@goforbroke64 Lesley recorded this song in 1963 for her 2nd Mercury album, LESLEY GORE SINGS OF MIXED-UP HEARTS. She recorded a "jazzy" version of this song in 1965 for the movie SKI PARTY, however, the original 1963 version was used for the movie. Marvin Hamslich wrote this song. It was nominated for a grammy award in 1965, however, Lesley did not win.
@HauntedFrancisco ~ She actually waited a long time before coming out of the closet. I saw Leslie, at the end of 2004, at the Pepper Mill in Mesquite, Nevada and she was finally talking very openly about being a lesbian.
She was short and had a big head so this hair does look good on her, the flip do looks better on a slimmer face, the short poufy hair looked great on her.
Regarding double-tracking because the voice was thin, well, that's believed for years until a friend who went to Sarah Lawrence told me her voice was tremendously powerful, they just chose to record her that way. Which indeed turned out to be the case. If you've ever seen in her person she has a big, big voice.
@waynebrasler You are correct, sir. I would urge all Gore fans to get, i.e., purchase for your own collection, the DVD called "The T.A.M.I. Show". It's circa 1965. Besides having James Brown, The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Chuck Berry, and Marvin Gaye (breathe) Leslie Gore does 4 songs. That's more than anybody except James Brown and the Beach Boys! She does a powerhouse, soul-style rendition of "You Don't Own Me". Total power.
@jedwing I have no idea what you're talking about. I think she's great. The only post I see of mine is the one saying she was lipsynching. That's no big deal. Unless there's another one I don't know what the problem is.
some people have one track mines, but anyways you can interpret the song anyone u like,, personally i thinks its a veryyyy nice song, so there, from an elvis fan
Why sit here and think how hateful and evil everyone is today? when you could be out spreading joy and happiness, and when they're confused why you are so happy smile harder! ^^
sometimes it kinda makes me tear up about how weve gotin more cruel in this world then before and where words used to be happy and bright are now replaced by hate.
Very good question Jmurphy! A+++ Things were so innocent back then.. What the Hell happened to us? Jmurphy,! It would take me about 30 minutes and more than 1000 + characters to try to answer your question! Thanks for posting this great music! I was about 7 years old when this song was popular. I had my very own AM radio back then. My sister put pink fingernail polish on the AM radio's dial so I would not forget the location of the local popular AM radio station that I listen to. HA! Ha!
Wow........I've always been a rocker for the most part, and the music that really got me excited started to be recorded in the '70s, because I play guitar, and if you really like guitar epics, then you have to check out songs recorded in the '70s.This is a good song. I can't believe how the girls on stage are moving. It's like they're taking pep pills, which was the street name for amphetamines when this song was recorded, and pep pills were very popular at the time this vid was recorded.
"Those were innocent days" Ah, I hate to break the news to my fellow Baby Boomers, but statements like those aren't true! We had the Vietnam war, race riots, hippies, rampant drug usage, out-of-wedlock births, kids overdosing on drugs, rapists & child molesters on the loose, divorce rate climbing, the constant threat of the Soviet Union, etc, etc. LET'S GET REAL FOLKS!!!
.-. wonder what happen to her if she ever came to my house and ii'm full of guns :P i even have an desert eagle rare thigns to found O.o jk jk but i wish i do i shoot her :D
@jmurphy914 eh, innocent on the surface. scratch it a little and it's not so different from today, maybe even more intense, at least we know when someone is totally messed up instead of just turning a blind eye. as far as music goes, though, i wish today's had the same taste as it did back then :\
@LuvMadonna626 You've gotta be kidding me, "not so different from today."???? No comparison to the explicit garbage of today and the subtle, feel good, mildly suggestive stuff like sunshine pop.
@SKOTP69 Sorry guy, don't know if you're a baby boomer like some i believe who are sadly missing this gentle type pop culture of the early and mid sixties, but gotta tell ya, it aint NEVER coming back. Hold fast to the good memories, things will continue to get worse in the culture and society AND songs. Lesley's style aint never coming back. You'll see more cr*p like L. Gaga and her meat dress and simulated fornication.......
@jmurphy914 I remember this song very well but I was under 10 at the time and my babysitter dressed and sort of looked like the young Ms. Gore when my parents went out for an evening. I remember a bit later her starting to have a boyfriend come around who reeked of alcohol. Just about the time she was enraptured with a new song by the Doors called "Light My Fire". Personalities change over time. Grin.
@jmurphy914 I want to just go back. I want to stay there. I can't stand what we've devolved into! At the very least, I can come home from work, slip into my easy chair, my YOUTUBE, a Jack and Coke and head back for an hour, or two. Unfortunately, my wife calls me back to reality at about 7:30 just like Mom used to call us home just when we were having a good time in the neighborhood.
@jmurphy914 i'll tell you what. Just as we loved some aspects of the culture; innocence in innocuous, feel good songs like this, a culture of liberalism in politics and social mores gained control and reflects what we have today. They call it "progress." The wonderful love songs of the early Beatles 60's gave way to thier psychedelic drug crazed post guru songs and so on. Also a welfare culture sprung up. These are just some hard explanations to your lament.
I thought I heard this song on the simpons show one night .

@Telos41 oh yeah, this is obviously lipsynching. No mike in front of her and I doubt with her walking down that ramp they had a boom mike above her.
lasktguy 4 months ago
@Telos41
This is lip sync, because the recording has double tracked herself - like she did for most of her recordings I think (her voice was kind of thin).
Anyway when I was 12 I thought I wanted to marry, Lesley Gore one day. That was never going to happen - for a lot of reasons
