  • This is a very nice song my God mother and her husband toll me about this song and I love it

  • Love Love Love this song. To me at least, the best song Johnny Rivers ever sung. It's simply beautiful.

  • EternalJustice2,

Because your comment had nothing to do with this song, I deleted it.

  • Real music! Real meaning! Nothing like this on the radio today. SAD! Young ppl have no idea what they have missed out on!

  • Did Johnny Rivers write this one? I know he mostly did covers, I grew up listening to him, he's great.

  • Yes, this song was written by Johnny Rivers and Lou Adler.

    Otaku3 (^_^)b

  • Can someone tell me who where the back up singers on this song.Their voices are so beautiful

  • Background vocals are the Blossoms by Darlene Love, Fanita James and Jean King.

  • Cool song. This song never goes out of style. El Profe!

  • a super favorite at karaoke. really a wonderful song. plus - he plays a great little trick with prepositions that phil ochs also used in the lyrcs of 'pleasures if the harbor'

  • This song takes me back to the time when our band did this song...our bass player took the led vocal and lead guitar as well...JR would have liked our cover....^/^

  • What a great time for music...Had my am radio, antenna hooked to window screen, ear piece in, catching WLS down in Carolina...

  • Sorry son...never heard of Rory Gallagher or Gary Moore but Johnny Rivers I surely have.

  • My soul is moved by this song-- so many years gone by, and this great hit still brings all the wonders young love alive, if only in my heart! Thanks for putting this beautiful song on!! very cool!

  • @Appleholic How old are yu those songs are all covers rivers only wrote one hit do yur research if yu don't have a clue wat yur talkin bout

  • @dictator54 Covers or not he had a hit with them...what difference does it make if they are covers?

  • Johnny Rivers is a one hit wunder there's a lot of others more deservin than Rivers like Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore etc etc

  • @dictator54 Johnny River's is NOT a one hit wonder. I don't know where the hell you are getting that from. This song is my favorite of his but he also had "Secret Agent Man" "Rockin Pnemonia" "Baby I need your lovin" "Tracks of my tears" "Summer Rain" "Swayin to the Music" "Rock N Roll Lulabye" "7th Son" and a whole shit load of other hits. Johnny Rivers is a legend.

  • @dictator54 Between 1964 and 1968, the "One-hit Wonder" had a hit about every three months.

  • @dictator54 you so fulla shit ur eyes r about to turn brown.lol and everybody on you tube is sick of people talking about covers . i dont think elvis or sinatra actually every wrote one of their songs . so stfu

  • Is it just me or does the essence of this song pull on the heartstrings? If it does then you know what I mean

  • Another perfect example of why this man should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!! It just boogles my mind that he"s NOT!!! Anyone else?

  • @TheMustangsally75 Dude seriously...HE"S NOT? Johnny fuckin Rivers is NOT in the Rock n Roll hall of fame yet? You have to be shittin me. This guy belongs PROMINENTLY in the Rock n Roll hall of fame for sure. Let's get him in there NOW

  • It's so funny, but I grew up listening to this song thinking.

How can someone sing so beautiful.

should be a gift from God.

but today people do not value the right.

    only violence.

God bless the love and peace.

    Greetings from São Paulo- Brasil.

  • Very cool thanks for the post

  • I'm 22, but this song is apart of my childhood for the radio in my dad and mom's car was always on the "Oldies" station, so musically I grew up on the 60s. Listening to this takes me back to my childhood.

  • @austenbosten That's awesome. I have 2 kids that are in their 20's also, and when they tell me that some songs (like this) bring back memories of their childhood, it makes me smile. I raised them on real good music and even though they have their own kind of music they listen to, they still love these oldies they grew up hearing on MY stereo.

  • @MoosicandCritters I see you're a fellow Buckeye! Any chance you happen to be in Central Ohio?

  • @austenbosten Actually, I'm in southwest Ohio, just 50 miles to the east of Cincinnati. Always nice to meet a fellow Buckeye! :D

  • @MoosicandCritters Ah loved Cinny when I visited there, rode the BB Riverboats and love visiting Wright-Patterson AF base in Dayton

  • @austenbosten Oh I just love Wright-Patterson AFB! I could go every year and never get tired of it. Have you ever gone to Kings Island?

  • @MoosicandCritters Yes I went there twice and rode "the Beast" I tell you I loved the German, Black Forest restaurant when I was in Cinny....I hated to hear that it closed down...I was so sad. They had great food and a great atmosphere during Oktoberfest.

  • @austenbosten Oh yes! The Beast! I was one of the first people to ride it the first year it was built, in 1979! I was a senior in High School and we got to go in May as a part of a special promotion called "Grad Night". So much fun! It is still my favorite roller coaster, because I love wooden coasters the best. I waited in line 3 and 1/2 hours to ride it that night and it was soooo worth it! :D

  • Thanks for posting a song that brings back my youth to today.

  • You're welcome, SuperBrotherBob-san!!

  • A great song of Americana. But you truly cannot make it from the poor side of town anymore.

America has became a society of classes. Not people. It is stll the greatest country on earth. But that will end. Greed is dangerous thing. Our forefathers knew that. In Jefferson's memoirs he stated that this society can be of the people, but the people must want to be part of the society.

  • Thanks for posting this great music and sharing with us!

  • You're welcome, mammie64-san!!

  • A gem indeed. I heard it the other night on Bayern 1 (from Munich, Germany). The track would seem to be rare - it's not on Spotify, anyway. A lovely song.............

  • I can not thank you enough for this healing, beautiful real music. Makes me glad

    to be alive.

  • Sweeter 'n sugar this one! Love the girl backup singers! I dont normally like this kind of easy listening music. But this just starts playing in my head once in a while, over the years, and i gotta hear it. You got the volume just right and the sound is crystal clear. Almost makes an old owl cry! Thank you!

  • You're welcome, MrNightOwL100-san!!

  • Once I dreamed this song was playing on the radio. My alarm clock went off and I turned on the radio, and guess which song came on 15 seconds later!?

  • Love this song! My Dad had a lot of Johnny's albums, and this song was always one of my favorites. He used to carry me around, and we would "dance" to the music on the record player.

  • @TracyBeth87 ..GREAT STORY!!! i WOULD DANce to this osng with my daughter when she was 2 or 3!!!

  • still have Johnny Rivers live at the Whisky a go-go on vinyl. It was my Mom's.I'm 51 now still has her name(SHIRLEY) on it.it's gotta be from 64-66.Hope I can pass is on to one of my Sons someday.J

  • that white boy had soul

  • otaku3,no,i just was replying to someone stating his being in hall of fame and not johnny rivers, who i think should also be in hall of fame.........

  • Thanks for the reply, auggdogrules-san!!

I seem to have misunderstood a meaning of your comment...

    Otaku3 (^_^;)

  • yea and elvis costello lasted all these years, more then all the other new wave punk rock artist, elvis is a hall of famer big time.......best songwriter in the last 3 decades

  • Does Elvis Costello have some relation to this song or Johnny Rivers??

    ...Otaku3

  • There is no way: every time I hear this song, tears stream down my face, one can not but remember the most important man in my life, my grandfather, who was also a father to me, miss you ...

  • @nneehhrroo I completely understand. As I stated in my earlier post regarding this song, this was one of the songs that my Dad and I would "dance" to. He died 9 years ago, and I get tears in my eyes when I listen to this song. Blessings to you...

  • The reason the background singing is so good is that one of them was Darlene Love, who sang lead and background on many of the Spector girl group songs in the early 60's (RRHOF in 2010).

  • great toon

  • Thanks for the memories 60.Poor side of town was the first 45 i ever bought. That was many moons ago more than i wish to remember. Thanks again for the trip back in time.

  • You're welcome, rjc3208-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^o^)/

  • This song says more in three and one half minutes than most songs could evoke in an hour!

  • PVPSYCHOS, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a mockery! Of course Johnny Rivers belongs in it. So do The Moody Blues, Carly Simon and others. They leave out deserving artists and put in people like George Clinton and Funkadelic, Mahalia Jackson, Bill Monroe. The list of those who should be in and aren't and those who are in but shouldn't be goes on and on. The RR Hall of Fame has no credibility!

  • hey johnny's great, but cmon giallohorror elvis costello belongs in rnrhof big time ! he is prolific as they come........

  • Seems like music in the 1960's was so simple and genuine. It was amazing! I love so many songs from the 50's and 60's although it was made long before I was.

Today's music is fabricated, cheap, shallow, empty crap. I hate today's garbage.

This song is 45 years old and still every bit as good as it was back then. Good music will live forever.

The RnR HOF is a joke! Elvis Costello is in there and Johnny Rivers isn't? Yeah, that make sense (sarcasm)

  • @GialloHorror Do you know of Jeff Buckley's music? and his father Tim's music---I have been enjoying his artistry from the 1990's--with Jeff, he wasn't a product of the times so much--he just loved poetry and great songs whether they were classical, rock, blues, whatever--check them both out--extraordinarily beautiful voices--I don't know if either of them are in the hall of fame--it's meaningless anyway--beauty is in the ear of the beholder!

  • @GialloHorror Elvis Costello gets freakier every year.

  • @GialloHorror You have taken the words from my mouth. If a record could ever be described as beautiful, this is the one. Why oh why did this record never make it to the top of the UK charts. In retrospect it is on a par with the Righteous Brothers, and any other mid tempo pop sound of the era. Words fail me.

    Ray.

  • @GialloHorror its all politics. who cares elvis cansingtello is an ass kisser

  • Could listen to this all day long

  • great song, man they don't come out with songs like this these days...........bravo johnny !

  • The rock and roll hall of fame is a joke, they expect the artist to sell a zillion records then maybe they might induct the artist......oh lets wait tell he or she dies then we might make up our minds.

  • I think this was his best, thanks for posting.....Makes me remember "Her" even after all the years....

  • You're welcome, skeetdaddy0-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)/

  • I love this song. brings back memories, some good others not so good.

  • Couldn't agree with you more about the production and the background singing. This song and either of the Fleetwood hits (Mr. Blue, etc.) are the best background singing I have heard. I'm not usually a soft rock person at all, but when the quality is this good, how can you dislike?

  • @LOCKED121 I searched many comments to find any about the background singing to this, who they are and if they toured with Johnny as I tried to find them singing with him live and couldn't. Their harmonies are so precise and clearly separated. There are moments where their harmony unifies into a composite effect, a kind of chordal resonance that is astounding. They also give an ethereal and mystifying quality to the song that gives me goose bumps. Johnny's voice too - amazing! Thanks

  • @mwj5368 I absolutely love the background vocals in this song, too. Perfection!

  • this song, as all of Johnny's stuff was so well produced, ahead of his time. The background singers were always spot on. great song.

  • its hard to find nice things this day of age as opposed to the 60's!!!!!! Love live the 60's, the best music/tunes forever. Johnny, your the best, God Bless

  • My step-dad LOVED this song. We say Johnny Rivers in concert & he was album good. He passed away a few years ago, so this song means the world to me. Thanks for posting.

  • You're welcome, ebaydiva27-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)v

  • My fave Johnny Rivers song. If he still isn't in the RRHOF he SHOULD BE...!!

  • This was my parents' song/still is; my dad passed away three years ago and I can't stop listening to it tonight and thinking of them and how happy they were and how much they loved each other and how much my mom still loves him. Anyway, thank you so much for uploading this -- it's a wonderful song.

  • You're very welcome, thatchaoticart-san!!

    Otaku3 d(^_^)b

  • @thatchaoticart You were very lucky to have parents that loved one another. I didn't have that but I will be leaving that to my children bc their dad and I love each other. It's a blessing.

  • @Tonithenightowl I'm sorry you didn't have that, but I promise it is one of the most rewarding things a child can have, and you and your partner are truly wonderful people to give that to them. :)

  • @thatchaoticart Thank you. It was important to me to raise my children in a loving home. After 37 yrs of marriage, with 2 wonderful adult children and a grandson I feel very blessed. Love is a good way to live. :)

  • isen't this his first 45 ? if not its still a great song. i love it.

  • summertime blues, he was the greatest in my teen yrs

  • 31 years old and most people say i have an old soul, they call me old man and grandpa, guess its because of things like this.....i relate my family life to these types of times and music, i guess thats why my family has so much love and happiness surrounding them....i think they really are proud to have old soul as daddy.

  • Why isn't Johnny Rivers in the R & R HOF ??? two words: Jann Wenner

  • Each Thursday is my day off and I head down to the local packy and pick up 2 40 oz. Budweisers (A "Missile"" is what we nickname a 40 oz. beer and 2 large jugs of Arbor Mist wine " and listen, first, to the legendary Johnny Rivers and at the end of each song I take "A Big Sip" just like you...Dan O'Niallain

  • One day I was 16 years old too...

  • Oh man, what a song...

  • memories 1st time i kissed a boy I was 14

  • this is as good as it gets.......thanks for putting it on.......

  • You're welcome, Howiekap-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)b

  • @Howiekap

With all the nihilistic noise of hip hop and rap and their absence of great melodies and storytelling it's great to hear music from a time when it music was easy on the ears and a balm for the soul.

  • @YD8189 thank heavens I grew up around ROCK AND ROLL

  • @hotmn4u

This is one of those masterpieces the whole of which is greater than the sum of its parts: great melody, simple

lyrics, and a heartrending story sung so touchingly but it still evokes the same feeling if done by a symphony orchestra, solo piano, or a capella.

It's as moving as anything Lord Byron or Shakespeare wrote about "ruined love"; there aren't many pop songs in that class. I think it's far superior to "Yesterday". Chad and Jerermy's "A Summer Song" is another weepie.

  • This guy is so underated that it's Pathetic !

    What a Voice !

  • always loved this song!

  • $ 181 best song of the 60s Johnny Rivers - Poor Side of Town

  • ahhh, what a wonderful remember when... man, that takes me back to some great days. thank you 60otaku3 san :)

  • Love this so much!!!!! Can we change it to gilr to man?

  • Love this so much!!!!!

  • hermosa canciòn que me hace recordar bellos momentos

  • Not in the Hall of Fame. Jerry Kramer of the 60's Packers isn't in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. How could both of these men have been so overlooked?

  • What a great song! What a distinctive voice! One of my absolute favorites.

  • I love this song. It has something so beautiful about it. Great. Great! Really romantic too.Yearning.

  • why does it matter what he is? IF he's a Jew, Ethiopian, Chinese, Mexican, Irish, who cares??? He's a great artist and that's all the matters! I love the song and all of his music! Some people are so small minded and ignorant.

  • Billboard's 212th #1 hit of the rock era. He showed his NYC accent, by droppin' his r's when he sang. God bless ya, brother Johnny!

  • what great songs. they bring back so many memories of my youth. thanks for posting them.

  • You're welcome, jemoore1969-san!!

    Otaku3 (*^_^)/

  • OH OK he co-wrote this with Lou Alder. Lou was a great producer and involved in talent as Carole King and Sam Cooke. He co-wrote Sam's "wonderful world" and produce movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He was also married to Shelley Fabre and Britt Ekland and what a great life with some great babes.

  • I have never heard a better rendition of this song. The background singers don't overdo it as they usually do and Johnny sings his heart out.

  • This is a great song. In answer to the questions posed ... why isn't Johnny in the Hall of Fame? Well he didn't write any of his songs (I think) like a Neil Young or me.. he was a fine producer but if you put John in you the Hall you have to put in a lot of good bands and the stage in Cleveland would be way way over-crowded. So over-crowding is the answer.

  • o_O Didn't know this song was from the 60s.... haha.

  • These Memories keep feeling my head, Every Time I listen to one of these song's from my youth I realize how Time go's by SO swiftly. But as long as I maintain my Memory I still feel like a 14 yr. old. Thank You for Helping.

  • teehonky,

In your comment, you used a so very disparaging term "Jap" against all Japanese people.

Even if you apologize about that matter, it is not at all a permissible thing.

I delete all your comment and blocked your account.

  • A true classic

  • nossa como adorei ouvir esta linda canção , voltei na minha infancia onde me lembro com carinho te-la ouvido muito, pois meu pai era fã deste cantor. valeu.

  • teehonky,

Please stop the inquiry about the people of the specific country.

That inquiry is totally unrelated to this song and also because I think that your comment will make many Mexican users uncomfortable, I deleted it.

  • Me encanta este tema. Me recuerda mi infancia y solo tengo 19 años xD Gracias viejo por hacerme escuchar Johnny Rivers!!

  • Eres bienvenido, weconsume-san!!

  • I saw Johnny Rivers about 10 years ago at a fair in South Florida, we did not even know he was playing there. We walked in about ten minutes before the show and got front row seat. It appears that nobody in Miami never heard of him. JR put on a great concert for about 200 people. Being born in the USA finally paid off living in South Florida.

  • i sang this song 1 night, doing karoke, got a standing ovation, not bececause of me, but because of this song, this song is a great 1

  • Love this song!

  • Good lord, 1966 was a year just brimming over with fantastic music like this song.

    Obviously a CLASSIC.

  • this is my friends dad singing

  • Love the way he holds his endings, the consonants that carry the ringing tone of his voice at the end of a phrase. Pure Johnny. This is one of his best. Love Muddy River, Swaying to the Music,

  • sweet sound from the 70's. Peace and easy.

  • This is a song released in the middle 60's.

    Otaku3 (^_^;)

  • Who sings the back up on this? Man that just hits the spot.

  • @blueyesoul1l

The back up ensemble on this was called The Blossoms.

  • just another one of the many great classics of the '60s...these songs will be listened to by generations to come, they will never be forgotten...so often I hear today's young people tell me how they wish they would have grown up in the '60s

  • He deserves to be recognized as one the BEST artists of his era!!! So many great songs!!!

  • Red Wing Rollerway in Augusta, Ga. in the 60's. I learned to skate backwards just so I could be cool when I skated with a girl to this song.

  • 1966/67 such a giant song we listened to in 1966/1967. I had my first kiss at 15 now I'm a grown up big kid at age 58, up here in St. Paul, Minnesota. Thank you for the MEMORIES, they will never go away!!!
