At the beginning and at 1:24 and in the fade out there is a 3 note loop cow-bell-like loop which I imagine must be a sampler. Sounds great and gives it "melody" but some of the posters here do not seem to realise there is an electronic oomponent to this composition.
@sqgl Actually, he's playing the cowbells live. They're Turkish sheep bells or something like that. The electronic component comes in because he recorded two other drum parts, electronically enhanced them with filters and the like, then overlapped them. Then he plays a third drum part live. If you're interested, you should check out his interview on Sound Opinions with Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis. He gives some great background, and he's a real gentleman as well!
@NorthWriter Thanks. I heard him explain a little bit (not too technical) when he was featured on the RadioLab podcast. He certainly did seem a genuine passionate musician rather than a poser. Do you know if he ever does 100% improv? I enjoy following creative thought-processes more than compositions. Perhaps he simply does not record such sessions?
Just what I expected from one of the most masterful musicians on the scene these days. This guy knows what the epitome of music and creativity is and grasped it by the scrotum.

Very unpleasantly surprised by this performance. Absolutely adore Wilco and Glenn's drumming on their stuff but this is not very creative or technical.
wow i've never heard of this guy before today. What an amazing and original drummer! i'm confused about the shitload of tiny cymbals to his left. Why does he have so many??
You know - I really feel sorry for all the narrow minded loosers who gave negative vibes on this glen kotche. In a world where musicality and originality is often neglected in a drum solo. It's real refreshing to see someone playing something that resembles music in a solo context. This was the only solo that I rewinded to watch over and over. Kudos to Glen for making this a very original and musical experience
Now who's using a real bass drum?!

This isn't just drumming, this is true percussion :)

Glenn is an amazing drummer and I was lucky enough to be a student of his when he was in college at the University of Kentucky.

it is so hard to make your left foot do 4/4 time and your right 3/4 time, he's really good to be able to do that

the way he layers the kit and the drum smaples is so fucking amazing!
i strongly disagree with anyone who thinks that this is not creative.
it's not a drum solo.

He probably uses them to play certain notes with the band. I think they're pitched cymbals.
drumjunky7 4 years ago
they're called crotales, he plays whole melodies with them while still playing his rhythm parts on the rest of the kit when he;s playing with Wilco.

semskees 4 years ago
i dont know who i was talking to. all i'm saying is i'd rather listen to a bus full of children roll down a hill and catch fire.
grayson311 4 years ago
What? He is an awesome drummer. How could you say that?
semskees 4 years ago
i guess its just not my style. no offense. i dont think he did anything difficult (to play) or genius (to create) in this clip. it just bored me.
grayson311 4 years ago
Well, not the average drummer could play that. Sorry if I sounded mad in my last comment, I understand not liking something (example hannah montana).
semskees 4 years ago
oh....of course i like hannah
