  • I didn't know Howie Mandel rolled jiu jitsu

  • Hi Roy, I have just started Ju Jitsu in New Zealand after over 15years in a striking style and your videos are extremely helpful and well done, thank you, all the best

  • Dean is the man!!!

  • Great vid! Period.

  • Great post mate. I have been struggling with a few pro guys recently in side control, so I'll see how this goes! Great teach. Train Hard, Fight Easy, and never play leapfrog with a Unicorn!

  • Hi Roy,

The clarity of your teaching is priceless! Osu! My singular problem as a woman is when I have a very heavy partner on top side control and as much as I try I can't create enough space to snake out and get my kne back in I get frustrated, so unfortunately I try to avoid getting on my back like the plague...not a good strategy Help....

  • Thanks for the video. I used this against a top level player who constantly gives me trouble. Now im getting back at him. Great video

  • Professor Dean, I was watching the DVD where you competed at West Side submissions. The way you handled yourself was very influential. I saw you utilizing many of the techniques that you teach. Let alone, the flying triangle that you pulled off. You are an inspiration to BJJ practitioners everywhere. Thank you.

  • Listen, Roy Deans DVD's are the truth. I have been progressively getting better, and his simple practical application methods are genius. Keep up the good work professor Dean!

  • This guy is fucking pro.

  • 3:00 skill is amazing, is it possible to fail? like floor not smooth enough

  • @alan513 Only if your Gi is not blue enough :P

  • Hi Roy, I've tried to use the side control escape method of going to the knees when rolling and sparring. A lot of the time when I use this side control escape method I find myself getting stuck in a guillotine or peruvian necktie position, because my opponent will turn into me as a counter. Could you please tell me how to avoid this when using this escape method?

  • @MrChanceCottle Once you go to your knees, you can't pause or wait. You have to take them down or take their back immediately. You have the underhook. Use it!

  • @uchideshi I'll be sure to try that next time. Thank you for taking the time to reply back with your valuable information. I really appreciate it. Take care Roy.

  • @uchideshi

or maybe he could shift his head and face the opponents outer hip

  • I just wanted to mention that it is so obvious that the master (sensei) has the knowledge of both arts, as he actually do ;)

  • it is absolutely impossible not to notice the influence of aikido in those techniques :)

  • @Gliachi Since Aikido was developed much later than Jiu Jitsu, basically you're just completely wrong. :-)

  • Thank you! What I needed the most!

  • There's some sort of effective simplicity in all your videos that I just gravitate to as a student. Top notch teacher.

  • thank you, i need this. my escapes from side control need some work.

  • Parabéns,muito bem aplicados os exercícios.Realmente o jiu jitsu brasileiro.Um abraço.

  • i see triangles written all over these.

  • I have a question about the final technique. While effective, it seems to prolong time spent in a half-prone then turtle position without actually making use of those positions strategically. If the catcher is quick, can't he just spin over your turtle and put you in jeopardy of the rear-mount?

  • Some of the moves here are not in the no gi essentials and vise versa. Still his teaching is great

  • Super Solid Technique, I hope to see you this summer when I am in Oregon.

    Go with the Flow

  • Damn!!! I think that is Howie.

  • that is a great Video Mr. Roy Dean!

    Excellent!

  • Amazing video!!!!

  • didnt know the Jigsaw did bjj

  • @DANLIDDYDAN Sometimes he struggles catching his victims. Bjj makes it easier.

  • Comment removed

  • @AlienwareMetal agreed

  • From 1:29 you cold go for an armbar.

  • @AlienwareMetal I doubt his arm would still be there if you were really rolling. If it's their grab it, but don't count on it to be available very often

  • very nice video just added it to my favourites. we practised the spinout in my class yesterday evening, and it was exactly the same move but we also finished the escape with a choke called head to head choke. cheers!

  • good jiu jitsu lessons basic techniques, because street is the place where you wont fight for a trophy , you have to save your life, and many street and school fights turn grappling and ground fights, but mma also teaches u to avoid it

  • Great vid! Thanx.

  • the spinout was awesome

  • Howie is a blue belt??? that's bad ass

  • the guy is good

  • Very good teacher.....

  • ''don't get greedy'':)))

  • ..... also i hate getting my foot caught when trying to repull guard after a botched triangle attempt. i cant beleive ive never done that little hip swivel to make space

  • ive heard of makin it look easy but this is insane.

  • This is good the detail of grabbing the arm is what I was missing. It seems so obvious now that I know it LOL. They would push my leg and I would have to resort to half guard.

  • lol "...don't get greedy..."

  • I live far from my dojo, but these videos are one of the best refreshers on the web.

  • Very Good.

  • good techniques. thanks for posting.

  • your style of jiu jitsu opened my eyes beyond the flashy jiu jitsu, i now understand that jiu jitsu is an art.

  • used these in my BJJ class- same technique my master taught us- good good

  • Thank you so much. Please continue with the videos

  • he just came to my gym. amazing teacher thanks roy!

  • your amazingly fluid like in your escapes, do you have a website?

  • Thank you so much. great video

  • Hey man, very helpful video. I used the spin out in one of my spars the other day and it helped me a lot. My spinout had a different outcome when i did it though, i was fast enough to spin out and get my arm on top of him to get him in a sprawl instead of landing in his guard.

  • Does anyone know of good side mount escapes if your opponent is controlling your head and holding your pants at the hip.

  • watch the head lock escapes?

  • thaks 4 the vid

  • i love these videos. they r extremly technical. it reminds me how much more it is to be technical than strong or fast. excellent job guys

  • You're better than submissions101

  • what a great teacher !

  • Thanks, I hate defending from side control, I like the armbar and triangle opportunities that come up as you escape

  • hahah just like me xD

  • Roy Dean's DVDs are the best!! These are parts of his different DVDs. As you can see for yourself they are great and must haves in my opinion.

  • awesome!

  • good stuff. i've been having a lot of trouble with this. thank you.

  • Thanks for the info. Really good stuff.

  • ur great!! really enjoy learning from u oss!

  • great video

  • thanks dude!

  • You're a great teacher! I had to leave an MMA gym because they did not teach these basics!

  • @anonymousbecause Lots of places now a days don't know the basics. Its those competition base BJJ and MMA places whom never took the time to learn the basics.

  • @anonymousbecause

MMA is different to BJJ, especially BJJ with gi.

  • @anonymousbecause Thats another reason why you should learn jiu jitsu before going to mma :)

  • your a great teacher!!

  • Wonderful. Thank you!

  • thanks so much. i have the most trouble being on bottom side mount. so i like some of these im gonna use them thanks again!

  • Thanks for another great tutorial! You're an excellent teacher :)

  • i like it the applications are good for mma as well .

  • Good stuff!

  • bjj escapes are the best.

  • i know right? he just ninjas around this guys body

  • 1:45....dont get greedy, LOL!!! I know theres meaning behind it but that just sounded funny, lol. :)

  • DETAILED, SIMPLE AND CLEAR....this dude is a very good teacher. MORE PLEASE!!!!!! :) p.s. thank u for the vid.

  • eeeeexxcellent!!

  • very good stuff, good teaching as well. this helps us finding out who we are , doesn't it?

  • you 're anbelievable... I just arranged to go and try it

  • Good shit very nice!! it worked for me.

  • Man this stuff is gold! So well thought out and really well explained. Thanks heaps.

  • Im the lightest guy im my JJ class and for some reason we count it as a win if you hold someone in side guard for 15 seconds.

This vid will help loads. Thanks you so very much.

  • I spend a lot of time on the web looking at videos and a lot of time in privates at my school. But, I always seem to come back to Roy's videos. He is so detailed and explains the why's and how and the mechanics behind the moves. As you progress to a purple belt these things become very important.

  • I could do all thoses escapes too if I was rolling with Howie Mandel

  • LOL

  • @Gold4Guida holy crap, he looks just like him! lol!

  • @Gold4Guida bwhahaha , is that a deal or no deal?

  • These are the best youtube jiu jitsu instructional videos! I am fortunate enough to attend a Jiu-Jitsu Academy that focuses on the fundamentals. Roy Dean represents this well in these intructional videos.

I know blue, purple, brown, and black belts that have a difficult time being in side control. I use the escape to my knees, it works best for me. These are the only vids I would reccommend using for training purposes

  • dont forget about who taught roy dean

  • im not saying this video is bad , its actually really good , i just think at the end u should have showed these moves with the other guy actually resisting , but other than that perfect.

    Great job!!

  • In the first example, what happens to me is that if there head is higher up toward my armpit and they have a tight underhook, I can't get my arm under their jaw to create separation. Any advice?

  • Try to bump and bridge and then slide your forearm under his chin.

  • then you dont use that escape, obviously.

  • Great techniques,great explaining,great footage.... THX MAN!!!!!Keep showing us!!!!!Gr,

  • I just started BJJ, and i always wondered how to get out of side mount, i would always turn my back, but then get myself in trouble with the rear naked choke, so this is very handy!

  • 4:26 would be a risky escape in a live drill

  • why?

  • guillotine:p

  • Yeah I am really put off it now after being guillotined many times argh

  • could leave your foot under the hip and work the pyramid/damn good guard.

  • I just started Jiu-Jitsu, and this and the mount escape vids are awesome. Thank you.

  • Ya, getting out of side mount is probably one of the hardest thing to do in BJJ. At least for me it is, im pretty good at escaping the full mount, back mount, n half guard, but i suck at the side mount.

  • I always thought the same thing.

It's gotten a bit easier for me (with practice of course) knowing that all i need to do is get my closest knee in. Once I get that, i'm comfortable shrimping to try to get full guard.

This works well for me as a 2 month white belt, it's yet to show any difficulty for me.

  • Ya stick to what works for you, n practice makes perfect. Jujitsu takes a lot more practice compared to other stand up arts like Muay Thai, but when u get it down its a great feeling.

  • wish I could train with dean, he moves great!!!!

  • This stuff is gold. So well explained. Thanks heaps!!

  • I glad that I fell up on these videos! The instructor is very smooth and clear on the techniques.

They are going to help a lot, when I go for my blue belt!

    Thanks for the videos!

  • Thank you very much. My friend was teaching me how to escape the sidemount but left out placing the elbow beneath the chin to elevate pressure.

  • this is gold ^^

  • good stuff

  • Comment removed

  • what if the guy on top has a 'true' sidemount position. where his knee is in your armpit and he's not hugging your head but has is elbow in your ear and your face in his ribs. it's a lot harder to move at all in that position.

it is great instruction for that circumstance though. very very good techniques.

  • nice

  • Nice! Thanks for the detailed explanations and showing different angles.

  • GOOD teacher!

  • Smooth moves my man keep up the good work.

  • You have awesome videos. Thank you very much for your instruction.

  • Great tutorial

  • Awesome! Thank you.

  • EXCELLENT

  • Kickass advice, much thanks!

I d/l'ed the mount escapes vid, and see it religiously before class, lol.

  • Hi Roy!

I'm very interested in purchasing your upcoming DVD. Kindly advise when will it go on sale. My bestfriend is going to the states in MN next month. Hope it will be available there.

    Thanks!

    Franco from Manila

  • very nice escapes. good to know more then two :) 5/5

  • Thank you for this. The other day I was just thinking that I know some good full mount and half guard escapes, but I don't really know the best technique to get out of a side mount. I am assuming that these escapes are just as effective on guys who are 180+ pounds, which are most of the guys in my jiu jitsu class.
