A gun system is all fine and dandy, but we are talking about a combined-arms unit here. The vehicle in itself is worthless on the battlefield unless it carries with it a force of soldiers who can be dismounted to provide the actual firepower dominance over the battlefield. Getting your men into an advantegous firing position should be an APC's top priority. Defence is thus more important for a "battle taxi" than firepower...

I thought "scorpion" tanks were CVT vehicles with the old 76mm...Our troops deserve stabilised, belt fed 30mm equipped tracked AFV's, like the Americans have. That sort of reprisal technique is exactly the thing that turned almost the entire population of Afghanistan against the Soviets during the 80's and their subsequent expulsion from the country as they realized that now they'd either have to kill EVERYONE, or leave. A 30mm cannon is an anti-armor weapon.  It's a bullet over an inch wide and it doesn't have the rate of fire to use against infantry. 50cal is in a different class.

Only against light-to-mediumweight armor that hasn't placed anti-autocannon armor layering on. Our problem is enemy "infantry" is hiding behind thick mud walls .50 cal can't penetrate.

Any weapon has specific ideal uses and scenarios of weakness. My point still stands this weapon is in a different class from a .50. Nothing about its weight, ROF, or expense of ammunition makes it a possible standard-issue anti-personnel weapon.

You miss the point with your excuse-itis. The .50 cal HMG is BASELINE VEHICLE ARMAMENT that is NOT GETTING THE JOB DONE. The baseline U.S. vehicle armament has to deliver punch we cannot get from our backs--30mm HE autocannon should be the standard.

Once again, any weapon can be used in certain scenarios very well. The .50cal performs extremely well in most situations against infantry. The .50cal is relatively inexpensive and much lighter than a 30mm cannon. You could not put this weapon on a hummer, for instance.

Actually you CAN put the ASP-30 on the Humvee truck; the point is YOU SHOULDN'T USE HUMVEES OR ANY TRUCKS AT ALL in war. The .50 cal is NOT working in MOST situations in Afghanistan. Where are the HE .50 cal bullets? Supply system can't deliver them. We need to go to 30mm and get job done.

On a side note, if you change the payload, this weapon can penetrate any modern tank armor with a direct hit. 30mm is the same round used by the rotary guns on A-10s. Obviously this vehicle will probably not get outfitted with depleted-Uranium rounds, but it's still fun to speculate. :)

Cover hard enough to resist .50BMG has to be so rare that that alone can't be a justification of deploying the much more expensive + hard to use 30mm auto cannon.

Also, wouldn't a light 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher like the Mk19Mod3 be more suited if more powerful rounds are required?

The 30mm HE round is about equal to a hand grenade. So a spray would be like chucking dozens if not hundreds of grenades at the enemy infantry. The Apache and A-10 also use the 30mm and neither has problems with infantry.

I recall hearing somewhere that it's derived from the M230 used on the AH-64 Apache, but my memory is a little fuzzy on that.

One thing I CAN tell you for certain, is that the ASP-30 fires the same ammunition as the M230, so it has one hell of a punch for it's size.

People know what the M113 is good at & bad at. It's cheap. We got lots. They can be modified easily. Perfect support weapon for the 82nd & 101st Air. Yeah, it ain't invulnerable. But it can go offroad and ford rivers. Strykers are restricted to roads, which, my friends, are basically kill zones.

Anything that you feel is "bad" with a M113 Gavin can be upgraded to the point where its BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE; if you want 60+ mph road speeds put band tracks on and add more power.
