancy. ;) )

  • @ShadowBritt

Wow what a dick. The amount of dead(and living) people you insulted in that post is incredible. America didn't win either war. It was a joint effort, and it's worth noting Russians gave the most and suffered the most in the second world war. And America's part in the first was hardly a turning point. In fact Russia also suffered the most in that war too. I hope you're not a conceited asshole now, but I'm not holding my breath. You acted very French in that post.

  • @ShadowBritt that is so true.

  • Okay, so one day it was raining and I had my No. 8 in my pocket. Now it's stuck. :P

Do you guys have a suggestion? My only other knife is an AK47 Bajonet and it's a bit bulky to bring along when camping, especially when you're camping with other people.

  • Fuck you Jeff you fucking suck at life!!!!

  • Check out Opiknife.com

  • where can you buy it?

  • i love it.

  • Is there blade play

  • Stainless is better for fungi collectors ^^ Cheap but well made knives. Just like Mora.

  • I have one and when I went camping with it the wood on it swelled and I couldn't open it so just to warn anyone

  • I never heard about anyone who didn't regret calling a French Foreign Legion soldier a coward in his face.

  • @Angyal269 show me your french foreign legion, i show you delta who laughs.

  • @Angyal269 TRUTH, FRENCH FRY

  • I have the No9 carbon steel version. Best single blade utility folder I ever come across.

  • hahaha i have the same clock

  • Its an amazing knife i have 10c and 8c i use 10 for heavier cutings but all time i have with me opinel 8 because its nice light and do not scare people its rather make them laugh but when there is no need for heavier blade i use mine 8;) its goo nice knife

  • what up with the door bell? haha

  • @ShadowBritt I'm french, and I know that we have a really bad government.

But you just don't have to say that thing about the WWII, I lost some person of my familly in this war, and I will ALWAYS have respect for the americans who liberate my country. If i don't speak german today it's because there were here to sacrify their lives for freedom.I will remember this all the time.

So stop talking shit on us, it's not because we have a stupid government that we don't have a memory.........

  • @seb2567 if anybody knows history, it is really stupid this hatred between france and america, americans hate french because we think they are weak, cowards, who think themselves to be the best in the world(lol), and im sure the french hate americans because we are bullies, and so "arrogant" of our things, but in reality, america wouldnt exist w.o french help in the revolution, and france wouldnt exist w.o america in ww2. america is the fat friend, france is the tiny friend, we should be buds!

  • @ShadowBritt I'm french, and I know that we have a really bad government.

But you just don't have to say that thing about the WWII, I lost some person of my familly in this war, and I will ALWAYS have respect for the americans who liberate my country. • I used my stainless Opinel number 8 today grafting apple and pear trees in my orchard. 'Great work knife' is right-and cheap, 'the gardener's favourite'. Takes a fearful edge.

Some of my Opinels have 'exotic' wood handles like olive and walnut, I also have a few in different blade shapes incuding a curved blade for pruning and a long thin flexible blade for filleting fish.

faults are-may not close or open well when wet, pointy tip can snap easily. Great knives.

  • @ShadowBritt I worked for a French corp for several years. I don't like them at all. They openly discriminate against non-French people, and they have a deep rooted dislike of Anglo-Saxon people or those whose native language is English. This attitude might have originated from their defeat in the war against England. The English and Spaniards have had their chances of being a European superpower, but the French never did.

  • For some reason I've alway reserved my Opinel as my outdoors food prep and eatin' knife. I'm sure it's good at other things, but something about it, has made it a niche knife for me.

  • why dose the door ring in like all your vids

  • popular guy clearly... dont be rude

  • @bushcraftourway aint being rude just asking coz why would your door ring like as soon as you start filming on like loads of vids

  • haha ya popular

  • I'm guessing drug dealer.

  • @50cliber ITS ALL THE BITCHES COMIN TO JEFFS TO CHECK OUT THE SWEET BLADES BABY, WEWT

  • Opinel is defiantly one of my favorite knife brands.

They are cheap, classy, well built and practical.

  • i asked you to do an opinel review but i see now that you have done one. sorry :)

  • i just ordered an opinel number 6

  • I laughed when I saw how everyone was having a piss fight on here XD. "Its like watching a bunch of retards trying to hump a doorknob out there!" Nice knife though, I like the lock.

  • I tryed to find one and i find a lot but i didnt find one with the wilderness etchings.

  • OI french guy it wuldnt be called a pie hole if we werent supposed to put pies in it, therefore yur an idiot ITS NOT A FROG LEGS OR CAVIAR HOLE, and art pfft mate im an artist meself tattooist for the win now go bang a french woman whos hairy enuff to resemble chewbacca

  • woo my opinel no.8 arrived today, great knife

  • i honestly don't get the hate in this world, why doesn't every one just get along, and not make up fucking nicknames for other countries, we are americans, not yanks. you don't see me going around youtube calling britains, limey bastards. I'm sorry if i offended anybody but the point I'm making is that to leave the racist crap in your head, not on this guys vids.

  • Hi, @Supergundum just passing through, as I like to see the review vid's, have to say your comment on the 'Hate' & Country vs Country etc etc is absolutely right. Not a single Country, Nation, Race Colour Creed - whatever, There is nowhere free from some 'divvy schmuck', wanting to make waves. We all laugh, cry, bleed - - - one day we will all realise we all need each other eh.

  • I have bought exactly the same today in The Netherlands. Exactly.

  • Thing is, the French figure that as they did ALL of the fighting in your "revolutionary War" and freed you from the Pommies, they've more than earned your fighting one war for them. (I hope you won't have the cheek to count the WWI. You arrived like 10 minutes before it ended). Ponder this a bit, if it hadn't been for the frogs, you'd still be sing "God Save the Queen" (may be that's what you Yanks resent)

  • They only did any fighting in the last 2 years of the war, and they weren't helping us, they were getting even with you.

  • @Cameron1942 ROFL dood french showed up late and fired shots from the cannons of there ships, and they did all the fighting? listen fuck boy, you grab 20 of your best civilians we grab 20 of ours at the end of the day we will have 25 cuz we fucked you, and then we fucked your women,, i was in favor of french american relations, now i laugh at your "HU HU, JE VOUDRAIS CHEESE AND WINE" btw, coffee shops for pussies. oh what do you call them?, cafeeees, hey guys.....you wanna go to the cafeeee?

  • @Wyndstarthedruid lol.true.

  • Boker makes "opinel" knives (under $10)

  • Stupid sharp knife, altho the loking mechanism has ALOT to be desired. And with it being VERY high carbon steel , when i showed it a little water, it did what the french are famouse for......it gave up. Supa

  • no shit sherlock, of course a high carbon steel blades going to oxidise if you dont dry it...

  • didnt know about the anti terrorism funding, interesting...

  • That's because it never happened.

  • Talk about perfect timing with the clock ehh?

  • I just bought a number eight and I use it as a good general utility knife. I can let myself really thump on it because its both value priced, and its made as a work knife.

I need to get another couple to keep in my car.

  • Not in any way trying to attack you here, but is there any particular reason why you didn't mention it's French?

I ask because for some reason the French don't have a very high reputation amongst many Americans. Sort of a running joke. Never got that.

The French army aparently get these issued as standard. Great French knife. Nice little review. I like how you mention the carbon steel types in the cutting test. Kind of added to this review.

  • I have nothgin against the French infact I have a few good online friends from France, and some of the best balisong flippers I know are French, lol but I think the general thign americans have against the French is they never fight in any wars, and never get involved to help anyone...and from what I heard in France they hate Americans for their own reasons...? But I dont know...

  • I guess you are oversimplifying things. NOBODY likes Yanks anywhere! May be you ought to stop "helping" countries and people would change their minds.

  • and you as a frenchman are talking shit, you guys have never contributed anything to this world, you gave the usa teh statue of liberty yea woohoo, we could have made it ourselfve's, you gave the soldiers in ww2 the chatea, the worst known gun in the world, the french or worthless and have never contributed to this world.

  • Spoken as a true ignorant Yank! I am not French. You should learn from them... At least how to eat decent food, not the swill you stuff your pieholes with... I won't mention art to you, you probably don't know what that is, being a bloody ignorant Yank!

  • one, who give's a flying fuck about art, 2 every american doesn't eat the shit you see in movie's, you ignorant moron, and french people eat the shit part of all animals, livers, fish eggs, snails. plus america is the land of women who shave their legs and arm pits.

  • what append to the knife?

  • By saying you don't like us, your saying you don't like your own kind. The US is comprised of descendants of your great x 20 grand parents. 150 years ago, you wouldn't be talking because there would be people very closely related to you. Now your pissed because you ended up stuck in france and I am in the USA. and by hating a whole group of people, you are 1.) racist, 2.) ignorant, and 3.)generalizing, 4.) just dumb.

Great video Jeff. Opinel knives are great for the price.

  • Spoken like a true dumb Yank!! I'm 8.000 miles from France and have no French Ancestors.

I am a racist but I'm not ignorant, I'm well read and lastly, I confess to being ignorant in certain matters, but never as ignorant as a dumb Yank!!

  • BTW I would much rather live in France than in the cesspool you call usa

  • Is'nt argentina a third world country, what do you make a year like $20,don't you still have a tin roof house.Even our poor in America is richer than the richest man in Argentina.

  • Well said

  • Thanks friend. I see you like rugger and so do I.

  • That's funny, considering "dumb yanks" have a good chance at being from your country or near it. And you are just an ignorant jackass who has never seen the US or its people.

  • Just because you don't, doesn't mean that nobody does. Stupid British bastard.

  • @Cameron1942 what

  • @cutlerylover The french helped build the USA by fighting against the British during the american revolution, then you have WW1 and WW2, the first Irak war in 1991 and since 2003 the french forces are fighting in Afghanistan with their fellow US soldiers. They get involved a lot in most african countries to bring piece.

France is the oldest ally of the US.After the 9/11 attacks, the day after the french president was the first head of state to visit to offer his help.

  • @cutlerylover america might of lost the war of independance without france, and france actually has the best millitary record in europe, this is comming from a brit.

  • @2010blackhawkdown LMAO the french have the best military record because they dont fight anyone...they are comically known to stay away from confrontation...

  • @cutlerylover no ur missunderstanding my comment, best millitary record as in most victories, that is until they fight the british,

  • @2010blackhawkdown noooo you missed my point I know what you saiud my reply was if you hardly fight your going to have a good record...lol if they fought 3 tiems and won twice thats great! but if another country fought 100 times and lost67 times they woudl not have as good of a record as them even though they won 65 times more than france...

  • @cutlerylover if they never fight anyone how could they have more victories than the rest of europe?

  • @2010blackhawkdown thats my point, you said they have a better record, which is irrelevant considering they dont fight often at all...lets put this in other terms....we got a bag of apples we both want to share them you eat 30 I eat 1, then you puke...I say I am better at eating apples since I didnt puke, I have a better record of not puking, but how is that fair? its not, although its fact...more confused now?

  • @cutlerylover france has been involved in every major conflict in europe, its just a common misconception that they never fight, french troops are currently deployed in the ivory coast following the recent conflict there, france is more active in the libya intervention than the US,

  • @2010blackhawkdown I dont know much about small evens, Im going by major wars WW1, WWII Etc...

  • @cutlerylover small events? just because america isnt contributing much to a conflict doesnt make it small

  • @2010blackhawkdown Im going by overall impact on the world and numbers, a small conflict to me is a few thousand peopel involved and the outcome only effecting those who are involved...

  • @cutlerylover any war only effects the people who are involved, how is the libyan war effecting sweeden, or indonesia

  • @2010blackhawkdown when countries fight and the outcome effects the world trade it effect people not involved or fighting

  • @cutlerylover

small events? does the name Napoleon ring a bell? :) speaking of history, you have much to take up i guess....

    the vid is cool though.....

  • @schumifanaat I personally do because French people have been ignorant to me.I know you were talkinvg to Jeff just saying

  • hey man use a number 13 it's so cool but the carbon steel it's so nice realy and you sharpen whith a stone in the forest or on the field it's so easy and very most popular in france !!!!

  • dont be fooled by the price...carbon steel will cut throught flesh like butter

  • I carried one of these for ages and they are pretty nice. I had the same size but in carbon steel... mine did not lock closed which is why I eventually stopped carrying it. Interesting you had a question comparing it to a Mora as I consider it the equivalent of a folding Mora (minus the Scandi grind, obviously). Think I will have to pick up a new one!

  • once open there is no resistance besides the bolster, unlike a slip there is no backspring to klep preassure open...

  • @cutlerylover

    Wait...Do you live in Japan?

  • I have NR. 6 from france, i think i've bought it about 6 years ago maybe a lil more maybe lil less. ant it has this gray thing like ur black knife (in ur new vid January 2009) does that mean it's carbon steal?

  • there hand made.

  • I'm getting mine Friday!!!!

  • ive got mine now!!! no.6!

  • cool

    how long in the blade

  • I say you should get one of these knifes the are really light and fast,I got one 2day..it's a really good knife, its not cheap crap trust me

  • thanks im getting one tomorrow hopefully

  • lol clock!

  • i was thinking about getting one of them, i can get one for £3.99 in an army surplus store. great vid 5/5!

  • so this compared to the mora which 1 performs better

  • The Mora because of its scandinavian grind, but its hard to compare folders with fixed blades, fixed blades usually win if the quality and materails are similar...ficed blades dont have any locksa to fail so they are even safer but that beign said it coems at a price, fixed blades are usually harder to carry...

  • well thanks alot i think ill go with your choice your so very helpful =]

  • Good to hear Im glad you enjoyed the video!

  • thers the clock again =p

  • oh yeah, ahaha...

  • One last thing... the wooden handles swell and contract hugely if they get wet. This can make the knife VERY hard to open. Hitting it on a rock/table can jerk the blade open in that case.

A good long term solution is that, when it's dry and easy to open and close, coat the handle in oil-- even olive oil, etc, will work in a pinch. It will soak in and because oil and water don't mix, it will form a protective layer stopping the handle from taking on water and swelling when it gets wet.

  • Your right, I have read that on the forums a few times, thats a good tip...

  • As for the general usability of the knife, apart from them being able to get razor sharp, they are great all around tools. Weapons, maybe not... but to be honest, how many people will ever in their lives use a folding knife as a weapon? If you're planning on fighting, get a switchblade.

The blades wear down over time, and the handles can crack or swell (another comment on that later, stupid size limit). However, with proper care these are wonderful knives and cheap to replace when they wear out.

  • I agree, except for a self defense knife, your best bet is a small fixed blade...

  • The carbon/soft steel versions of these knives sharpen up like nothing else. You have to use your own sharpening stone to change the bevel/angle of the edge.

With the edge touching the stone, the back "ridge" or side of the blade will be about as high off the stone as it is thick. That's the angle I use for the #8 at least. Sharpen alternating sides regularly, with each side held at that level. This angle allows extreme sharpness with decent edge retention.

  • lol @ 46 sec.

  • lol, wait until you see one of ym new vids where I am in my room and my cuckoo clock goes off, of course I show it, lol...

  • just got my self one love it

  • Cool, Im glad you got one to try out!

  • looks like a nice knife i love the wooden handle

  • Yeah, its a classy looking knife!

  • this knife is crap and i dont like it

  • Your entitled to your own opinion, not everyone will like every knife...But that does not make it crap...saying this knife is crap is an opinion...Please give examples next time you make such a bold statement...

  • i dont like it coz of long opening/blocking and not solidity. I like half-auto knifes like kershaw with speedsafe or robo assisted camillus coz those can be EDC and usefull in combat too.

This can be only placed in shelf as collection

  • Ifd you check out knifeforums or bladeforums you will find that there are hundreds of people who buy these pinles and use them hard, in some cases just as hard as any kershaw...I understand what your trying to say, and yes there are mnay other knives that are much better than these opinel foldrs, but that still does not make these crappy...For example, you like kershas...

  • So do I, but someone might say that they are complete crap and that microtech knives are much better and more usefull...Woudl that be true, well its part truth and part opinion...But when you start to spend more money you tend to gte better knives...You have to think about price here, what other $10 knife of a similar design can perform as good as an opinel? See what I mean...I understand ehat your saying, I am just trying to give you a different perspective on it, thats all...

  • ps, sorry for any typos...

  • After viewing several of your videos I am wondering about that electronic chime that clock makes. Is it an hourly chime or quarter-hour? What is it exactly? Great vids........

  • Thanks! Yeah someone else mentioned it too, it is my house clock, it chimes every 15 minutes, then on the hour chimes for each tiem for whatever hour it is, at 4 oclock it chimes 4 times and so on...I try to time it so my videos don't have it going off, but between restartign because of the dogs barking or other backround noises I usually have it in the backround anyway, lol...

  • I have used Opinels for 20 years or so, the number 8 and 10 are very useful general purpose gardening, fishing and general outdoor knives, there is a folding fish filleting stainless version.

I just posted a video of me using my number 6 stainless Opinel for grafting an apple tree, it's the perfect knife for this job, check out Fruitwise + grafting. Great knives.

  • Ok cool, Ill check out the vid!

  • Opinels rule!

I've got a #12 & #9 in carbon. The 12 is over 20 yrs old and still going strong. I can get them razor sharp with very little effort.

I also got a stainless #6 to try , which turned out much better than I thought .

  • Yeah, they really are a good value knife! a good example of a decent knife that wont clean out your wallet...

  • I just bought a carbon no. 12.

I was just looking for the meanest, biggest thing on the market (for a reasonable price of course) and I think I might have found it ;)

love your video's by the way

  • Very nice, a #12 is a big one,a nd the carbon blade will treat you very well if you treat it well back, hahahaha, and thanks!

  • just because its stainless steel it dosent meen it wont rust dude

  • I know that, in another video I explain stainless to be exactly that, "stain-less" I know stainless will rust but it takes a bit more to do so...I keep the knife in my bag in a plastic zipbag so no moisture or condisation can get to it, or very little at least, its not a knife I use often, just there as a backup folder...But thanks for trying to let me know that, I appreciate the heads up anyway...

  • I have a No.5 (non-locking because of UK EDC laws), and you've just inspired me to start carrying it again. Great little knives, and very NKP friendly.

  • Very cool! These Opinels, all of them, really are pretty cool knives for the money!

  • the great advantage of opinel knives is that you dont have to sharpen them... The blade isnt stainless... so it will rust... when you clean of the rust with a towel it sharpens the blade... i have mine for about 7 years.. its still sharp like on the first day... and theres no rust on the blade.. (i clean it after i have used it..) Im with the boyscouts and almost everyone has a opinel knife...

    greetings

  • Okay, I don't normally see Opinels in outdoor outlets, but you never know...You generally see knives from Buck, sometiems Kershaw, and Gerber...but good luck anyway, if you can't find one in a store you can always order them online, I got mine from smokey mountain knife works, they ship everywhere, and shipping is reasonable...I usualy don't order unless I have a few items I want, that way the shippign cost does't matter much then...but on one item it might be too much all together...

  • Hmmmm, good question, the blade on the SAK (swiss army knife) is very similar to the Opinel in that they are both pretty thin, and both flat ground...Very hard to say what I like better, they both perfom about the same, GREAT slicers! The opinel obviously has the size advantage, but the victorinox has the extra tools in it...If I had to pick I woudl go with the SAK, only because its more funtional and in a smaller package with extra goodies...

  • I grab the opinel when I need a longer blade...So whats better depends on the cutting you would need them for...Thats a tough question, lol, I never thought about comparing the two of them before...I can tell you this...I ALWAYS have a SAK of some kind on me, but not always an opinel...

  • I would also like to add that blade style does not matter much, unless you prefer a smaller tip for stabbing or punturing, where the Opinel would be better than the average SAK...
