@beepandbop Brooks kept referring to to Lucille's “cocoon” - African Americans were sometimes called “coons” (probably from raccoon) in parts of the Southern US prior to the 1970's.
I grew up watching these comedies, those on this skit were the top bananas of comedy. Rowan,Martin,Nipsey,Dino,Don R.Sofie,Lucie,etc.etc. They will never fade away with time, the internet will keep them alive. Thanks for posting this treasure.
Dear current and future comedians, please note the difference between innuendo and mentioning Lisa Lampanelli's cunt every other second. One is funny, the other isn't.
All those great men and women. They had class. We were made so poor by their loss. Give me a time machine so I can leave this horrible 'modern' day we live in. By the way, I'm in my 20s.
Yes, we were lucky and I loved everyone of them even as a teenager. To see these now brings wonderful memories flooding back. "Where did it all go wrong you ask?" Way too many reasons to list here. Let's be grateful that technology has helped us remember these "stars at the top of their game".
Seven people who disliked this video have no appreciation for anything Dean Martin, Foster Brooks or Lucille Ball did.
What a terrific cast. This almost feels like they were family, that they were a part of your life. It was true in many aspects. Yet as I am watching this video I can't help but think,'Where did it all go wrong'?
We're never going to go back to this. Nobody in this world is going to replace Dean, Foster or Lucy. Those who saw them in their prime should be lucky.
These were the best comedy shows around back then. But try to use this funny stuff today, andn there'd probably be people in court with lawsuits galore crying racist....The comedians today aren't that funny and to use foul language doesn't turn me on....This was a one of kind show....
What's truly funny about this is that most of the people on that dais probably knew about Lucille Ball's, uhhh, adventures during her early years in showbiz, making Brooks' jabs all the more loaded. Trust me, you may think he says "Lucille Bald", but the real joke is "Lucille Balled", and you can see it in the reactions of some of the other celebs. Priceless stuff!
Every generation thinks THEIRS got things right. But humour, like music and technology... AND PEOPLE ...evolves, reflect its generation. The older you get the less you connect with what young people feel. Just as they'll age and 'disconnect' with their young! That's the horror...and magic.... of life!
After he discussed the "cacoon", he said:" no offense to the colored man here on the stage". Could you imagine what would happen to anyone who would have dared say that today? Their career would be over, complete with visits from Jesse and Al.
@papawx3 I know, and the black people's "champion" organization, the NAACP, refers to African-Americans as 'colored'. That group is a joke that has outlived it's use.
@EsotericOccultist Actually, I have heard jokes that are worse than that on the Comedy Central roasts and from Chris Rock and other comedians. It comes down to how you view the joke. Sometimes, making light of something is one way to criticize it. I don't think the ca-colored man joke supported racism.
@papawx3 YOU KNOW IT! The ACLU and their race-baiting cronies would be all over it. People had a sense of humour 40 years ago...the adolescents are now in charge.
@TheBlueyedblond Actually, I have heard jokes that are much worse than that on the Comedy Central roasts and the ACLU and others have not contacted any of the comedians. However, you may be correct concerning network TV.
@papawx3 ...."no offense to the colored man on the dais....." fancy speak for stage....And you're right. Things were loose back then...and no offense was taken by those in the industry like this. Now every body wants money if you mutter out of the side of your mouth. Of course....drunken humor in and of itself wouldnt go very far either.....sad really...this stuff is comedy gold....
@papawx3 its actually worse than what you might think , because he is apologizing to nipsy russel for saying "cu, cu...coon" . i gather you dont see any modern roasts, but its all still open game. everyone gets on everyone for race, sexual orientation, drug abuse...you name it. roasts have always been a great format for no holds barred comedy and underlying social commentary, and they still are. i love the old school crew too, but the new guys are right on track, following a tradition.
@mackilt I agree with you about the old school.. but when I saw the relatively recent roast of William Shatner, I didn't think most of it was funny at all. I have no problem with language, I just didn't find it funny.
@papawx3 -You're absolutely right. The difference is that they were all friends- race baiting and political correctness was not yet a money making enterprise. It was all in fun- and these were the folks who through their talent, brought all kinds of people together. I'll take Foster Brooks, Dean Martin, Nipsey Russell, and Lucille Ball over any of the vulgar, hate filled, but oh so "politically correct" comics around today. ANYTIME.
@papawx3 I know what your saying. But have you seen the roasts on comedy central? Its open season on racism just short of the word nigger, aside from that every color and race is made fun of. Everybody laughs.
Roasts back then were interesting, people played drunk, coy, angry flirty, crazy, ......................the recent roasts in comedy central are just vulgar and many are not funny.
Mr.Brooks was one of a kind and no one comes anywhere near his talent.I watched him during my childhood and was amazed and now I am totally rapt and watch all his bits on a daily basis and it always cheers me up.may he rest in peace.
@toeytay She along with Roseanne Barr, Phyllis Diller and Moms Mabley, belong on the female branch of the Mount Rushmore of Comedy. As for the males, Winters, Pryor, Rickles and Carlin. Do you agree?
Man, now THIS is true comedy. No foul-mouth garbage humor like the so-called comics of today. Comedy Central should just stop it with their versions of the Roast. They suck majorly.
I was very young when these were on tv but, there will never again be people with class and fun as all of these people were. People back in the day enjoyed life going to dine, drink, laugh, and dance. People these days don't go out for a drink and listen to a live band. There too worried about jogging. We are all going to DIE anyways why not enjoy life???
I guess with comedians there were two types. A comic said things in a funny way. A comedian said funny things. Foster was awesome because he was a master at both skills, and what a sense of timing and delivery. Thanks for all the great posts.
"how 'bout u Luc (turns around to Dean Martin) thats what the football team used to call her!" oh ha ha ha ha i love the roast why r all the shows that on now crap?!?! and the comedy shows are kinda funny but none of them equal up to what they were then. Lucy was part of making TV good then! we love you lucy!
Few people know it but a comic/musician named Parkyakarkus (stage name) died on the set during this roast...told his jokes and sat down and died...fell onto Milton Berles lap....I wonder how they handled that.
Wonderful! What ever happened? We as Americans have so lost the ability to make fun or ourselves. Everyone is offended by something today. Too bad, as this was fantastic, clean comedy. And will be forever missed.
I loved these roasts because there was no such thing as "political correctness"....nowadays, you see these roasts where they're trying to be as bawdy as the people who were on the Dean Martin Roast....and it dont work.
@scoob461 ...tears running down may face. Every last person on that stage is better than any of the bullshitters that call themselves comedians, today...
if anyone really thought he was drunk then you didn't really know nothing about foster brookes acting drunk was his act and he was damn good at it to i laugh every time i watch this man we need more like him
yep, that's Vivian Vance........about the PC stuff - I guess I'm so use to not being allowed (so to speak) to laugh without feeling guilty or shameful, when hearing some of these jokes... it's part of the PC crowd indoctrination and dogma I've been knocked over the head with for years now.
@bigbluemsp That's not exactly true. He did drink when he was younger but he gave it up later in life, I think when he was about 50. You can do an Internet search and get the exact age he gave up drinking in his biography on wikipedia or elsewhere.
Foster Brooks and other comedians from his era were deserving of performing on television. Their hard work that was crafted over time resulted in writing and delivering quality, creative, funny bits. Their professional performance resulted in quality entertainment for the viewer. Today there is no standard for how to treat the viewer and we are subjected to performers who are ALWAYS young, with scripted, dull, filth to deliver like showroom dummies. BRING QUALITY BACK!
The PC (Politically (IN)Correct) crowd are now in control! People would be way to afraid to even laugh out loud at these jokes today! Really sad. As long as the PCs are in charge, there won't be much 'quality'!
@MEthistime Oh please, this is a trite complaint and it has no basis in fact either. It's so easy to complain about things as they are now and to glorify the past. Performers are not always young now, and thirty years ago they weren't always talented. Or did you miss the part when Foster used a play on words to call Lucy loose, high art indeed.
The best thing out of this video and the other Dean Martin Roasts is they don't come as offensive. No flashy promotions, no hi-tech gadgets or any of the sort. These old-timers knew how to make you laugh and feel warm hearted. They were like your buddies, the friends you would invite to your home to have a chat and enjoy some warm coffee.
Today on the other hand, the roasts come across as being politically correct, overly sensitive, and hostile. It's this generation, they can't grasp the old.
When I am down I watch one of these old time videos. The stand-up stuff, mostly potty mouthed shows of today make me sick. No one knows how to make people laugh anymore and feel good afterwards. I found a way to really laugh.
There are no more intelligent comics today. It is all 5th grade potty humor that we get today! America has been dumbed down!!!!1I work with some guys in thier 30's + and act like 16 year old boys. Always giggling about the last south park shows, and the other foul mouthed cartoons. If you ask them a serious question about real life they don't have a clue!!!!!1
Thanks for the comment. I agree with you 100%. I'm so tired of the potty mouthed stand up comics. I wonder if anyone ever told them that they are not funny and can't get them to make me laugh.
@atoxx1 Amen to that!!! I'm 35 and some of my friends like that garbage!!! I"m finding it difficult relating to them anymore!!! And you're right about the kids I mean guys in the work force. They're immature morons who are stuck in Peter Pan mode; they
Those 10 won't find their humor with a map. That generation of comics used timing you rarely see today. Benny would get a laugh with just a pause.

1clarinet1981 1 year ago
yep, that's Vivian Vance........about the PC stuff - I guess I'm so use to not being allowed (so to speak) to laugh without feeling guilty or shameful, when hearing some of these jokes... it's part of the PC crowd indoctrination and dogma I've been knocked over the head with for years now.

he wasn't drunk- it was all an act
roustabout410 2 years ago 7
@roustabout410 You're right. He actually never drank a day in his life.
bigbluemsp 10 months ago

@MEthistime, these days are long gone!

@MEthistime This is one of the best comments I have ever seen on You Tube- Bravo!!! I wholeheartedly agree!!!

OH MY!!! Did Foster actually crack up? Right around 3:12. I've never seen him laugh before! He's such a talent!!!

I saw that little smack on his face, too.

There are still clean comics out there. Take a look at Gabriel Iglesias, minimal profane, maximum funny.

KratostheThird 2 years ago 20
these comics had a physical presence and raw talent and where tottally entertaining.
compared to todays they rely on tecnology and exposure and both them and the writers haven.t a clue what life is about

Gotta remember, Foster Brooks was a Teatotaller. He did not drink, but was one of the funniest "drunks" in history
Mstrmayhem 2 years ago
I love Foster Brooks! He was great in these Roasts and during Laughin! There was nothing vengeful about him or any of them.
It's truly funny!

When I am down I watch one of these old time videos. The stand-up stuff, mostly potty mouthed shows of today make me sick. No one knows how to make people laugh anymore and feel good afterwards. I found a way to really laugh.
krmmr 2 years ago 5
I feel the exact same way.
TheRob8500 2 years ago
There are no more intelligent comics today. It is all 5th grade potty humor that we get today! America has been dumbed down!!!!1I work with some guys in thier 30's + and act like 16 year old boys. Always giggling about the last south park shows, and the other foul mouthed cartoons. If you ask them a serious question about real life they don't have a clue!!!!!1
atoxx1 2 years ago 23
Thanks for the comment. I agree with you 100%. I'm so tired of the potty mouthed stand up comics. I wonder if anyone ever told them that they are not funny and can't get them to make me laugh.
krmmr 2 years ago
@atoxx1 Amen to that!!! I'm 35 and some of my friends like that garbage!!! I"m finding it difficult relating to them anymore!!! And you're right about the kids I mean guys in the work force. They're immature morons who are stuck in Peter Pan mode; they
