This production is considerably worse than the Netherlands Opera staging - which was directed by the opera's librettist, Peter Sellars. You have to ask why Sellars was excluded from the NY production? Could it be because they needed to soften-off the negative aspects of what Oppenheimer did?

I highly doubt that the exclusion of Sellars was anything close to the reason you've suggested. It is quite possible that Sellars declined to direct.
