  • Loving the background argume

  • Can you re-use ferrofluid?

  • T-9000 :D

  • Looking at that stuff grosses me out! Sometimes, I actually have to squint my eyes to look at it. Thumbs up if this applies to you.

  • World of Goo. I finally solved it.

  • when we said ferrofluid we mean black mercury ???

  • i want some in my pool!!

  • omg its Venom its a symbiote

  • SInce it gets attracted to magnets, u could also try using a speaker/headset and watch the fluid dance to the tune...just a suggestion...

  • isn't ferrofluid used in thermometers too?

  • @TheQueenofdasouth no it is not mercury, it will nor expand, orcontract in heat, it is just extremely fine magnetic dust in a liquid that holds it,

  • I've learnd how to make it non stick to sides of glass: first You have to use fiew drops of glycerol and cover iwth it surfice of glass, then use alkohol (about 60%) that's it : ) then it's working great!

  • the Fe3O4 is suspended in a nonpolar carrier (when i do it, it's in kerosene) but it's reacted with a surfactant (i use oleic acid) and the surfactant keeps it from settling, it makes it into a colloid.

the water is polar and the carrier is non polar so they are not miscible, meaning they don't mix. that is the explanation of what is going on there.

if you're getting it stuck to the sides, maybe use a synthesis of ferrofluid that has a different carrier? might work, i don't know

  • DOES ANYONE KNOWS WHAT KIND OF LIQUID IS INSIDE EXEPT FERROFLUID? WHY IT DOESN'T STICK TO THIS GLASS???? WHY???? I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE !!

  • @extream12345 You can use Windex apparently ^^

  • Ferrofluid is harmless as long as you don't eat it, for the most common way to create it is vegetable oil and black toner.

  • HEHE!!!!

  • whats that a condom ??

    !!

  • @getfunky79 ur a moron

  • whats the other liquid next to the ferrofluid?? i mean even the ferrofluid is reacting different...

  • anyone else hear a charger from L4D2 in the back round at 0:05 ???

  • hmm... ok

  • Why the ferrofluid doesn't soak the tube??

  • It's apparently suspended in alchohol- it's in some kind of liquid, and it's obviously not water.

  • @Rubashkyn

ya i wondered the same, maybe its just a really pure sample of ferro

  • Is this a vacuum tube, or will any sealed tube do fine?

  • that fluid looks like the stuff from "venom" of spiderman :D

  • cool, thanx

  • is it possible to buy ferrofluid?

how can I make it at home?

  • you can buy it, it's not madly expensive. as soon as i seen it i found out how to buy it within 5 minutes of watching the video, google is your friend,

  • @MADEINMAIDEN just use ink toner and vegetable oil

  • а какая практическая польза от этого жидкого ферромагнетика?

  • @ivanvasilich74 В промышленности в качестве смазки и т.п.

  • We made some of this in our engineering chem lab today. Ours was a little thick, though, so it didn't react as well. :(

  • No, ferro fluid will not kill you if it touches your skin. No mercury is involved. Made of magnetite, and an oil solvent. Harmless, unless you ingest it.

  • @diablosniper isnt magnetite a pokemon?

  • @walruscoocoocachu26 magnemite. gosh.

  • you'll likely suffer some metal poisoning, iron? idk whatever the ferrofluid is made out of. Think like mercury.

  • Quick question: What liquid/oil did you use with the ferrofluid inside the tube? I tried water but the sides get coated in the fluid and you can't see anything. I want to put my ferrofluid in a test tube down the center of a toroidal coil and send AC signals to it through the coil and see what happens at different Frequencies

  • @ratulloch1 Ive seen people use Windex

  • @ratulloch1 did you find out what the clear liquid in the test tube was?

  • @inductionloop nope never found out what the clear liquid was

  • @inductionloop nope but it may be rubbing alcohol...I tried it but the rubbing alcohol destroys the mixture after a couple of days

  • @ratulloch1 You can use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, Windex, or distilled water. Tap water tends to mix with the ferrofluid's oil.

  • Quick question: What oil did you use with the ferrofluid inside the tube? so it didn't stick to the sides?

  • i wonder how it would feel like to jump into a pool full of that while its on its spikes form

  • where did u get that? :( i need 1 cuz i hace to do a work

  • were did you get ferrofluid

  • Is that in a container of water?

  • no, it's just air, not water. It would even work in vacuum.

  • ah. Thats cool. It acted like it was in water though, which is why I asked.

  • can you touch this without any poisens or the likes? how can you make it ? can you make it out of house held items?

  • it feels like oil and when it has the magnet close up it feels like oil

  • The Container they use in this video is an old filter casing for the high quality water filters like McDonalds uses.

  • Quick question: What oil did you use with the ferrovluid inside the tube? I've heard that some mineral oils with densities too different from the ferrofluid will oxide the iron much like water would. I've tried acquiring the necessary components to preserve- and play with ferrofluid at the same time (like you do in this video) but I've had no luck in getting my hends on a plastic test tube with a water proof lid on, nor finding out exactly what kind of mineral oil I need.

  • i wanna have one of these things just to play with. It looks awesome ;D

  • I would like to know this too.

Is there any other fluid in the glas beside the ferrofluid ???

I watched other movies where u can see that the glas gets dirty by the oil of the ferrofluid.

    Please answer THX !

  • yes one can assume there is, look at the refraction, i would guess something with a refractive index of 1.3 to 1.35

  • gravity vs. magnetism

  • Comment removed

  • is that ferroliquid in another liquid media or a usual air?

  • oh i've seen one of those.

they have one in a seattle sciencey thingey where you can play with it in a little box. ite really cool but it gets kinda old after a while.

  • it reminds me of the symbiote though

  • why dosent it make a mess!!?? mine makes a black mass where ever it touches

    s

  • can you turn the ferrofluid into SOLID in seconds? Just like NASA must do with their ships..

  • is it inside water?

  • you can you auto oil for the base too just auto oil and iron shaveings

  • Its not just oil and iron filings, they are nanoparticles coated in surfactants that are suspended in organic solvents or water.

  • can u use something insted of ferrofluid?

    like oil?

  • for this? no. The special thing about ferrofluid is that it's magnetic and reacts in this way

  • loved it :D

  • can u buy ferro fluid any place?

  • Probably some science website.

  • what happens if you swallow it?

  • You seek medical advice.

It's a solvent and dangerous. You might even be better swallowing petrol :D

  • you die...its worse than a solvent, you get get iron poisoning..and the carrier is kerosene...not for all ferrofluids though..that is just one example

  • Do you happen to know of any other medians in which to keep ferrofluid? I would like to know, Kerosene works just fine, but i would like to find something cheaper.

  • does your skin have a reaction if you touch it?

  • well, it'll become dirty, but that's all

  • itll turn black but then itll wear off when the old skin flakes off >.>

  • what happens if you touch it?

  • just like getting motor oil all over your hands, and it sticks really well.

  • oh, but will there be anny chemical reactions?

  • What, to the chemicals in your hand?

  • yeah

  • haha awesome.

  • that glass tube is full of alcohol so that it doesnt stick to the inside of the tube. kinda like oil on water

  • Augh! It's the Venom symbiot! 8)

  • lol

  • also is the ferrofluid from ferrtec?

  • hey i just bought some of that fluid and when i put in on glass it just stains it sorta then when uwash the glass it goes away is that like some kind of special glass?

  • the problem isn't with the liquid in the cell, that is just alcohol. The ferrofluid in there is a hydrocarbon ferrofluid that is extremely hard to make. That is why Ferrotec is the only place that makes it.

  • I know the biggest problem that ppl are having to display ferrofluids is the staining on the home-made display cells. I been looking for the MSDS on the internet for the clear liquid that FerroTec uses but couldnt find the 2nd part, only the ferrofluid MSDS. If anyone knows a working alternative or the clear liquid MSDS please share :)

  • please email me on where to get some of that liquid or tel me how to make it

  • does this show how magnetic fields really look like and act?

  • No.

  • Can you tell if the ferrofluid is suspended in water? I made some one time. It performed exactly like this stuff, very high quality...Anyways, it would stick to glass if it wasnt totally in water.

  • Looks the oil-based ferrofluid is inside a test tube full of water.

  • Uao..

  • o.o

  • That was the worst episode of Family Guy ever.

  • cool, does anyone know where I can find/buy some of this stuff? please let me know

  • VENOM!

  • what if i drop it on the land? i thought the earth was like a giant magnet, and it is. so does it mean i can put it in the land?if i can i will conquer the world!!!!HAHAHA >:)

  • I hate you so much.

  • Not dangerous at all.....just stains alot...don't touch it with your skin!

  • cool.. but turn off the sound of your tv next time u make a video!

  • wow, with this stuff in my possesion... I COULD CONQUER THE WORLD WHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • yes yes you can conquer the world but you will be black forever..HAHAHAH!!!!!!

  • i want some ferro-fluid!

  • funny! but is ferro-fluid dangerous?

  • yes my brother died that way

  • Nice video bnuzzbee but whats pull force of the magnet you used?

  • ohh and does the magnet have to be neoyduim or can t be a ceramic magnet?

  • I´d love to play with this ^^

  • it looks like the ferrofluid is suspended in something...maybe water?

  • is that how you keep it from staining the glass?

  • i could play with that 4ever!

  • this stuff is so cool

  • guau! I'm a student of chemical from spain

  • if it stains everything how does it bot stain the glass because i saw someone put it on glass befor and it stained that so is that glass differnt in some way???

    PLZ reply.

  • plexi glass is plastic not glass ;)

  • well im sorry i did not know that it was plexi glass i thought it was regular glass

  • It's suspended in pure alcohol. Hope that helps! :)

  • If it's suspended in PURE alcohol wouldn't it evaporate and leave only the iron particles?

  • The container is sealed to prevent any evaporation.

I'm not actually sure whether ferrofluids are even suceptible to that. The surfactants used to prevent particle clumping might also serve to prevent the liquid from evaporating. Temporarily at least...

Can anyone confirm that? I still have yet to play with any ;)

  • There are also ferrofluids that can be used outside any containers so thats why i don't think it's alcohol but some kind of oil

  • All ferrofluids can be used outside a container. If you do happen to want to contain it for demonstration purposes - alcohol is apparently ideal because it prevents the FF from staining the glass.

Ferrofluid is notorious for staining everything it comes into contact with...I want some!!

  • For lots more about Ferro-Fluid - search for the video"When I Met This Material"

  • where can you get this stuff

  • you can purchase this stuff. It's very cool, but yes, it stains everything. its a bit of a mess, as it's kerosene based.

  • This is really cool, i have some of the stuff, and its fun to play with in a lab setting. Its reaslly cool, but dot even think about giving it to somone that isnt extremely responsible because this permenantly stains everything it touches EVEN SKIN!!!! i have black splotches still from it months ago.

  • is it poisonous? how do the "stains" look? I mean maybe it could be used as sort of a painless tattoo alternative!

  • lol, no the stains are a really gross dingy brown, and no, as far as i know its not "poisonous" but you sure wont see me drinking the stuff :P

  • Well, that's why iron is used in tattoo ink o_o

  • heh heh it looks like venom in spiderman

  • How many Fluid Ounces is that?

  • That's really kool. I wonder if something like this could be used in a lava lamp shape and have the water encased in it and ferrofluid go up a stainless steel object when it's magnified. Have the light at the bottom to reflect and light up the inside. You would need to be careful where you put this of course since it has a magnetic field that could damage TVs with a tube but, wouldn't mess with a LCD TV.

  • that are one awesome idea :D

  • i think it would need to be a electromagnet. you would need to turn in on and off to get the fluid to move up and down. but you coud have a couple magnets to create some crazy shapes!!!!

  • i kinda made some like a lava lamp

i have ff in a beaker with some on top and a more gooey type on bottom with water between

when i bring a magnet close to the bottom the goo spikes and when i put the magnet on the bottom it sucks the top layer down

but i have to use a 1 inch diameter disk neodymium magnet to pull the top down

  • his ferro fluid is encased in water.

  • Where did you get your ferrofluid? I have some, but it coats the glass dark brown and then you can't see anything. And NO, I don't have poop mixed in, so everybody shut up. :)

  • then thats the problem. you forgot the poop.

  • great video, a lot of the ferrofluid videos try too hard on the art aspect.

  • pretty nifty.

  • This video is one of the best ferrofluid videos becuase it clearly demonstrates the Ferrofluidic properties in detail and at exiting to watch speed. Excellent vid.

  • your using a condom? xD

  • lol thats a weird looking magnet, is it on the bottom of something

  • like the stuff that makes venom.

  • how could this be a secret?

some people are selling this crap on ebay

  • the general public hasn't "head" of it because you're an 11 year old moron

  • ""If you surround the ferrofluid with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and deionized water, it will prevent the ferrofluid from wetting the surface, so the glass will stay clear.""

How would you do this? D0 you just rub the mixture onto the sides of the glass then add the ferofluid?

  • This stuff is cool. When am I going to see it in an executive toy?!?!?

  • STOP RESEARCHING THIS, DAMN SCIENTIST ! That's why I hate you scientists ! All of you ! It's all your fault ! You are responsible for the death of 6 billion people in the year 2012 !

Ferrofluid is being actively researched, but nobody in the general public has ever head of it. Why ? It's being kept away from the public. It's a militar secret. Those damn scients will, in the end, create an Advanced Prototype Terminator Infiltrator Series 1 Model 1A Type 1000, A.K.A. T-1000. Bastards.

  • yeah, "militar" secrets. what are you, 11?

  • ...you're an idiot. You can buy this stuff in any chemical supply shop, or in a number of places online.

  • your a fucking moron,if this was a military secret, the guy who made this video would be killed, and this,or any other ferrofluid videos would be destroyed

  • You are an idiot.

  • wtf?

  • Don't be such a naive, paranoid fucker. Nobody's going to make a Terminator 1000-whatever killer robot. You're a twat. And where did you get those arbitrary numbers from? '6 billion people'? '2012'? Why are you such a twat?

  • What pills are you on? I want 2. Must be amazing.

  • ohso u now this ur frm the "FUTURE" are you god damn shut up

  • I don't care what ethnicity you are or what country your are from but PLEASE don't abuse the English language so terribly. I would much rather translate from your native language than gawk at the horribly bastardized words that display on the screen before me.

  • shut up cachi ci

  • you dumbass!!

  • did you read that in Weekly World News?

  • then how are we watching a video of it and why are there insructions on how to make it and why was i able to make and buy some without getting arrested? moron

  • If you surround the ferrofluid with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and deionized water, it will prevent the ferrofluid from wetting the surface, so the glass will stay clear.

  • hello, whats is the liquid? water?

  • You can't get enough of that ferrofluid...Is that tube filled with another liquid?

  • hello, whats is the liquid? water?

  • the tube is probably filled with an antistaining agent

  • yeah i think it is anti stain

  • I hear some Kristen Chenoweth in the background.
