A gun system is all fine and dandy, but we are talking about a combined-arms unit here. The vehicle in itself is worthless on the battlefield unless it carries with it a force of soldiers who can be dismounted to provide the actual firepower dominance over the battlefield. Getting your men into an advantegous firing position should be an APC's top priority. Defence is thus more important for a "battle taxi" than firepower...
I thought "scorpion" tanks were CVT vehicles with the old 76mm...Our troops deserve stabilised, belt fed 30mm equipped tracked AFV's, like the Americans have. We also would like 7.62x51 caliber assault rifles, as 5.56 doesnt cut it in the open. The best army deserves the best kit. The British army.
@MrIwantmyownname He means the best skilled and the best trained. The British Army might not be the most technologically advanced but hell we can give it some.
That sort of reprisal technique is exactly the thing that turned almost the entire population of Afghanistan against the Soviets during the 80's and their subsequent expulsion from the country as they realized that now they'd either have to kill EVERYONE, or leave. The problem being the price of killing everyone would have severely depleted the entire Red Army.
Lets stick with hearts and minds before collecting balls. It's smarter.
We're NOT advocating reprisals with a 30mm cannon that can take-out VERIFIED targets. When you can't beat the enemy on the ground with wimpy KE that's when AIR STRIKES are called in that kill innocent civilians.
A 30mm cannon is an anti-armor weapon. It's a bullet over an inch wide and it doesn't have the rate of fire to use against infantry. 50cal is in a different class.
Only against light-to-mediumweight armor that hasn't placed anti-autocannon armor layering on. Our problem is enemy "infantry" is hiding behind thick mud walls .50 cal can't penetrate.
Any weapon has specific ideal uses and scenarios of weakness. My point still stands this weapon is in a different class from a .50. Nothing about its weight, ROF, or expense of ammunition makes it a possible standard-issue anti-personnel weapon.
You miss the point with your excuse-itis. The .50 cal HMG is BASELINE VEHICLE ARMAMENT that is NOT GETTING THE JOB DONE. The baseline U.S. vehicle armament has to deliver punch we cannot get from our backs--30mm HE autocannon should be the standard.
Once again, any weapon can be used in certain scenarios very well. The .50cal performs extremely well in most situations against infantry. The .50cal is relatively inexpensive and much lighter than a 30mm cannon. You could not put this weapon on a hummer, for instance.
Actually you CAN put the ASP-30 on the Humvee truck; the point is YOU SHOULDN'T USE HUMVEES OR ANY TRUCKS AT ALL in war. The .50 cal is NOT working in MOST situations in Afghanistan. Where are the HE .50 cal bullets? Supply system can't deliver them. We need to go to 30mm and get job done.
On a side note, if you change the payload, this weapon can penetrate any modern tank armor with a direct hit. 30mm is the same round used by the rotary guns on A-10s. Obviously this vehicle will probably not get outfitted with depleted-Uranium rounds, but it's still fun to speculate. :)
How thick are those mud walls that they can completely resist 50 cal rounds?
Cover hard enough to resist .50BMG has to be so rare that that alone can't be a justification of deploying the much more expensive + hard to use 30mm auto cannon.
Also, wouldn't a light 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher like the Mk19Mod3 be more suited if more powerful rounds are required?
Isn't that what is ACTUALLY being deployed right now?
We are out-gunned in AFPAK because our KE bullets are being absorbed into thick Afghan mud walls and surrounding rocks. Thick mud walls are COMMON in Afghan villages and cities. Open your eyes.
The 30mm HE round is about equal to a hand grenade. So a spray would be like chucking dozens if not hundreds of grenades at the enemy infantry. The Apache and A-10 also use the 30mm and neither has problems with infantry.
Dear dynamic para, I'm watching all your video and reading your very interestings theories, but what do you think about the french 1er Regiment de Hussards Parachutistes (1st airborn hussard regiment), this the light cavakery rgt of the french airborn brigade. They have in each company 3 light tank Panhard ERC 90sagaie and 3 Panhard VBL with Milan?
Ha Ha. Its from a VHS video TAPE and every time you play a tape it degrades in quality. I'm sorry I wasn't able to offer this video without quality step-down, but its the CONTENT of the video that counts: a gas-operated 30mm HE shell-shooting autocannon that can be fitted where only KE bullet machine guns are now...
Haha no sweat. Looks exactly as crappy as our Swedish Bofors videos. Cheesy synth music with graphics straight from the early 90s. Top that with strained broken english and voila. Millions in the bank. :)
When it comes to video quality, you can worry about that. Americans will take of the quality that matters, sunshine....and it ain't video. Leave that to the Japanese. Understand? Tu comprende? Capire? Verstehen?
"I was a 19D Scout for 11 years, the first six on 113s, then the piece of s**t Brads. For Scouts, it couldn't get worse than the Bradley....too big, too heavy, too loud, too complex, and too slow to keep up with the M1s it's supposed to support. A 113A3 runs rings around it, the only advantage a Brad has is firepower, but if you're a bigger target than a tank without the armor to take hits like a tank, a Brad's firepower doesn't mean a thing."
I was 19D as well and I always marveled at how quiet the Mortar Plt's 113s were. Bradleys belch a lot of smoke and can be heard way before they show up...
On the other hand, a lot of Scouts swear by the Bradley, so who knows? I was a HMMWV man myself, quick and easy.
Now imagine M113 Gavins with electric drive and band tracks covered by visual and infared camouflage....far better than any other vehicle in mobility, firepower and protection...quickest, toughest, stealthiest...
Now here's a weapon that the troops could use on the ground about now!
And just to show how far behind the times the US military actually is, Norway and Canada have already built and fielded M113 Gavin derivatives with Autocannon armament --- about THIRTY YEARS AGO!!!
People know what the M113 is good at & bad at. It's cheap. We got lots. They can be modified easily. Perfect support weapon for the 82nd & 101st Air. Yeah, it ain't invulnerable. But it can go offroad and ford rivers. Strykers are restricted to roads, which, my friends, are basically kill zones.
Anything that you feel is "bad" with a M113 Gavin can be upgraded to the point where its BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE; if you want 60+ mph road speeds put band tracks on and add more power. There's NOTHING wheels can do that tracks cannot do better, and a lot of things tracks can do that wheels can't do AT ALL.
tracks cant be light, theres one thing. and if youre talking about using lighter metals its either going to be weaker or waaaaaay more expensive for light strong metals.
the breathrough to fully enclosed an infantry squad is to make hull out of aluminum alloy, what you do with armor layers after making this bullet-proof box holding running gear is up to you to defeat threats
i agree id rather be in this thing then a stryker anyday, just like id rather be in a stryker then a hummer. Personally Id tell them to fuck off if I had less then a Bradley lol.
Video's a bit washed out, but a good demonstration of a much more capable weapon system on a much more capable platform then anything offered by M1126 Stryker ICV.

Is that the same gun as the Apache's cannon?
mtnbiker040 2 years ago
mtnbiker040,
I recall hearing somewhere that it's derived from the M230 used on the AH-64 Apache, but my memory is a little fuzzy on that.
One thing I CAN tell you for certain, is that the ASP-30 fires the same ammunition as the M230, so it has one hell of a punch for it's size.
BlacktailFA 2 years ago
The gun itself is different(lighter) but it fires the same round.
