The 4830 outperforms the 5830, but barely and solely because of drivers. The ATI 4000 series cards have very stable drivers. The 5000 aren't up to par. But the ATI Catalyst 10.3 update will give the 5830 an average of 10 fps over the 4830. Also the 5830 supports the new DX11 graphics api and gives better battery performance.
What are you talking about? I already have ATI. My PC has a 4850 X2 running smoothly and maxing out everything. Got a 9800GT as my dedicated Physx card.
nope, try to check on custom laptop such as notebook guru, kobalt, deviltech or malibal. They are way better than alienware m17x! Better specs for the same size, but as always; they all battery eater. All DTR are like that.
i would probably choose the envy, it has great performance, and up to like 6 hours of batteri life.
The only minus the envy has from being a perfect laptop, is the disk drive. It can only use external disc drives, so if you plan using discs on the go, go for the alienware.
(personally, i almost never use discs, because all games, movies and other stuff are pirated, so you don't need a disc drive.)
well it really depends what u want... this is a laptop designed for being a desktop replacement and for being mobile... but the alienware is more of a hardcore gaming machines... I'd get this one
THis is my next laptop. If your a college student you get a discount for the Envy 15 @ about $1200. I was gonna get a MBP 15 but damn. Those specs for $1200 can't be matched.
I just ordered this laptop after reading a number of reviews and watching a few youtube videos. My choices were limited as far as what I was looking for - Fast, slim and able to support 8GB or more of memory.
Yes its just a lot of HP software on the laptop. Its not all bad though. So far I'm happy with the laptop. I am going to run 3DMark on the weekend and measure heat under some real load. I will post whatever the results are.
can't hear a thing.. and y is there no explosion effects on crysis? i wanna see the particle effects, blurs and glows all at the same time.. and the movie HD is a trailer.. that means the file wasn't very big right? no full movies? testing it on the jump to scene responsiveness.. but the machine itself is a beauty..
no i mean i just wanna know it's performance while handling massive explosions and stuff.. most pc's run smooth on light scenes but then sumtimes it lags when huge explosions (or any heavy war sequences) shows.. like when the guy threw that smoke bomb, i was expecting a frag grenade blowing up the insides of that house.. i wanna see how the Envy performs.. i mean i'm just curious that's all.. no biggie..
@mcdudly00 idk, but if they make a 17" version with a blu ray and a battery that lasts at least 6 hours, I'm buying. Until that, I'm looking at a dv7t quad eddition.
Yes, but I would have MUCH rather had one of the best internal drives ive seen though, that's what bugs me. The standard is internal, and the only notebooks that can get arround it are called "net books". A internal drive wouldve made this 10x better, and a 6ish hour batter would have made it the best laptop ever. But, nope. Sticking with my dv7t qe
On that note I would also like to add that they could (seeing how it's obvious competitor has a 17" version) make a Envy 17 that would probably alot enough space for a supermulti blu-ray drive.
We've played several game titles including Crysis. The notebook runs unusually cool for playing games like these demanding titles compared to other notebooks we've used.
If you read our full review on mobiletechreview, you will find we detailed the temp numbers for various tasks.
If you're looking for bang for your buck stay as far away from the envy as you can. They are luxury product. And their price:performance ratio is even worse than Macbooks. If you have unlimited money however you can't get any better (well actually you can get faster gaming lappies but not as portable).
@ipbalkenende So you've used one then? Curious to see where your info is coming from. Please also post some similar Macbook benchmarks to backup your statements.
it would be great if u could run some more games like prototype.... street fighter 4.... gta 4.... modern warfare.... left 4 dead.... just to know little bit more about graphic card....... can u compare ati 4830 with nvidia 260m?????

I am running Win7 Home (Fully patched with all security updates including drivers, etc..)

3D Mark Score P4098
GPU Score: 3422
CPU Score: 10065
CPU Heat peaked at 80C - Fans noise wasn't bad at all. I am not using this laptop for gaming but for customer demos and extensive use of VMware.

I just got my envy and so far so good. The laptop does run hot just running normal tasks and gets hotter when pounding it.
Under normal usage (email, watching youtube, surfing the net)
System Temp: 54 C
HDD: 41 C
I will run 3D Mark on it and see what happens.
The power brick is at least 1/3 larger than the HP6210 brick.
A lot of HP bloat on the laptop.
