Barnes was awesome.
In that game against Argentina in 86 - we could have come back in that and nearly did, but Barney was brought on too late. He had an instant impact, setting up one goal and nearly a second, but should have been on from the start.

Countries with a colonial past in Africa and the carribean have had them for a long time, Portugal had black players 50 years before Spain. @MrGooseberries Rivelino played in 1970-78, and neither Socrates or Zico played in this match. It was very much a transitional Brazil team. But it's still the greatest goal scored in an England shirt.
@seacow1970 - Barnes was v.poor in an England shirt (I say this as a LFC fan who idolised him). He'd done nothing in the WC - or the previous 2 years for that matter - to justify starting vs Argentina in 86. Bobby Robson had found a formation that worked with Barnes/Waddle as impact subs.

I remember this goal very well and the reports after the game said on the flight to Montevideo for the next match against Uruguay, some racist England fans IN the same chartered plane as the England team ( i dont know how they allowed that) really hurled vicious racial abuse at both John Barnes and Mark Chamberlain, claiming that England beat Brazil only 1-0 ( and not by the actual score 2-0) because a goal by a nigger doesnt count. Fucking unbelievable!

i hated barnes because im a man u fan and in his day he used to torture us.When he played for england he was are truly world class player but he never showed it and i think there are reasons for he lack of aptitude and passion.I dont think barnes truly thought of himself as english and infact really resented the english.
