You're both wrong. It was collaboratively written by Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson. The first known recorded performance was by Brenda Lee in June of 1972. Elvis didn't do it until 5 months after that, and Willie didn't do it until 10 years later.

Elvis had a great voice, could 'sell' a song, but he didn't write them. The Highwaymen were/are all singer-songwriters as well as musicians, so it didn't matter that their voices weren't 'perfect'..they were singing from the heart.

I once saw the Highwaymen in concert in Frankfurt, Germany and it was one of the best perfomances I ever saw.

So Elvis was not a great songwriter, but my opinion he had a better voice than all Highwaymen combined.

He sang songs from is heart to and put soul into it. There is no one of them 4 Highwaymen who did not accept that Elvis was the King in music.
