@Doug19752533 ~ Yes, you can write to the composer himself at Dizzyfingers2@aol.com and he will mail you a copy of the entire New England Ragtime Suite for piano
Had Joplin lived another 25 or even 30 years, most likely his rags (had he continued to compose ragtime) would probably have developed into something sounding like this gorgeous rag, and probably like Graceful Ghost Rag by William Bolcom. Im sure he would be extremely pleased to know that later musicians have taken such care to compose classic ragtime close to his intentions, but continue to expand the form. its almost a timeless style. what a gorgeous rag this is!
Nice rag and performance! This reminds me of Tom Brier's performances of Eric Marchese's contemporary rags on their fantastic CD "Brier Plays Marchese" from about 1997. I hope Aaron can come to some of the numerous ragtime festivals that occur throughout the year here in the US.
Not only is he a great pianist, but he really seems to "get" ragtime, unlike many classical and popular pianists today. Of course, this ballad-style is just one of many different ways to play ragtime right.
@KawhackitaRag very true - ragtime as a whole has many sub generes to it: the new orleans style which Jelly Roll Mortan played early in his career, the midwest style of which Joplin and James Scott were masters of, the New York Classic style of Joplin's later years and Joe Lamb, the honky tonk style, and dixieland style... to many people try to group all of ragtime up into one form and think that it all should be played one way. really cant do that
