When I saw Vayne here for the first time, I thought he was the villain without a doubt.
But then when he held this speech, I completely BOUGHT it!! I thought he was the good guy.
So about a third through the game I was confused. I was like "Wait, someone must have set him up and ambushed the resistance!" or "Vayne didnt know that Ashe just wanted peace." or "Vayne quelled the insurgents as he must! Dalmasca could ill-afford another war!'
Bloody silver-tongued politician! I was completely fooled!
Vayne is an interesting character simply because he's not the same repeating insane protagonist. He simply wants to dominate the world using power and manipulate people. He's evil nuff said. Kind of like how Vaan is interesting to me because he isn't the same repeating self righteous teen angst "protagonist". He's just a kid who got dragged into some mess and decides to stick with it since he's already there.
@axel5735 Wait, I thought Vayne wanted mankind to be able to control their own path? I specifically remembered a line from Vayne fight "Ivalice will know a new dynast king and men will keep his own history. The tyrany of the gods is ended. We are their puppets no more. The freedom for which we have long is at hand."
Seems to me that he just wants to freedom and to be a shepard of men but did so in an evil (from a perspective) way.
@Idunhavanamez Yeah, I actually agree with you 100%. I guess I just worded it horribly haha. Vayne would like to think of himself as the hero in the situation in the end he becomes so misguided he turns into the very being he wished to rid the world of.
I liked Vayne. He started off seeming like a good hearted and decent leader with good intentions, but gradually turns power hungry, just like a dictator always does. Probably not the most creative villain, but definitely one that represents the problems with most of our leaders here on earth. I love it when fantasy clashes with reality.
@Kkyyrruu Same here...I think final fantasy 12 is the best. I love the game-play! However, first time playing when I borrowed it i was like ''wdf is this shyt!'
I bought it recently and it's so amazing. I was just interpretting it wrong. The battle system is just like how it was for every final fantasy (1-8) with a turn bar that fills up. Except instead of running back and forward, the chars stay in place and it looks amazing!!!
@GoldenPawprint I always liked it since day one lol. I like that you can see the fiends and not be ambushed every 5 steps. And you can move around and flee. not be stuck in one area. I do admit I NEVER used gambits. People are like "you don't ever get to play cause it does it for you". Well they're not MAKING you use them. I went through the whole game without it. And I just loved the scenery and characters and the voice acting. FF is evilving lol. Im so excited for FF Versus 13
@Kkyyrruu Yeahh well i'm glad its not over for me yet. I feel bad for not liking it originally :O Kinda like a kid not liking veggies or something i dunno.
And yeah not using gambits sounds good :)
-But I loved the gambits system. I loved making my chars do what I like while playing as my party leader as if they were like assisting me and things i dunno. Nerdy stuff 8D But I hate how it wasn't a huge hit. It's so amazing! I really really really hope they made a big profit from the game...
I cant remember what the place is called but its where you fight your way through the illusions that lead to that big door that i dont know how to pass. says you need something but i dont know what it is, sorry.
I liked the political driven story-line in this one. Surprised there weren't any romances though, but a break from that after eight isn't such a bad thing. =D
[[ I liked eight, but, it was almost entirely driven by personal agendas. ]]
I actually like the Empire, as they are a democratic nation, and are at the cutting edge of technology and innovation. Rabanastre is just a backwards, inbred monarchy where no one wears a shirt. Besides, why is "Putting the reins of history back in the hands of man" such a bad thing?
Haha, got some goos points there man. Even Shinra was starting to grow on me in the end of FF7. Rufus was bringing them in the right direction there too!
I wouldn't exactly call them a "democratic nation", or Rabanastre "backwards", especially since we've seen that the Archadians forced the Rabanastrans down into Lowtown and more or less rule with an iron fist.
I agree that putting the reins of history back into the hands of man is a great thing, though. But I think it also goes to show that you can have good intentions, but go about it the wrong way. In the end, I was more sympathetic with the Empire's cause, but it was still a great game.
the game was cool and all, i was just disturbed by how they ran, cuz it looked a bit awkward, especially balthier and his overly tight pantaloons, pantaloons, if there is an E between the N and S, then my mistake.
Vayne is one of my fav FF characters, and my fav villain. Gotta love his genius, his martial arts skills and is a great politic and military tactician. I know many people like Sephiroth better, but Sephiroth is just an obssesed psychopath whereas Vayne posses more human qualities that makes him a better villain.
There is one thing that would make Sephiroth a better villain: being able to see his childhood. Just like Seymour, Albedo (Xenosaga) and Delita (Final Fantasy Tactics). He never talked alot about his past and if we're able to view it somehow (with another game or another anime featurette) we'll be able to understand him more and he'll probably seem less than a simple psycopath.
or a villain who sees themselves as the hero but are actually the villain like Ras Al Ghul or the tragic hero like MR. Freeze for more of a pity and impact on the audience.
If anything, the fact that Sephiroth was so psychotic and obsessed makes him seem more human than Vayne could ever be. Don't get me wrong, I love Vayne, but Sephiroth is WAAAY better. And Sephiroth wasn't just bad because he was power-hungry and a warmonger, unlike Vayne. Seph was a genuine hero until events took a sour turn and he just, unfortunately, had a psychotic break. Tragic, really. It sometimes happens to the best, and most HUMAN, of us.
Yea, ur right. But thats one of the reasons I prefer Vayne over Sephiroth; he was really more like a normal human before FFVII took place, but after he learned of his nature he just went 2 crazy and made him somewhat of a cliche villain. Its like his human side disappeared, and I like villains who display more emotion than just "I wanna be God." Also what I liked about Vayne is that he wanted power, but he also wanted to free mankind from Occuria. So he wasnt a one minded like most villains.
Vayne did have noble intentions A LITTLE BIT. But he was mostly a pretender. Seph, unlike Vayne, has an excuse for his deeds. He went mad, like any normal human could. He was a great guy until he lost his mind. Vayne was NEVER a great guy. Heck, he even murdered his own brothers. As for Seph, he displayed a lot of emotion when he found out where he came from. Sadness, loneliness, anger... all these built up and contributed to his madness. He was more of a victim than a villian, unlike Vayne.
I agree that Sephiroth was mainly a victim (and I think the "real" villain is Hojo). But, I'd like to see a bit of his childhood.
Ever heard of Albedo from Xenosaga? He seems like a simple psychopath at first sight, but once we got a glimpse of his childhood in Episode II, we came to understand him more and that makes him a better character.
@PrinceSephiroth I like them both and think they have great depth but you're being fanatical. Anyway, XII is a war drama at heart and the characters aren't meant to be as interesting as the plot.
@Conchobhar Not fanatical, truthful. Learn the difference between being a fan and being fanatical. I have, after all, been playing FF games since childhood. Anyway, I also like both of them for different reasons. Vayne struck me as the most interesting and complicated character in the game, actually. The others were a bit too 2 dimensional for my tastes. But still, he wasn't as well developed as a character as Sephiroth. Jmho.
