im probably wrong but isn't the vtp version not the version the switch is capable of using but not currently using i learned the default is 1

VTP version 2 and VTP V2 mode = ENABLED will actually enable VTP Version 2. Until then it's Version 1 used by default. So yes You are correct, good catch!
