They walked around because you do not approach a helicopter from the rear because of the tail rotor. Second if he bleeds to death in the extra minute it took to walk around, there was no saving him to begin with. Third the patient loading doors are on the other side of the helicopter. They followed protocol perfectly by approaching the way that they did.
